I normally do not write about Saturday Night programming. Why? Because there is nothing worth mentioning — until now!

Did you know that Brian Austin Green (Beverly Hills 90210) and Harold Perrineau Jr (Sons of Anarchy) star in a hour long musical comedy series on TBS called The Wedding Band?!? Most people do not because TBS dumped the series on Saturday’s- yet the series has been breaking cable Saturday night viewing ratings records for the network and has actually been making a case for a renewal — though I still feel like TBS is trying to burn off the series after changing its mandate from producing a mix of hour and half hour comedies. And I will say this though, the series is actually pretty funny with good covers of popular songs making me question TBS’ decision to dump the show on Saturdays.

So, what is The Wedding Band about for those who have not heard about it? The series follows a group of lifelong friends and the new guy (Perrineau) who are in a wedding band (called Mother of the Bride) and get into trouble with each and every gig they play. It is a strange mix of comedy and procedural which actually works in favor for the show as they play at different parties and get to know the people they are playing for. It works. The episodes already have ranged from weddings (that’s what they normally do) to playing at a house party for two geeky guys trying to land the girls of their dreams. The show also has had quite the guest list for a new series and has included appearances by Megan Fox, Ryan Hansen, and Bree Turner amongst others.

The show’s main strength lies in the ensemble cast. Besides BAG and HP, the series features the likes of Jenny Wade (Reaper), Melora Hardin (The Office), and Peter Cambor (NCIS: LA). This group clicks in ways most shows wish they could because they all play off each other strongly. The covers are actually pretty good, better then what we’ve seen on shows like Glee  and they twist them in ways you wouldn’t expect. Brian Austin Green shows that he actually has a pretty good singing voice (he plays the lead singer of the band), as do the others in the cast as they sing songs every so often as they switch off singing duties from time to time.

Is The Wedding Band amazing TV? No, but it’s fun and deserves a lot more attention then it is getting. If you go out on Saturdays (like most people do) I suggest that you DVR this show. It actually is worth your time. It is fun and a little bit quirky and that’s all you can ask for from a show like this and I’m glad it’s around for now (even if it is being burned off).

Episode Description, “Time of My Life:” Rutherford plans an adult prom, but she must deal with her high-school nemesis in the process. Elsewhere, Tommy woos everyone’s fantasy woman, and Stevie dates a florist with some lusty talents.

Who would have ever thought that a small drama about a biker club would become out of the most shocking shows on television? Currently in its fifth season, with the events of the last few episodes you’d think they were on the march to a series finale. The bloodshed and drama put this show on the top of the must see pile, almost edging out AMC’s Breaking Bad. for the most brutal and compelling show on television. It will be interesting if show creator Kurt Sutter can keep this high energy as the show moves into its sixth season and rumored final seventh season. For now, strap in and enjoy the ride.
