In part 1 we started putting together our new DCEU Justice League team. We included in the mix The Flash (Ezra Miller), Supergirl (Sasha Calle), Green Lantern John Stewart (John Boyega), and Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell). In part 2 we’re going to round out our eight member Justice League team. I got an assist on this from our contributor and friend Kris Greet.

Hawkman (Aldis Hodge)

Aldis Hodge was cast as Hawkman in the upcoming Dwayne Johnson led Black Adam movie and talk about fantastic casting! I seriously can not wait to see him and the rest of the JSA fight (or team up?) with Black Adam. I hope that Hawkman survives the movie, and if he does he’d be a perfect fit for the new Justice League.

John Constantine (Matt Ryan)

While talking about being perfectly cast I need to mention Matt Ryan as John Constantine. He looks and sounds exactly how I always expected John Constantine would. He is ripped directly from the page. He was great in his own short lived show, and I was glad to see him return for the the CW and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. With the character gone from the series, he should be the magical anchor for the Justice League (or the go between for the League and for the Justice League Dark!). He can be the version we already met, or he could be an all new version of the character (thank you multiverse!). Just like JK Simmons as J Jonah Jameson in the Spider-Man movies, if you have the perfect person in the role, just keep using them!

The Atom Ryan Choi (Zheng Kai)

Okay, so this pick might cause a little controversy. Zheng Kai was cast and filmed scenes as Ryan Choi (pre becoming The Atom) for the 2017 Justice League, but was cut from the final movie. Then in ZSJL cut, his scenes were restored. I love the character of the Atom. Brandon Routh made a great Ray Palmer Atom (in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow), and Kai has the potential to excel as Ryan Choi. With the multiverse, it does not matter what cut he appeared or didn’t appear in. I think we can use this casting and look forward instead of looking back.

Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot)

I can not imagine a Justice League team without at least one of the big three. Gadot is returning for Wonder Woman 3, so why not also another JL movie? She is perfect in the role and would be the proper choice to lead the new team into battle.

Presenting our new imagined Justice League Unlimited:

In part 3 we will talk about potential villains for our new Justice League to face off against. What do you think about our overall team?

For the past year or so there have been rumors that the upcoming DCEU movie The Flash was going to reboot the movie universe (or multiverse) for future DC Comics movies. This seemed even more likely after both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton were cast as Batman (both reprising their past takes on the character). Now the rumors have fired up again, and this time with the added unconfirmed (no spoilers here) rumor that the rebooted universe may get its own Justice League.

Lets take a moment to look at who could be in this… Justice League Unlimited.

The Flash (Ezra Miller)

If The Flash will reshape the universe, they are putting a lot on Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen/Flash and he will need to be the glue to keep the new Justice League together. I can not imagine them moving forward in that way without him being a part of the new team.

Supergirl (Sasha Calle)

We have only seen her briefly in the trailer for The Flash, but can tell that she will be a key part of the movie (and future movies?). We have an excellent Superman on TV with Superman & Lois, so maybe having a different member of the Superman family as part of the DCEU’s Justice League makes sense. And there is where Sasha Calle’s version of Supergirl comes into play. From the suit design we can already tell that she is a version of the character we have not seen in live-action (a very different version than the Arrow-verse one). Someone on the team needs to have the “S”, so why not Supergirl?

Green Lantern John Stewart (John Boyega)

No, before you start any rumors, John Boyega has not been cast as John Stewart for the upcoming HBO Max series Green Lanterns Corps! But they should! We are now getting into the area of fan casting. Boyega is a fantastic actor and has the perfect balance of toughness and smarts that makes up John Stewart. I know that somewhere in the DC multiverse is Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan waiting to light up his CGI suit, but if there is a Green Lantern as part of this new DCEU, I really hope that John Stewart is a part of it.

Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell)

There is no reason for the new DCEU not to pick and choose characters from past DC movies that deserve to be seen again. Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary was a new take on a classic character that worked really well in the Birds of Prey movie and she’d be a welcome addition to a new Justice League. Like the Avengers, you need to balance the team with not only god-like powerful characters, but grounded heroes as well. With Smollett-Bell reprising the role in an upcoming HBO Max movie, it would make sense for her to crossover into the wider new DCEU.

In part 2 of “Who Should Be in a DCEU JLUnlimited?” we will explore more fan casting of characters we haven’t seen yet along with a few familiar faces (maybe even a TV character that should make the jump). Who do you want to see in a new Justice League?

At long last… and with much skepticism… the Justice League trailer is here.

Official Description: Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

As exciting as it is to have these characters on screen together, the costumes feel off and while overall the vibe is lighter in tone, the movie is still so dark. The lack of Superman in the trailer is understandable, but it makes the team and movie feel so incomplete. Without Superman it is not the Justice League. One of Batman v Superman‘s biggest mistakes is now hurting any anticipation I want to have for the team up.

The movie hits theaters on November 17, 2017.

Hot off the news that FOX has picked up Gotham, a Batman prequel focusing on young Bruce Wayne and Jim Gordon before he became the police commissioner, comes the news that we’ll be seeing a lot of comic inspired shows next season! So many show sin fact that we’ll be splitting this article into multiple parts.

Captain America

Marvel’s Agent Carter (ABC)
Spinning directly out of Captain America: The First Avenger and the Agent Carter short film, Hayley Atwell returns to the role in a action series that takes place in the 1940s and recounts the origin of SHIELD.  As we reported on earlier (SEE: TV News: Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter), Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas have been tapped as showrunners, with Steve McFeely, Christopher Marcus, and Jeph Loeb executive producing. ABC’s official description: The story is set in 1946 and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life – Steve Rogers.

It should be really interesting to see how they shape the series moving forward. There are other heroes and villains from the 40s that could be interesting to see (the original robotic Human Torch or Namor for example). I wonder if they’ll tie the series into Agents of SHIELD at all. Peggy Carter stops a bad guy and finds a powerful weapon, then in the future that weapon is stolen from SHIELD and Agent Coulson’s team must find it. (possible spoiler for Captain America: The Winter Soldier). It would also be pretty cool to see the seeds of HYDRA planted in SHIELD from the beginning. Also, it’d be great to see folks like Dum Dum Dugan (Neal McDonough), Jim Morita (Kenneth Choi), and the Howling Commandos again. Plus, could we see a young Nick Fury in action? Sure, Sam Jackson wasn’t born until 1948, but in the comics Nick Fury is nearly a century old and uses the Infinity Formula to slow his aging and stay strong. Would be cool to see this element of Fury added into the mix along with seeing him rise the ranks from Agent of SHIELD to Director of the spy agency.

The Flash CW Series Details

The Flash (The CW)
Lets change pace from Marvel Comics to DC Comics for a moment as DC is bringing one of their big guns to the small screen. Justice League member and speedster Barry Allen, the Flash, is spinning directly out of DC’s other successful CW series Arrow. Barry, as portrayed by Grant Gustin, was established in a couple episodes of Arrow as a young CSI who has a keen interest in meta crimes. The CW’s official description: The Flash focuses on scientist Barry Allen (Grant Gustin), who’s given powers that transform him into the Fastest Man Alive.

On one hand I’m surprised they cast Barry so young, I always picture him as being at least in his thirties. But on the other hand it makes sense to cast him young and let Gustin grow into the role. This could also differentiate the series from a possible Flash film series, where they can make him a bit older. I’d love to see them cross villains over between The Flash and Arrow, and it could lead to a lot of other possible DC spinoffs (Green Lantern? Wonder Woman?). In addition to Gustin, the cast includes Jesse L. Martin, Danielle Panabaker, Rick Cosnett, Candice Patton, Tom Cavanagh, Carlos Valdes, and John Wesley Shipp, the Flash of the 90s television series.

nbc-constantine

Constantine (NBC)
Three heroes. Three networks. Constantine is an anti-hero from DC Comic’s dark (and magical) corner of their universe. Forget the Keanu Reeves movie, because Matt Ryan is the striking image of a young John Constantine. Maybe they will also get the rest right. The show is executive produced by David Goyer (Writer of Nolan’s Batman flicks) and directed by Neil Marshall (who helmed such movies as The Descent and Doomsday). The Wiki description of the DC Comic character: Constantine is a working-class magician, occult detective, and con man stationed in London. He is known for his endless cynicism, deadpan snarking, ruthless cunning, and constant chain smoking, but is also a passionate humanist driven by a heartfelt desire to do some good in his life.

