Charmed

Charmed ended in 2006 after eight successful seasons on the WB. The series focused on three sisters; originally Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano, and Shannen Doherty as Piper, Phoebe, and Prue Halliwell, but Doherty left the show after season 3 and was replaced by Rose McGowan as Paige. It is over a decade since the show ended and the CW (which replaced the WB) is eyeing a reboot prequel series.

TV Line reports that the new series will take place in 1976 and focus on three witches fighting evil in a small New England town. While none of the original actors are attached to the new series (yet?) there are possibilities that they can connect the shows via time travel (which occurred on the original series), or by having the characters appear as kids (maybe a demon is hunting future witches). In the very least the new show has to include a cameo by Holly Marie Combs, who was the only star of the show to appear in every episode. The show is being brought back to life by Jennie Snyder Urman, an executive producer of the CW’s Jane the Virgin.

If you are bummed that none of the original characters are slated to return, back in 2010 there was a comic series that continued the story of the Halliwell sisters and took place after the TV series finale. Zenescope Entertainment created two “seasons” of the comic, which spanned 44 issues. The series ended last September, with no news if the comic will continue with a season 11.

From Warner Bros. Pictures, Blade Runner 2049 has Harrison Ford returning to his iconic role of Rick Deckard, and is joined by Ryan Gosling, a new blade runner in a much different future. The sci-fi sequel also stars Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, Jared Leto, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, and Lennie James, with direction by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario, Enemy). It hits theaters on October 6th, 2017.

Midnight Chronicles

Today we’re going to spotlight a movie from one of the hardest sub-genres to tackle; independent fantasy films. Midnight Chronicles from director Christian T. Petersen and Fantasy Flight Games has the uphill battle of establishing a whole world, its rules, and setting the players in place on a low budget.

What is Midnight Chronicles about? It has been a hundred years since the Shadow fell… The dark god Izrador reigns victorious. After three ages of scheming and war, Izrador has finally defeated the heroes and armies of the free races. Now the dark god rules the world of Aryth with an iron fist. Enslaved under the Shadow, the race of men leads an oppressed existence, and the Elves and Dwarves have retreated to distant forests and mountains, where their desperate resistance is slowly succumbing to the unyielding might of the Shadow. It is a time of overwhelming darkness. The fickle flame of hope is almost extinguished, its dying light guarded only by those few heroes who still dare to dream of freedom.

Good vs evil. Heroes vs villains. Low budget production values and charm? Yeah, I’m down. You can check out Midnight Chronicles online for free on Snag Films, it is also on Amazon Video (free with Amazon Prime membership).

Zombie Pirates

Hey everyone, it has been a while but we’re back spotlighting some fun free movies that you can find online. Today’s pick is Captain Z and the Leviathan of Terror from indie VOD distributor Indie Rights Movies.

The movie from 2014 is a horror comedy from director Steve Rudzinski, who also helmed indie horror flicks Red Christmas and Everyone Must Die! Captain Z does not take itself serious with a tone that has been compared to one of my favorite flicks, Army of Darkness. Low budget charm mixed with horror and comedy? You have my attention.

Official Description: In 1714 Captain Zachariah Zicari stops a group of possessed townsfolk from using a powerful amulet that would have released the ultimate evil, the Leviathan. Fast forward to 2014 and the amulet is again in the wrong hands. Can Captain Z save the earth? (Source: IMDB)

Throw some popcorn on and click here to watch Captain Z and the Leviathan of Terror for free! The movie stars  Zoltan Zilai, Madison Siple, Steve Rudzinski, and Aleen Isley.

Captain America Steve Rogers Issue1As much as I love Sam Wilson, I have to admit I’m glad to see Steve Rogers back in the blue and red and stripes. And I’m sorta happy that Marvel is taking things to a new level with Captain America and not feeling forced to have just one. Why not expand to multiple Captain Americas? The world is a big place and can use more true heroes.

The new series, which will premiere on Free Comic Book Day will be by the creative team of writer Nick Spencer and artist Jesus Saiz. Spencer also writes Sam Wilson: Captain America, and will continue to do so.

The writer described the approach to the series on Marvel.com and how it differs from Sam Wilson: Captain America; “I get to tell two very different kinds of Captain America stories. If you’re liking what we’re doing in Captain America: Sam Wilson, with a more topical, of-the-moment take, we’ve got a lot more of that coming your way; but if you’re looking for that classic, timeless version, the one that’s steeped in the Greatest Generation with Cap fighting the face of true evil, now we’ve got that for you as well. I think they’ll complement each other nicely.”

Are you excited that Steve Rogers is going to be Captain America again?
