Last week saw the releases of Iron Man 2, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, and Get Him to the Greek, but this week we don’t have many “new” movies. Regardless, we have a lot of new Blu-Rays to sink our teeth in.

The Karate Kid

I just finally saw this remake starring the little Smith and Jackie Chan. I gotta say, I actually really dug it. Very well done, and while keeping the spirit of the original, it wasn’t a direct rip off. They made it feel fresh. My only gripe was the bizarre and unneeded “dark side” of Chan’s character. It came out of nowhere and was forgotten just as fast.

Baseball: The Tenth Inning
Also new this week is the PBS documentary from directors Ken Burns and Lynn Novick that takes a look at baseball between 1992 and 2009. “As the tumultuous twentieth century is drawing to a close, and a new millennium begins, baseball continues to reflect the complicated country that created it.” I haven’t seen this one, but the reviews have been pretty positive. If you are a fan of baseball, you’ll likely dig it.

Bones: The Complete Fifth Season
I’ve been a big fan of David Boreanaz since his Buffy/Angel days, but I just haven’t been able to get into this series. Boreanaz is a special agent, who teams up with Dr. Temperance Brennan, portrayed by Emily Deschanel, to solve murders based on bones that are discovered. With over 100 episodes under their belt, there are fans of this series, but I doubt you’ll be getting this unless you are already a fan.

In addition to our new movies and TV, we have some firsts to Blu-Ray, including:

  • Beauty and the Beast
  • The Last of the Mohicans: Director’s Definitive Cut
  • The Maltese Falcon

And new to DVD:

  • The Mary Tyler Moore Show: The Complete Seventh Season

What will you be picking up?

Marvel Studios has released a poster for their new upcoming animated series, The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.  Featured in the poster are four of Marvel’s “big guns”, Hulk, Ironman, Thor, and Captain America. I really like the look and animation style of the new series. Reminds me of the classic Ironman and Fantastic Four series from the 90s.

Avengers Cartoon

Missing from the poster are Ant Man and The Wasp, both who have been confirmed to be in the series.  This Saturday at Comic Con, Marvel and Disney will be premiering the first two episodes, then the series is expected to start in the fall.  The art is pretty cool and the team lineup is perfect. I really hope that the series is good and that the upcoming film will be even better!

While on the subject of the film version, at Comic Con we finally got confirmation from Joss Whedon himself, that he will indeed be directing The Avengers for Marvel Comics.  With Ed Norton out as Bruce Banner, I am hoping that Marvel reveals who will be the new Hulk at Comic Con. Rumors are pointing towards Mark Ruffalo, who I think is an excellent actor and has the look for Banner.  Robert Downey Jr, Samuel L Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, and Chris Evans are all confirmed to be reprising their roles as Ironman, Nick Fury, Thor, and Captain America respectably.  We haven’t had any word on who might be portraying Ant-Man or Wasp, who usually get the short end of the stick (see above poster, also).  I could picture someone like Nathan Fillion as Ant-Man, but I have no ideas for Wasp.

Who do you think could fill the roles?

PJ found this video, but I couldn’t resist reposting it because it is pretty darn awesome. I’d go see this in theaters…

Avengers Prime issue 1, Thor, Ironman, Captain America

Okay, I know that I’m been focusing on Marvel titles a lot lately, but what can I say the Heroic Age stuff has peaked my interest.  In Avengers Prime #1 we get Marvel’s big three (Iron Man, Thor, and Steve Rogers, the original Captain America) back together and face to face. After everything that has gone on the past year, how could they ever trust each other again? I’m not sure but they will have to find out as a threat only their combined might can face is ready to tear apart the world. The issue hits stands on June 2nd, 2010.

Also out on June 2nd; DC Comics has Brightest Day #3, Dark Horse has Serenity: Float Out, and Image Comics has Invincible #72. What will you be getting next week?

It is here, Marvel Comics’ AGE OF HEROES. And with it, the Marvel universe pulls out of the darkness that has held comics for the past few years and gets back to having true heroes. Today, both Age of Heroes #1 and Avengers #1 hit stands.

Age of Heroes launches the “Heroic Age” and spotlights life for some of Marvel’s biggest heroes.  With Norman Osborn defeated, the Avengers have one last foe to face for the public’s opinion, J. Jonah Jameson, the Mayor of NYC.  In Avengers #1, who will be apart of the new team? With Kang the Conqueror arriving from the future and ready to brawl, who will stop him? I’m assuming Ironman, Thor, Captain America, Wolverine, and Spider-Man are safe bets! 🙂

From DC Comics we have Brightest Day #2, what does it mean to the DCU, and The Legion of Super-Heroes #1, which relaunches DC’s heroes from the future. Image Comics has The Walking Dead #72 and Astounding Wolf-Man #23. Dark Horse has Emily the Strange: The 13th Hour #3. What will you be buying this week?

A new poster for Iron Man 2 has been released! The poster mimics the original’s final poster, but with the obvious additions of War Machine, Whiplash and Black Widow.