This show needs to be dark, gritty, and with a touch of noir. A mix between Angel and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Constantine is one of those heroes that is at his best when he is beat down and on the edge of his sanity. NBC, please do not sugar coat the series or try to make it appeal to kiddies. And I hope I’m not asking too much when I say that I need Zatanna to be part of the cast; fishnets, top hat, and all. (It might be cool to also see characters like the Swamp Thing. Just saying.)

In Part 2 we will be looking at some more Comics that are being turned into television series in the 2014 – 2015 season. Which of these three shows are you excited about?

In Part 2 we took a look at possible Casting Choices for the Big Three, so now we are going to take a moment and make some suggestions for possible Casting Choices for the Supporting Heroes. Lets jump right in!

Green Lantern/Hal Jordan/John Stewart
The “Not Nathan Fillion” Choice: Warner Brothers are really in an interesting situation over this choice. Do they stick with Ryan Reynolds or do they write off the Green Lantern film and start afresh with a new Hal Jordan or even make the switch to John Stewart. Personally, I think they should stick with Reynolds. He was a decent Hal Jordan and Green Lantern. The film itself suffered from poor direction and a lack of a credible villain as well as other story problems. Give the character a better look in the film with an actual costume rather than the stupid CGI suit and I think it will be fine. If the WB does recast, you’ll see a lot of fanboys out there are screaming for the role to be given to Nathan Fillion. I think the time has come and gone for Fillion, and he said it himself that he is very busy now and I think Fillion has aged out of the role.

Another idea would be to move away from Hal Jordan and go to the John Stewart character, making him like he was in the animated series which worked so well. As far as casting I would love to see Idris Elba take the role. I know he’s part of the Marvel verse in Thor and Ghost Rider, but Reynolds was in the third Blade, Wolverine: Origins and still may play Deadpool in his own film. So it’s not a stretch to see someone portray characters in both Marvel and DC movies. Elba is just a phenomenal actor and I think he would be brilliant as John Stewart. One thing they could do is make the origin of Green Lantern an integral part of the film. He could even possibly help take charge of the league when they need it with his military background. If they decide to scrap Reynolds then I hope they consider this as an alternative.

The Flash/Barry Allen
The Breakout Choice: I think The Flash/Barry Allen character has the potential to be the breakout character of the film, just like HULK was in The Avengers. He could be the character where you could cast someone like Bradley Cooper in the role and by the time it comes to theatres, The audience would be so looking forward to seeing the big three that it’s actually The Flash that stands out the most. I would love that to happen because The Flash is a very undervalued character in the DC universe, but to me I love the character. I was always more of a Barry Allen fan than I was Wally West, but that never really mattered because they were always great stories to read. Warner Brothers seem to love Bradley Cooper so it would seem logical that they would want to get him into what will be one of their biggest productions to date. I think Cooper would be a great choice, as a lot of the new writing on The Flash has been really good. If they keep the Ryan Reynolds Hal Jordan, I could imagine seeing the pair of them stealing scenes and bringing a well needed light hearted tone to the action.

Another choice I could see Warner Brothers going for would be Armie Hammer. His stock is pretty high at the moment thanks to his breakout role in The Social Network and getting cast as the title character in The Lone Ranger opposite Johnny Depp. The same logic applies with Cooper that Warners would want to get him in the film. He has the look of Barry Allen and could do the job easily. Either way I would be happy if one of these guys were given the role.

