This is a little tricky for me. I haven’t picked up a DC Comics series in a while, you see, they burned me out with too many crossovers and absolutely no reason in the madness (asides making me poor and letting me down). I needed a break from them… but than I see this logo: “Reign of Doomsday”.

Outsiders issue #37 is actually part two of DC Comic’s latest crossover event, “Reign of Doomsday”. Yeah, the monster that killed Superman and destroyed much of Metropolis is back and ready to beat down the heroes of the DC Comics Universe. The storyline began in the first issue of the new Steel series, which I will be going out to get this week so I can figure out what the heck is happening. Here is the official description of the new Outsiders issue:

In Markovia, the Eradicator struggles in battle against the murder-machine known as Doomsday! It’s a fight to the death with the lives of Geo-Force, Katana, the Looker, Halo and the Olympian all hanging in the balance! Meanwhile, under arrest by the U.S. government, Black Lightning and his Outsiders team find their backs against the wall as they’re forced to choose between a lifetime of imprisonment or leading an invasion of their former home base in Markovia!

The issue hits stands next Wednesday, March 9th, 2011. It is written by Dan DiDio and contains art from Keith Giffen and Mick Gray.

Okay, so these aren’t the first posters that Fox has released for the upcoming prequel, X-Men First Class, but I gotta say, I dig them. The first image is of James McAvoy as a very hairy Professor X-

And the next is of Michael Fassbender, who looks just as pissed off as the Magento we know and love.

I love the style with the reflections in the water and the contrast between the backgrounds, showing the characters very different paths and history. I’ve said it before, and don’t get me wrong I have a ton of faith in Matthew Vaughn, I really hope this new flick is able to be true to the other movies and actually be good (unlike the god awful prequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the just as bad sequel X3). How about you, getting excited yet?

Remember that awesome Mortal Kombat: Rebirth “spec” short film made during the summer? The really awesome gritty crime drama take on the series from Fame director Kevin Tancharoen? Well thankfully the folks at Warner Brothers were as impressed with it as us fans were and decided to greenlight it into a digital series to coincide with the release of the all new Mortal Kombat game. Well, we have our first image of Jeri Ryan reprising the role of Sonya Blade.

Michael Jai White will also be reprising his role of Jax from the short, with ??Darren Shahlavi portraying Kano. Warner Brother’s press release mentions that we’ll see both Sub-Zero and Scorpion, in addition to other famed Kombat series characters. The upcoming series will feature nine short episodes. I can’t wait to see what they come up with.

Rumor has it that Kevin Costner will be joining Henry Cavill in Zack Synder’s Superman reboot. Deadline broke the story, saying that Costner’s role would be a key role in the superhero film but they didn’t have the information on who he would be portraying.

Let me start by saying that I think Costner is awesome actor and that I’d love to see him in the new Superman flick. He would, without a doubt, be a perfect fit for Jonathan Kent, Superman’s adoptive earth father. Costner has all of the qualities needed to shape Clark Kent into the Man of Steel. He just gives off the vibe of  a caring and loving father, and has fit well as a country man in the past (Field of Dreams!).

Snyder has mentioned that the new film would explore the time between when Clark Kent leaves Smallville and before he settles into Metropolis. In the current DC Comics continuity, Clark spend that time traveling the world learning about different cultures and saving people in secret. I would love if the new movie kept Jonathan Kent alive and well, unlike the past series of films (Donnor through Singer). In the comic Jonathan lived for quite a while and was able to see Clark not only become Superman, but save the would countless times, die fighting Doomsday, rise from the dead, marry Lois Lane, etc. I always felt that Superman having both Jonathan and Martha Kent, two loving parents, in his life is what really separated him from Batman. It is what allows him to be a beacon of light and hope, instead of the rage and darkness that Batman feels.

Either way I think casting Kevin Costner as Pa Kent would be a great move and I have high hopes with where the new Superman film is going.

This year we’ve had an onslaught of pilot news. Just this past week we learned about new pilots with Michael Emerson and James Van Der Beek, along with who will be portraying Wonder Woman. But the news I got sent to me this morning is without a doubt the coolest pilot plot summary that I’ve heard yet. It is a fantastic twist on the zombie horror/survival genre.

