We were thrilled to chat with director Jeff Orgill about his independent film, Boppin’ at the Glue Factory.

boppin_title

Who?
Boppin’ at the Glue Factory, directed by Jeff Orgill, is a satire which incorporates a variety of likeable characters spearheaded by the very talented Henry Dittman and Conrad Roberts. Ditman plays Eric Labudde, an addicted nurse who can get away with anything, and Roberts plays jazz man Tharin Sanders. Together they form an unlikely partnership all in the name of getting high.

This is lead actor Henry Dittman’s first leading role in a feature length motion picture. Conrad Roberts, as jazzman Tharin Sanders, has memorable roles in Mosquito Coast as Mr. Haddy and in Serpent and the Rainbow as Christophe. Mews Small’s, as Mary LeDoux, most recognizable role was as Candy, Jack Nicholson’s partying girlfriend in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest who deflowers Billy Bibbit.

The story is by Jeff Orgill and Hector Maldonado, with the screenplay by Jeff Orgill and B. Scott O’Malley (of Bleak Future fame). The film is being distributed by Indie Rights (Online) and Passion River Films (DVD).

Boppin At The Glue Factory

What?
Desperate for a place to live and for his next fix, drug-addled nurse Eric LaBudde (Henry Dittman) lands a job in a ramshackle convalescent home, where he develops a mutually enabling relationship with jazz saxophone-playing resident Tharin Sanders (Conrad Roberts). As Eric charms his way into the home’s drug cabinet, he inadvertently brings some light to the retirees’ grim lives.

Where?
Boppin’ at The Glue Factory takes place in St. Joseph’s Convalescent Home – a grim geriatric care facility. The shooting location was in Norwalk, California at the Metropolitan State Hospital at a decommissioned building that had also been featured in Tim Burton’s Ed Wood.

Boppin at the Glue Factory

When?
Boppin’ at The Glue Factory finished post-production in 2009 and after an award-winning festival run was released through Prescreen.com, Passion River Films and Indie Rights for online distribution.

Boppin At The Glue Factory

Why?
When director Jeff Orgill discovered his video camera was missing and had been pawned by his junkie friend and roommate he was inspired to explore the relationship between addiction, friendship and co-dependency. Orgill fathomed issues about complicity, enabling behavior, trust and betrayal as he grappled with the personal horror of finding your best friend was not who he appeared to be. By transposing his personal predicament to the world of health care in an old age facility, Orgill was able to get some needed distance from this painful personal story, working in a more social and satirical commentary about a bleak American institution – the “old folks home” AKA “the glue factory.”

How does Mad Max meets Grindhouse by the way of Kill Bill sound to you? Pretty darn good if you as as much of an action junkie as I am. Kristanna Loken, Eve, Beverly D’Angelo, Christian Pitre, and the one and only Gary Busey star in Bounty Killer, currently in theaters and VOD. The movie is based on graphic novel of the same name. In a post-apocalypse future, where the government has been taken over by corporations, the people have begun to fight back. Death warrants have been issued for all white collar criminals , and Bounty Killers compete against each other for “body count, fame and a fat stack of cash.” The action comedy follows Mary Death (Pitre), the top “Bounty Killer” in the world.

After almost 10 years, Kid-N-Play are back to parrrrrrty! Okay, they may not be back to to “party”, but they are back in House Party: Tonight’s the Night. The rap duo took off the last sequel, House Party 4: Down to the Last Minute, but are back to mentor a new group of high school rapers. The new movie mixes the house party concept with street/club dancing to take the series in a bit of a new direction. The DVD came out yesterday, July 23rd, and you can win a copy here!

Official Movie Description: A pair of high school rappers have two major goals – make music and get hot girls. The best way to get both is to throw the biggest and best house party ever! The night of the party, one of the boys is grounded by his parents, so it’s up to his best friend to break him out of his house confinement and get the party started.

