In preperation to watch and review “Appaloosa“, I took another look at the film’s trailer. Watching this trailer leads me to believe that if you’re looking for a direct adaptation of Robert Parker’s novel, look no further.  Every line of dialogue uttered is directly from the book and I can place every shot down to the chapter.  It’s amazing how Harris seems to have captured both the quiet, classic western aspect, the amazingly visual style, and the tongue in cheek humor of the book.  I can’t wait to see the film and compare, but for now I’d say this trailer is a great start.

Last week a few new images from “Saw 5″ were released, and now we have an R-rated clip from the film. Continue reading to watch it…

Appaloosa by Ed Harris This weekend Ed Harris’ adaptation of “Appaloosa” hits theaters in limited release.  The western is based on a 2005 Robert B. Parker novel.

The film is centered around Virgil Cole (Harris), a lawman, and his sidekick Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortensen). Cole and Hitch are hired to defend a 1880s lawless town from a murderous rancher, Randall Bragg (Irons). Their efforts are disrupted and their friendship is tested by the arrival of Allie French (Zellweger), an attractive widow.

“Appaloosa” is one of many adaptations that are being released in the fall/early winder season. We’ll be seeing the film this weekend at the ArcLight Hollywood, which will also feature a Q and A with Ed Harris, the film’s director/star. Phasekitty will be writing a book to film comparison early next week.

Four Christmases

I absolutely LOVE Holiday films and this is about the time of the year that studios unleash trailers for their November and December Christmas flicks. New Line Cinema has released the trailer for “Four Christmases”, which stars Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon as a “happily unmarried couple” who attempt to go on a private get-away for Christmas, only to be stopped in their tracks by bad weather and forced to spend the Holiday at four “relative-choked festivities”.

Tristan Wilds as Dixon on 90210 on The CW.

Tonight on The CW is an all new episode of “90210″.  “Annie, Harry, and Debbie are surprised to learn that West Beverly’s theater director can no longer oversee the school musical. Kelly persuades Brenda to take over as the play’s director, but they end up arguing over Kelly’s involvement with Ryan. Meanwhile, Dixon tries to get a part time job at the Peach Pit and Naomi confronts her father’s mistress” (TV).

Rumor has it that on tonight’s episode we’ll be learning the father of Kelly’s son. While I can not confirm or deny the rumor, if it is revealed tonight it gives me the vibe that the father is likely Brandon. Especially if Kelly and Brenda get into a heated argument about Kelly’s relationship with someone new. Of course, I could be wrong. We’ll have to watch to find out. But in the meantime, you can watch the first 4 seasons of the original series here.

José Saramago’s Nobel Prize winning novel is one amazing piece of work. The flow of the novel is so strong; it reads like free writing with very little punctuation and pauses. It’s very visual while offering a glimpse into the frantic and horrifying minds of the blind. I am thoroughly enjoying the read.

I am a bit apprehensive about the film adaptation. As I read the book, I find myself wondering how a film could adapt such a unique literary style. Translated literally onto the screen I’m afraid the story would fall flat. There needs to be something that offers the haunting aspect that Saramago’s prose gives us in the novel. From what I understand (though I have only seen the brief teaser) the filmmakers are trying to be true to the novel in all aspects, even allowing their characters to remain unnamed as in the book. I can’t help but think how difficult this must have been to adapt, but I’m very anxious to see the attempt.

Also, while reading the novel I find myself picturing a different looking couple for the doctor and the doctor’s wife who are portrayed by Mark Ruffalo and Julanne Moore in the film. For some reason, I’ve been picturing someone older for the doctor, along the lines of Tom Wilkinson and someone younger, but with a run down look for the wife, such as Robin Wright Penn. It will be strange to see the younger couple in action on the screen, but I’m especially excited to see what Mark Ruffalo will do with the role.
