Can't Be Heaven

Today lets reach back to 2000 and an indie family comedy, Can’t Be Heaven (aka Forever Together), starring Michelle Trachtenberg, Kaley Cuoco, Diane Ladd, Gary Marshall and the “Karate Kid” Ralph Macchio. Directed by Richard Friedman, the movie deals with family, loss, and young love.

Official Description: Can’t Be Heaven is a magical, must-see romantic comedy for the whole family. Thirteen-year-old Danny is trying to cope with his father’s death, and it doesn’t help that he’s falling for his best friend, Julie. But Julie has serious a crush on the new kid in school, and she finds Danny’s affection more comical than convincing. While visiting his dad’s grave to play him a song he’s learning for the school band, Danny encounters the ghost of Hubbie Darling, a 1930s jazz saxophonist who is waiting for the spirit of his long-lost sweetheart. Hubbie takes Danny under his wing and gives him a few pointers on the fine art of romance. Eventually everyone finds their one and only- and this heartwarming tale will make you feel like falling in love all over again.

Midnight Chronicles

Today we’re going to spotlight a movie from one of the hardest sub-genres to tackle; independent fantasy films. Midnight Chronicles from director Christian T. Petersen and Fantasy Flight Games has the uphill battle of establishing a whole world, its rules, and setting the players in place on a low budget.

What is Midnight Chronicles about? It has been a hundred years since the Shadow fell… The dark god Izrador reigns victorious. After three ages of scheming and war, Izrador has finally defeated the heroes and armies of the free races. Now the dark god rules the world of Aryth with an iron fist. Enslaved under the Shadow, the race of men leads an oppressed existence, and the Elves and Dwarves have retreated to distant forests and mountains, where their desperate resistance is slowly succumbing to the unyielding might of the Shadow. It is a time of overwhelming darkness. The fickle flame of hope is almost extinguished, its dying light guarded only by those few heroes who still dare to dream of freedom.

Good vs evil. Heroes vs villains. Low budget production values and charm? Yeah, I’m down. You can check out Midnight Chronicles online for free on Snag Films, it is also on Amazon Video (free with Amazon Prime membership).

Suitable for Murder

We focus a lot on free horror movies (because good or bad, they are always fun), but today we thought it would be nice to throw in a crime thriller/indie noir into the mix. From Indie Rights Movies we have Suitable for Murder, from director Fred P. Watkins (Revenge Bites, Bikini Detectives) and starring Ali Faulkner, Jackson Bostwick, Morgana Shaw, and Nate Rubin.

Description (spoilers): Joe Mondragon, a veteran cop who gets things done, forms an unlikely partnership with Samantha Baines. She is attached to Police Intelligence Division and feels more comfortable handling a computer than a gun. Samantha’s computer skills are needed to help hack into and track two serial killers who get their victims from Internet Chat Rooms. The plan goes horribly wrong and in a fire fight between Samantha and Joe, and the two killers, Joe is killed when Samantha is unable to make herself fire her weapon at the two serial killers. Samantha feels guilty and responsible. With the help of her new friend Mimi, and the Head of Homicide, Samantha reinvents herself and avenges Joe after a relentless chase of the killers.
