The Pit, My Hollywood Dream Column

It might be mid-week, but it feels like the perfect time for a new edition of The Pit. Enjoy!

  • Last night, Conan O’Brien was hysterical as the new host of The Tonight Show. If you missed it, you can thankfully check it out online. God, I love Hulu.
  • Hollywood the Game, the film and television simulation game, is entering the last week of their virtual television season. What is on the air? Click here to find out.
  • Anthony Stewart Head really wants to do a Buffy the Vampire Slayer Giles spin-off movie and series. The project, titled Ripper, has been in development for a long time, will we finally see it come to life? Gosh, I hope so!
  • The Inside Report has released an all new episode that features an interview with the UK based documentary filmmaker, Jamie McDine. The award winning filmmaker going into detail about what it is like to make documentaries and why he has chosen this path.
  • CNN takes a look at some of the happenings at E3.

No more remakes, leave Buffy and Aliens alone

Not once, but twice this week I’ve been pissed off so much that I haven’t felt like writing about movies or the movie business.  Earlier this week came a report that Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are working with Fran and Kaz Rubel on a remake/relaunch of Buffy the Vampire Slayer without the input of creator Joss Whedon. Now there is a report that Fox is going forward with a remake of Alien. Seriously, why?

I enjoyed the original Buffy movie, but was completely blown away by the television show. Like many fans, I’ve followed the characters I love into the comics and will continue to follow them into the future. A future we all hoped might include a feature film. Now we get word that a feature is in the works. A feature without Joss Whedon? Without Sarah Michelle Gellar? Without David Boreanaz? No James Marsters? Alyson Hannigan? Anthony Head?  Buffy is nothing without the world Joss created. If they want to go ahead and make a movie about a vampire slayer, than go ahead, why in the world would they want to piss off a fan base and call it Buffy the Vampire Slayer when it isn’t. Worse yet, when that movie tanks, it will hurt… or kill… our chances of ever seeing a REAL Buffy movie.

20th Century Fox, the franchise killer, is going to remake Alien. Ridley Scott’s original sci-fi horror film is near perfect and was followed by one of the best action sci-fi films of all time, James Cameron’s Aliens. Do they think they can top those two films?  Anything they come up with to remake this franchise will be a waste of time and as craptastic as Fox’s recent Alien vs Predator films. I really wish that Fox would stop wasting our time and stop pissing on beloved movies.

For some strange reason, it really does not feel like the weekend. Anyhows, here are a few articles and videos to keep you busy with your morning coffee, tea, hot coca, or whatever you might prefer.

  • JCVD is out in limited release in New York City! Next week it expands to six more cities. Time has an excellent look at the new film starring the Muscles from Brussels in a role unlike anything he has ever been in. (Time)
  • No Good TV has an exclusive behind the scenes look at Repo! The Genetic Opera. (NGTV)
  • FOX has released a trailer for their two hour 24 TV movie, 24: Redemption.  Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) beats up a whole bunch of new bad guys… (Variety)
  • It is pretty much official, Brett Ratner is going to wreck another franchise. (THR)

How in the world is REPO! The Genetic Opera not hitting theaters midnight on Halloween? Darren Lynn Bousman’s horror musical would be the perfect way to end All Hallows Eve. Instead, we’ll have to wait until November 7th, when the film gets a limited release in Los Angeles. It is unknown if and when the film will open wide.

Lionsgate’s official description of the film; “In the not so distant future, an epidemic of organ failures devastates the planet. Out of the tragedy, a savior emerges: GeneCo, a biotech company that offers organ transplants… for a price. Those who miss their payments are scheduled for repossession and hunted by villainous Repo Men. In a world where surgery addicts are hooked on painkilling drugs and murder is sanctioned by law, a sheltered young girl searches for the cure to her own rare disease as well as information about her family’s mysterious history. After being sucked into the haunting world of GeneCo’s Genetic Opera, she won’t turn back until she finds what she’s looking for.”

There have been a ton of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” related spin off proposals (a full list can be found here), but none of them came closer to happening than “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Animated Series”.  The series was going to follow the Scooby Gang back in high school (for the first time with Dawn), with most of the cast reprising their roles (sans Sarah Michelle Gellar), and most of the writing team on board to write episodes.  The idea seemed solid, but for unknown reasons it never made it to air. Now, almost four years later, the pilot presentation has been leaked online!  Watch it, have your friends watch it, with enough views or the right hype, maybe all this time later it will make it to air. Weirder things have happened.

For now, enjoy!
