Preview: Franken-Castle #19

Franken-Castle issue 19

Okay, I’ll admit it, I’ve been a bit out of the loop with comics lately. How in the world did I miss Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, get slaughtered and revived as a frankenstein-like monster?  I missed there first fight, but this week Franken-Castle gets a rematch with the man that killed him, Wolverine’s son Daken.  Fraken-Castle #19 brings us part two of “Punishment”, which crosses over with Dark Wolverine.

Written by Rick Remender with pencils/ink by Tony Moore. Here is how Marvel Comics describes the new issue:

“The rematch you begged for: Punisher vs Daken! A few months ago, Wolverine’s son hunted down Frank Castle at the behest of a vengeance-seeking Norman Osborn and sliced him to ribbons. But Frank’s feeling better now, and he’s ready for round two – as Franken-Castle! Everything you ever wanted all in one comic – in the most brutal, down-in-the-dirt, blood-soaked, slugfest the law will allow per page — guaranteed to kick you right in your damned face, in mighty Marvel fashion, naturally.”

The issue hits stands earlier today!

Singer and Vaughn’s X-Men?

Remember when I posted this image?

Bryan Singer X-Men First Class

I was gladly announcing that Bryan Singer had kissed and made up with Fox and would be returning to direct the newest X-Men flick (X-Men: First Class). Over the past two weeks, I have kept tight lipped with all of the news regarding the project. First Singer had to give up directing due to a commitment to a Warner Brothers film, then the rumors were flying that Singer would still produce with Matthew Vaughn directing. I didn’t want to get excited about the idea (hey, I was just burned by Singer being pulled off the project).

Now, Hollywood Reporter is saying that Matthew Vaughn will indeed be directing X-Men: First Class with Bryan Singer producing the film, which is expected to relaunch the X-Men franchise and get the bad taste of X3 and Wolverine out of our systems. I loved Stardust and very much enjoyed Vaughn’s latest effort, Kick-Ass (see the Mini Movie Review sidebar for more of my thoughts). I can’t put into words how excited I now am for this project. Lets just hope that Fox buds out and lets Singer and Vaughn go wild and make a truly memorable X-Men film.

The film will hit theaters two weeks before Green Lantern on June 3rd, 2011.

Singer Rejoins the X-Men

Bryan Singer X-Men First Class

I have been waiting for this news for a while! Bryan Singer is returning to the X-Men film series and will be helming an origin/prequel X-Men: First Class.

The film will likely be Wolverine-less and focus on Professor Xavior’s first class of students, established in the prior films as Jean Grey (maybe now they can call her Marvel Girl), Scott Summers (Cyclops), Hank McCoy (The Beast), and Ororo Munroe (Storm). This differs from the comic’s first class, which included Angel and Iceman, who joined the team later in the movies.

Going back to an origin/prequel is both good and bad. It lets us avoid the horrible conclusion of X-Men: The Last Stand, and gives Singer the freedom to do something new with fresh young faces.  X-Men Origins: Wolverine was a bad film, but some of the young versions of the team worked well. Tim Pocock as Scott Summers was a good fit, and Tahyna Tozzi looked the part of Emma Frost. What are the chances that First Class could be the team against the Hellfire Club? Would be awesome, but I doubt we’ll ever see it. I didn’t like Taylor Kitsch as Gambit upon first viewing, but he has been growing on me in repeat viewings. With a better script, and better director, I think he could be good.

X-Men vs Mr. Sinister? The “First Class” meets the Morlocks? There are so many possibilites for this film and sequels. Maybe they could have Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine pull a “Days of Future Past” type of deal and come from a Sentinel run future to stop it. Hopefully, with Singer back at the helm, X-Men will be as great as it can be.

I hope everyone has had a nice week. Today we have a poster, fan made trailer, along with some other stuff. Enjoy!

  • A big fan of Smallville and Buffy the Vampire Slayer had way tooooo much time on their hands! (YouTube)
  • 3 on 3 NHL Arcade reminds me a lot of NBA Jam. (IGN)
  • Have I said lately how much I love having full episodes of TV shows online? In the Family Guy episode “Road to Germany”, “Brian and Stewie travel back in time and land in Nazi-era Germany.” (Hulu)
  • Will Ferrell is the bright spot on Broadway? (Variety)
