I’m really excited that the Avengers will be assembling, it just sucks that we have to wait three years for it to happen.

Marvel has revealed that a new Avengers animated series is beginning production to coincide with the releases of their live actions films The First Avenger: Captain America and The Avengers. The show will be titled The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and will be produced by Marvel Animation.

The series will feature the same team that is rumored to be taking center stage in the film adaptation; Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Ant-Man, and the Wasp. The heroes are forced to come together “when the planet is threatened by super villains, time traveling conquerors, alien invaders, mythical monsters and mad robots bent on the total destruction of humanity”.

Also in production from Marvel Animated are Wolverine and the X-Men, Iron Man: Armored Adventures, Marvel Super Hero Squad, and The Black Panther.

Marvel Comics ThorSadly, Matthew Vaughn is off another Marvel comics film adaptation (the first of which was “X3”). Variety broke the news last night that Kenneth Branagh (Henry V, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein) is close to a deal with Marvel to direct the comic book Norse God’s first feature film.

Branagh, a director and actor, would be directing from a script by Mark Protosevich, which early reviews have praised as being the best comic book turned film script ever written. In Protosevich’s “Thor”, we follow a “disabled medical student Donald Blake, who has an alter ego as the hammer-wielding Norse god Thor.” Rumor has it that the film would be a fantasy epic, rather than a stright superhero film (like Marvel’s “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk” films this past summer).

While no actor has been attached to portray Thor, there have been rumors for months that Kevin McKidd (Journeyman, Rome) would be picking up the hammer. The film is expected to be released on June 4, 2010, which is a little over a month after “Iron Man 2” is supposed to hit theaters.

From “Iron Man” to “Master Mind”? Hollywood Insider is reporting that Robert Downey Jr is teaming up with Ben Stiller’s production company, Red Hour Films, and will be lending his voice to DreamWorks Animation’s “Master Mind”, a superhero spoof.

Downey Jr., who starred as the golden avenger Iron Man earlier this summer, would be joining the dark side for this new film where he portrays a “villain who loses his will to live after accidentally killing his archrival”. Tina Fey is rumored to be joining the film’s cast.

The film has an expected release date of November 5th, 2010. The IMDB lists Gary Trousdale (Atlantis: The Lost Empire) as the director, but multiple sites are reporting that Cameron Hood and Kyle Jefferson will now be helming the film. Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons wrote the screenplay, which will be both writer’s debut film.
