2 Broke Girls

After a disappointing second season, 2 Broke Girls has rebounded a bit. The show has found a good groove with Kat Dennings’ Max going to culinary school and all of the new characters that have come with it. This is something she (and the show) should have done before her and Caroline (Beth Behrs) opened a Cupcake Shop (the second season raced too far ahead too quickly). The supporting cast including Matthew Moy as Han, Garrett Morris as Earl, and Jonathan Kite as Oleg, all click and own their characters. The diner scenes are still the funniest and most enjoyable part of the series.

Official Episode Description, “And the Icing on the Cake”: When Deke invites Max’s friends over to his dumpster house, Caroline learns a big secret about his background.

I missed spotlighting a few shows this past weekend, notably Chuck, The Walking Dead, and Dexter. They are easily my three favorite shows currently on television and I hope that you were able to check them out.

Speaking about my favorite shows, my favorite new comedy of the season is 2 Broke Girls. The show reminds me of the classic sitcom Perfect Strangers but with a modern twist and a gender reversal. The cast is both likable and entertaining. They don’t wear kids gloves or hold back to what is politically correct, which is refreshing for a change. The show airs on CBS at 8:30pm after How I Met Your Mother. Here is tonight’s official description: Max and Caroline take an apartment-cleaning job to make extra cash, not realizing it’s the apartment of a hoarder; and Max learns that Johnny is keeping a secret from her.

I have a feeling that this film might be one of those situations where you either like the book and not the movie, or vice versa. Or maybe it’s more what you saw or read first. Either way, I really enjoyed the book, but don’t have high hopes for the film. While Kat Dennings is an inspired choice for Norah, I just don’t see Michael Cera as Nick. To be honest, he’s just not cool enough.

There are certain parts of the trailer that are lifted right from the book, such as when Nick’s friends take Caroline off Nick and Norah’s hands, but mostly it looks like a lot of changes. For one, it’s Norah that asks Nick to be her “boyfriend for 5 minutes” rather than the other way around as in the book, and it leads me to wonder why. Also, the subplot with losing Caroline seems completely unnecessary.

The book has such a rushed, immediate, living-one-moment-to-the-next tone to it that it seems impossible to translate to film. If anything, though, it looks like it’ll at least have an awesome soundtrack.