Ah, good old fashion teenage rapper hyjinks. To enter the contest, all that you have to do is leave a comment with the most inventive way to break out of your house if you were grounded on an important day. That is right, you have to put yourself into the shoes of an immature and emotional high schooler. While you get creative and plan out your “escape route,” mix some beats on the “House Party 5 Sound Board App” and check out images and the trailer for the all new House Party: Tonight’s the Night…

Okay, so we are very light on new releases today, but we do have some interesting stuff on DVD and Blu-Ray. Lets take a look at what we have…

Predators
Based on a story by and produced by Robert Rodriguez, this film directed by Nimród Antal was looking to relaunch and revitalize the Predator horror franchise. With a cast that includes Oscar winner Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Laurence Fishburne and Danny Trejo, the film followed a group of convicts and army types who are transported to an alien world and hunted for sport. The film is coming out on both DVD and Blu-Ray.

Agora
A historical drama from Alejandro Amenábar with Rachel Weisz, Max Minghella, and Oscar Isaac. Weisz portrays Hypatia of Alexandria. The film came out in a very limited release. I honestly haven’t even heard of it until now.

That is it in terms of new releases, but we have a couple cool reissues.

Seven Samurai
The classic action flick from Akira Kurosawa is coming out in Blu-Ray as part of the Criterion Collection. In the film, a poor village is under attack by bandits when they turn to seven out of work samurai to protect them. If you haven’t seen the film, it is worth checking out.

The Bionic Woman – Season 1
The hit action series from the seventies is finally on DVD. The series was a spinoff from The Six Million Dollar Man. In it, Lindsay Wagner is Jaime Sommers, a young woman and tennis professional who is nearly killed in a skydiving accident and is rebuilt with bionic parts that give her superhuman powers.

Other notable Blu-Ray releases:

  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show (35th Anniversary Edition)
  • Apocalypse Now (Three-Disc Full Disclosure Edition)
  • Psycho (50th Anniversary Edition)

What will you be taking home this week?

Angel TV Show

One of my favorite shows ever, Joss Whedon’s Angel, is currently on sale from Amazon with a killer price. All 110 episodes of the series for only 50 bucks, a value worth over 80 dollars of savings.

Spinning off from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel (portrayed by David Boreanaz), the vampire with a soul leaves the love of his life and heads to Los Angeles where he does his best to help the helpless. He is join with a few familiar faces from his days on Buffy, including Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter) and Wesley Wyndam-Pryce (Alexis Denisof), and gets visited by Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Oz (Seth Green), and Spike (James Marsters), among others.

I doubt this deal will last more than 24 hours, so pick it up while you can!

Last week saw the releases of Iron Man 2, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, and Get Him to the Greek, but this week we don’t have many “new” movies. Regardless, we have a lot of new Blu-Rays to sink our teeth in.

The Karate Kid

I just finally saw this remake starring the little Smith and Jackie Chan. I gotta say, I actually really dug it. Very well done, and while keeping the spirit of the original, it wasn’t a direct rip off. They made it feel fresh. My only gripe was the bizarre and unneeded “dark side” of Chan’s character. It came out of nowhere and was forgotten just as fast.

Baseball: The Tenth Inning
Also new this week is the PBS documentary from directors Ken Burns and Lynn Novick that takes a look at baseball between 1992 and 2009. “As the tumultuous twentieth century is drawing to a close, and a new millennium begins, baseball continues to reflect the complicated country that created it.” I haven’t seen this one, but the reviews have been pretty positive. If you are a fan of baseball, you’ll likely dig it.

Bones: The Complete Fifth Season
I’ve been a big fan of David Boreanaz since his Buffy/Angel days, but I just haven’t been able to get into this series. Boreanaz is a special agent, who teams up with Dr. Temperance Brennan, portrayed by Emily Deschanel, to solve murders based on bones that are discovered. With over 100 episodes under their belt, there are fans of this series, but I doubt you’ll be getting this unless you are already a fan.

In addition to our new movies and TV, we have some firsts to Blu-Ray, including:

  • Beauty and the Beast
  • The Last of the Mohicans: Director’s Definitive Cut
  • The Maltese Falcon

And new to DVD:

  • The Mary Tyler Moore Show: The Complete Seventh Season

What will you be picking up?