Warner Brothers has entered production on Awakening for the CW over in Toronto.  The pilot script was written by experienced television writers William Laurin and Glenn Davis and is being directed by David Von Ancken, who has directed episodes for shows including Californication, Cold Case, CSI: NY, and most recently The Vampire Diaries.

Now that I got the basic information out of the way, listen to this plot summary (I can not confirm or deny the details, but I hope it is legit):

Centers on two sisters who come of age and face off against one another amidst the beginning of a zombie uprising. It centers on the older one, who is a public defender. Jenna Lestrade is a hard-working public defender who is very much in love with her handsome boyfriend, Matt. But Jenna has a shocking secret that she had been hiding for years. She is a zombie — one of thousands who pass as humans and live among everyday people in everyday jobs. It’s a strain for Jenna to pass as “normal” – and it’s even more of a strain because the “pre-dead” (i.e., alive) Matt has no idea of her true nature. Meanwhile, the ranks of the Living Dead are being transformed by a mass Awakening, in which the hidden zombies are coming out of hiding to express themselves as who they are — not to mention hunt for fresh meat. The last Awakening, some 40-plus years ago, proved disastrous for the Living Dead, who were hunted down by deadly Hunters who destroyed them like rats.

Okay, who doesn’t want to watch Awakening right now? I hope that the pilot is good. And even more I hope that next season we have more zombies on television (the wait until October for more Walking Dead episodes is too darn long!).

Here at My Hollywood Dream we like to cover as much of Hollywood and the world of entertainment that we can (minus the ugly gossip). With that I welcome you to another edition of The Pit – Fall into it.

  • Queen-Geek and Dr. Horrible love interest Felicia Day is expanding her work online with a new web series that adapts the popular RPG series Dragon Age. It’ll be very cool to see Day, who stars and produces the video game related series The Guild, step into full on fantasy mode with Dragon Age: Redemption. The series takes place in an unspecified time in the ten year time span of the new entry into the fantasy game series, Dragon Age 2. The actual episodes fall in the six to nine minute range, which is very common for web shows, who viewers usually have a rather short attention span.
  • Sarah Jessica Parker wants to make a third Sex and the City movie. Thankfully no one else wants to.
  • Michael Emerson, Lost‘s creepy Ben, has been cast in a new pilot for JJ Abrams. Person of Interest sees him as a mysterious (wouldn’t have it any other way with Emerson) billionaire who teams up with an ex-CIA agent who is thought to be dead to stop violent crimes in New York City. No word on who will be the ex-CIA agent. If picked up, the show would be heading to CBS.
  • There is a Facebook event page promoting February 21st as “Send a Naked picture of yourself to Steve Buscemi Day” showing us that there is a Facebook page for just about anything. I’m so disturbed by the group that no, I will not post a link here. You’ll have to actually search for that yourself.
  • In another bit of TV casting new, Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek will be portraying… James Van Der Beek in the ABC pilot Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apt. 23. In the series he’d be an over the top version of himself, much in the vein of Neil Patrick Harris’ hysterical performance in the original Harold & Kumar (the sequel is best left forgotten).

Excited about Day’s new series? More interested in another Sex in the City sequel? How long do you think the Beek’s new series will last?

Thankfully Fox’s Lone Star was canceled in the blink of an eye, otherwise the lovely Adrianne Palicki would have not been available to be the new Wonder Woman for David E. Kelly and NBC.  You might remember Palicki from the first couple seasons of one of the best shows to grace the small screen, Friday Night Lights. There is played a bit of a selfish bitch, but a little bit of that spice might be good for the amazon princess turned superhero.

The new series is said to be a serious take on the character where Wonder Woman is a billionaire CEO who moonlights as a vigilante in Los Angeles. Very Batman-ish if you ask me.  I just hope they keep her amazon backstory in place and maybe include some other DC Comics heroes into the mix down the line, as Smallville has very successfully done. It would be really cool if they connected the show somehow to Smallville or the new DC film universe with Ryan Reynold’s Green Lantern and Henry Cavill’s Superman.

Casting sheets have revealed that the only other familiar character in the series at this point is long time WW love interest Steve Trevor. He is described as an Army vet who now works with the Justice department. We’ll have to wait and see if anyone else (villains perhaps?) from WW’s history makes it into the mix.
