Archive for November, 2011

Release Date: November 11, 2011
Studio: Relativity Media
Director: Tarsem Singh (The Cell)
Starring: Henry Cavill (The Tudors), Mickey Rourke (Iron Man 2), John Hurt (Incredible Hulk), Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), Stephen Dorff (Public Enemies)
Plot: As a power-mad king razes ancient Greece and threatens to destroy mankind, a heroic young villager rises up against him in a thrilling quest as timeless as it is powerful.

The brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) and his murderous army are rampaging across Greece, demolishing everything in their wake with ruthless efficiency. Village after village falls to Hyperion’s legions and each victory takes him one step closer to his goal: unleashing the power of the sleeping Titans to vanquish both the Gods of Olympus and all of humankind.

It seems nothing will stop the evil king’s mission to become the undisputed master of the world, until a stonemason named Theseus (Henry Cavill) vows to avenge the death of his mother in one of Hyperion’s raids. When Theseus meets the Sibylline Oracle, Phaedra (Freida Pinto), her disturbing visions of the young man’s future convince her that he is the key to stopping the destruction. With her help, Theseus assembles a small band of followers and embraces his destiny in a final desperate battle for the future of humanity.

Thoughts: At first I just dismissed Immortals as a 300 rip off, but the latest trailer got me a little more interested in the movie and the fact that it stars the future Superman Henry Cavill makes me hope that it is good. The supporting cast is top notch with John Hurt, Mickey Rourke, and Freida Pinto, but how many movies have great casts that end up completely lackluster. The script is the debut feature by the pair of Charley and Vlas Parlapanides. With an endless ocean of scripts there must have been something special about it, which made it stand out and led to a studio pumping 75 million dollars in the idea. I wasn’t a fan of Tarsem Singh’s The Cell, but a lot can change in 11 years. The footage of Immortals screams 300, but who is to say that another film can’t share that style and also be awesome? I’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt. Lets hope I don’t regret it.

What could be better than a new Burn Notice tonight? How about catching up on all of the Burn Notice that you can take before the new episode comes on? That is what we have on USA Network who started a Burn Notice marathon at 6am this morning, which will build all day until the new episode at 10pm tonight! (a good day to call in sick, eh?) I really gotta say, when it comes to a new week of television I always look forward to ABC’s comedy block on Wednesdays. And tonight it is new across the board. The Middle and Modern Family have been consistently funny the past few years, while Suburgatory I only discovered with last week’s Halloween themed episode and with a mix a likeable characters and a creative story it kept me watching while I wasn’t looking for a new show to get hooked on. Happy Endings is a weird fit for the block, but I’m going to give it a chance. It doesn’t help that I’m anticipating the return of Cougar Town, which I’m still shocked that I love it as much as I do.

The Middle starts the block at 8pm, tonight’s episode is “Heck’s Best Thing”; Axl has an interview with a college-football scout, and his parents worry it won’t go well. Elsewhere, Sue and Brick engage in a texting marathon with their aunt’s cell phone.

Next up is Suburgatory with “Charity Case” at 8:30pm; Tessa persuades the school to get behind charitable causes, which yields mixed results, but her peers begin to wonder who really needs their help. Meanwhile, George’s friendship with Noah hits a snag after he gets a huge bill for dental work.

At 9pm we have the multiple Emmy award winning Modern Family. Tonight’s episode is “Treehouse”; Gloria persuades Jay to commit to a night of salsa dancing after seeing how much his friend Shorty (Chazz Palminteri) and his girlfriend (Jennifer Tilly) do together. Meanwhile, Cameron makes a bet that he can get a woman’s phone number at the bar; and Phil builds a tree house.

Last up we have Happy Endings with “Lying Around”; Brad sneaks off on a secret staycation at a plush hotel in the city in order to dodge a visit from Jane’s sorority sister. Meanwhile, Alex’s new boyfriend takes dating to a new level; and Max and Dave shoot a commercial for a lunch truck.

Also new tonight?

NBC: Harry’s Law (law drama)
DSC: MythBusters (docu)
BBC: Law & Order: UK (crime drama)
FOOD: Man v. Food Nation (docu)

NBC: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (crime drama)
FX: American Horror Story (horror drama)

Talk about a pretty packed night of TV, especially after 10pm on Cable. I’ve listed a select few above, but there is a ton of other new shows.  My DVR is going to be working overtime.

If you have been to My Hollywood Dream in the past, you might have noticed that the site has received a complete overhaul this past week (and if you are new to MHD, welcome!). Big props and a huge thank you go out to my brother PJ who designed and coded the new look. He does this type of stuff professionally. If you like this website, and you have been thinking about starting your own blog, then I highly recommend you contacting PJ. He works very fast and has great rates for putting together WordPress blogs. He’ll do all the heavy lifting and let you get right down to work. Without PJ, My Hollywood Dream would not exist.

You can check out PJ’s Portfolio and contact him through the Flip Brothers website (which he also designed). In addition to websites, PJ also makes movie posters and pop art based on geek favorite movies and television shows.

There is a decent selection of programming tonight, along with the return of FOX’s regular Tuesday night programming since the World Series ended. On tonight’s Glee at 8pm on FOX we are introduced to a new character portrayed by Damian McGinty, the co-winner of The Glee Project reality competition. Check out the network’s official description of the all new episode: “Pot of Gold” A new foreign-exchange student (Damian McGinty) enrolls at McKinley and crashes with Brittany, who thinks he’s a leprechaun. Meanwhile, Mercedes tries to recruit members for Shelby Corcoran’s new glee club; and Sue’s congressional campaign heats up.

I’m not digging this whole rivalry with the school having two Glee clubs. We’ll have to see how it plays out, the random month hiatus between new episodes certainly did not help the flow of season three.

Also on tonight:

8PM

ABC: Last Man Standing/Man Up! (comedies)
CBS: NCIS (crime drama)
CW: 90210 (drama)
NBC: The Biggest Loser (reality competition)
HGTV: My First Place (docu)
.
.

9PM

ABC: Dancing With the Stars (reality competition)
BRAVO: Millionaire Matchmaker (reality dating)
CBS: NCIS: Los Angeles (crime drama)
CW: Ringer (noir drama)
FOX: New Girl/Raising Hope (comedies)
MTV: True Life (docu)
.

10PM

ABC: Body of Proof (crime drama)
CBS: Unforgettable (crime drama)
FOOD: Chopped (competition)
FX: Sons of Anarchy (drama)
NBC: Parenthood (drama)

USA: Covert Affairs (spy drama)

A very full night. What will you be watching? DVRing?