Aquaman/Arthur Curry
The Surprising Bad Ass Choice: I think Aquaman here has the potential to change everyone’s perception of him. A lot of people underestimate his value and see him as just the guy who can talk to his fish. The potential for an Aquaman film series could be something similar to an underwater Star Wars. Along with the Flash, Aquaman could be another one of the breakout stars of the Justice League movie. As far as casting I could see them going with a semi unknown in the role which would be great. Someone like Twilight‘s Kellan Lutz would do well in the role. He could be similar to Cavill in the fact that he would essentially be stepping up to leading man status with this role. I don’t think that would happen here, but if it leads to his own franchise then certainly there.

If the powers that be at Warner Brothers go with someone more well known then I could picture Alexander Skarsgard getting the role. He has the right look and can easily play the bad ass role of the team. He is the breakout star from True Blood and has been getting some big screen exposure with his roles in Battleship, Disconnect, and the upcoming flick The East.

Well there you have it folks, my top picks for the heroes in the Justice League movie. Let’s hope we get some good news soon as to who will direct and who will be playing the various heroes. Let’s also hope that this is good news for DC Comics fans. Maybe they will finally be able to catch up to the huge head start that Marvel got on them. In two or three years time we’ll find out.

Finally Warner Brothers and DC Comics are getting their act together! The behemoth that was The Avengers this summer seems to have lit a fire underneath the suits in Burbank. First Gangster Squad writer Will Beall was given the task of scripting the film that will finally (hopefully) bring all of the big DC comics Titans together on the big screen for the first time. Last week the studio was reportedly eying Ben Affleck to direct with Harry Potter alum David Yates next on their list. Could we be finally seeing this happen? If it does here are some suggestions that I think WB/DC should take into consideration.

Story and Villains
Give the Justice League a full on challenge, not just something like the Injustice Gang plotting to take over the world. Put the whole world in danger and have this be the reason for why they have to team up. Don’t team them up simply because Joker, Luthor, Trickster, and Star Sapphire have joined forces so that means Batman, Superman, Flash and Green Lantern should team up. Throw the team together because Earth is being invaded by Darkseid and his forces from Apokolips. The story from the recent reboot, DC’s “New 52” is perfect for that. Have the Earth be in serious trouble from a real threat. Give us the full fight of the league vs Darkseid. That was my biggest complaint about The Avengers. When you took away all the geek factors and other story parts you essentially had an Alien Invasion movie with no real pay-off at the end. Instead it was a mid credits teaser where the big villain was revealed and now you have to wait presumably until The Avengers 2 to see it. Don’t do that here! Make the league face Darkseid individually and fail then lead up to them fighting together to stop him.

Creative and Personnel
Get the right people involved on the production, Hire Paul Dini and Bruce Timm from every recent memory DC Comics animated series and features to look over scripting and story details. Get Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, and Dan Jurgens to make sure DC’s interests are kept true to the comic universe. These are key to the process. Warner Brothers need to do what they been doing wrong all these years. Make this a collaborative film, pick the right storylines from the comics to help inspire the story. Now we’ve seen Ben Afflec’sk name come up already in line for the gig though his rep’s reportedly say he has passed (which I don’t believe). My gut tells me he is probably still talking to them. Yes he turned down the Man Of Steel allegedly, but he is obviously impressing people at Warner Brothers with his work. I’m a fan of his directorial work, Gone Baby, Gone and The Town were two of the best crime films I’ve seen in a long time. The guy knows his stuff, but the question remains can he do a big action film. My answer to that would be yes he probably can. He’s worked on those type films as an actor, so he would have had to picked up something along the way (good or bad). He is also a comic book geek so he will know what kind of audience he has to aim the film for as well. I think Affleck’s previous work has earned him a shot. I would also be happy with Warner’s rumored second choice, David Yates. He can make a solid film and has huge spectacle film experience. Some of the action sequences from the Harry Potter films he has directed have been nothing short of excellent. I would hope Warners interviews or talks to a few more directors before anything is made official and I hope we get to hear who they are.
