daily filmmaking tips

Okay, so I know I have shared plenty of tips for websites. We’ve talked about their importance in advertising (both your movie, company, and you as a filmmaker), link exchanges to network, and how they can make you look more professional. When someone is checking up on you, you can be sure that they will google search you and find your website.

There are a few key aspects that we have talked about to putting together a good website, including domain names, site design, and hosting.  Recently, one of my movie sites had a surge of visitors and while I thought everything was good [behind the scenes], the site crashed and then the interest in the site died.  What happened? I made a mistake by not monitoring my stats and monthly bandwidth. And because of this I did notice when I ran out of space and the site was taken offline by the host.

How can you fix this?  By finding the perfect web host. Your host is so important to not only keeping your website online, but also to keep it loading fast and with no missing images/glitches. A good web host will be easy to navigate and find all of the information that you need. You have to know how to control access to your website and its FTP, you need security and to know that no hackers will be getting in, you need multiple stats counters that break down your visitors along with their IP addresses and browsers they are using to get to you, easy access to a file manager, easy online bill pay with automatic reminders. It is also nice to find web hosts that offer a lot of perks, like full libraries of codes, CGI scripts, and advertising tools. Don’t just settle for any one, find the perfect host for the space you need and the visitors that you think you’ll be getting.

The Walking Dead

After two awesome episodes that have gotten both great ratings and positive reviews, AMC has gone ahead and renewed The Walking Dead for a 13 episode second season. The series has been breaking cable records with high ratings in adults 18 to 49 and had the biggest premiere ever for the Fox International Channels.

The comic series by Robert Kirkman was brought to television by producer and director Frank Darabont and stars Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Sarah Wayne Callies, Laurie Holden, Jeffrey DeMunn, Steven Yeun, Emma Bell, and Chandler Riggs. The third episode of the six episode first season airs this Sunday at 10pm.

The comic is also at a creative high as it heads to issue 80 and “No Way Out”. Just when Rick was starting to feel safe, it looks like the walls will be caving in on his happy new neighborhood (literally!).

Geektastic

Okay, so I was going to wait until after Thanksgiving to restart the Geektastic Wishlist, but than I got to thinking. To ensure enough time to get everything that you want for the Holidays shipped to you on time, it is much better to start ordering everything as early as possible.

Today’s addition to the Geektastic Wishlist are these funny t-shirts from Nerdy Shirts.  The website has a ton of awesome geekware and t-shirts inspired by cult movies, television shows, video games, Internet, and comics.  I picked out three shirts in particular that I absolutly love. The one on the left is inspired by The Princess Bride, the middle is Back to the Future, and who doesn’t love zombies?

nedryshirts

Don’t get me wrong, there are a ton of places to get really nice men’s fashion, but finding the right gift for the special geek or nerd takes a little more effort and thought. Nerdy Shirts also has a section dedicated to Star Wars.  I really dig the Stormtrooper Face T-Shirt.  The Los Angeles based website also sells hoodies, watches, belt buckles, and headbands.  Included in the section for watches are a retro calculator watch and a TV remote control watch. Both are very geeky and extremely cool.

As always, if you have suggestions for stuff that should be on the Geektastic Wishlist, we want to hear them! Feel free to post them in our comments or via our contact form.

This Friday, my personal favorite Lois Lane, Teri Hatcher, guests stars on the newest episode of Smallville. Hatcher will be portraying Lois’ mother, who passed away while Lois was just a child. Also guest starring in the episode is Julian Sands and the big screen Supergirl Helen Slater as Jor-El and Lara, Clark’s parents from Krypton. This is the first time we will see Jor-El and Lara together and the first time we will see the Jor-El from the Fortress and not just hear his voice. What change causes this to happen? You’ll have to watch the new episode on the CW this Friday to find out. Below is the episode’s preview.

The Walking Dead TV SeriesSo, you don’t get AMC on your television?  Sadly, the home of such shows as Mad Men and Rubicon doesn’t air their episodes online… that is until now (and just this once). AMC’s has posted the pilot episode for its newest show The Walking Dead (based on the best ongoing comic currently on the market) online!

The series follows a Sheriff’s deputy, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) who is injured in the line of duty and is put into a coma. When he wakes up, he finds that the world has been overrun by zombies and his family is missing. That is all that I’m going to say, the series is really good. If you have AMC and just missed that episode, than you should watch it online.  If you don’t get AMC I feel your pain, but watch the pilot online and then find a friend that gets AMC. You have to know someone that gets it. Anyhow, you can watch the pilot episode here. The episode will be available online until 9pm pst on November 23rd, 2010. Also, you can head over here to check out the first volume of the graphic novel adapted into a motion comic. I have no idea how they do this, but it is truly outstanding.
