What is going on in the world of entertainment? Follow me into The Pit…

  • Next month’s Fantastic Four #587 will see the end of the first family of superheroes, the series, and will take at least one of the team’s lives. Which member will take their last breath, Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, or the Thing? My money is on the Human Torch. Place your bets below, then come back next month as we take a closer look at which hero bites the dust.
  • ?It is great to hear Kevin Smith talk about his upcoming (and unconventional) horror film Red State. The passion he is putting into the project is really shining through. And I’m glad that he is back to making something he cares about after the dreadfully boring Cop Out and the letdown that was Zack and Miri. I just wish the trailer for Red State was better. It doesn’t give me a lot of hope for the overall piece.
  • It was announced that the Playboy founder Hugh Hefner will be marrying Crystal Harris, a 24 year old Playmate. Apparently he popped the question over the Holidays. I have to ask… why? I mean, seriously, why? Does the 84 year old feel the need to settle down? Did the twins he was dating earlier in the year tire him out that much?
  • We still have another three weeks until Chuck‘s return. In the meanwhile I’ll continue watching all of my favorite 80s action movies. Up next… Die Hard.
  • The movie making simulation Hollywood the Game is gearing up for a new year of movies and session 10 of its popular television simulation. Check out the site and sign up if you are interesting in playing. Head on over to HollywoodtheGame.com
  • True Grit is the best movie of the year. Yeah, I said it. Now go see it if you don’t believe me.
  • Own a car? Than you really should have automobile insurnace. Yeah, I know this has nothing to do with entertainment and it contains a spelling error. Oh well. Can’t win them all.

Tonight, Kevin Smith will have a live Q&A with fans and will be screening his new comedy “Too Fat for 40” on EPIX. You already know who Kevin Smith is, but do you know what EPIX is? It is a joint venture by Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM, and is an online database of movies and original programming. They are trying to merge the experience of a cable TV channel, a VOD series and an online source for movies. some of their current movies include recent movies Ironman, Star Trek, Gamer, and Brothers, classic films including Teen Wolf and Stargate, along with Kevin Smith’s new special, they recently added Louis C.K.’s Hilarious.

EPIX has released two new clips from the special. In the first clip, Kevin Smith talks about working with Seth Rogen and a special request that the actor made to him on the set on Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

In the next clip Kevin Smith talks about Cop Out and shares a story with Bruce Willis.

You can score a two week free trial to EPIX by heading here.

Earlier this week Phasekitty and I were invited to the SmodCastle to preview Kevin Smith’s upcoming EPIX comedy special Too Fat for 40 and to sit down for a Q&A with the man himself. According to Smith, when EPIX approached him with the idea of a comedy special, he jumped at the chance to be like George Carlin for a day and put on his own comedy special. Here is a short clip from special:

If you have seen any of the Evening with Kevin Smith DVDs, than you know the basic drill, Kevin Smith gets up in front of a large live audience to answer their questions and shoot the shit. One thing that sets apart this special from those DVDs is the fact that he spends the whole special answering the first audience member’s question. That is a two hour response to a basic Q&A question with as many tangents and side stories as humanly possible.

Smith knows how to talk to an audience and he isn’t afraid to split very personal details about himself, his family, friends, and people he has worked with. One thing that really struck me about the 20 minute preview of the special is how much new content was apart of it. I’ve seen Smith talk more times that I can count, trekking out to his appearances at Wonder Con and Comic Con over the years and I own all of his Evening With DVDs. He usually repeats his stories pretty often. It has been two years since his last DVD (Kevin Smith: Sold Out – A Threevening with Kevin Smith) and he has a lot of new stories that have been building, including a lot of nuggets about the production of Cop Out with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan.

Too Fat for 40 premieres on EPIX this coming Saturday, October 23rd. Before the comedy special, EPIX is holding a free hour long live interactive Q&A with Kevin Smith. Visitors to the site can submit questions to Smith in real time. For a free two week trial membership of EPIX, head on over here. In addition to the special, on EPIX you can check out hundreds of movies online, included in the mix are Star Trek, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Madea Goes to Jail, and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra to name a few.

As we already know, Kevin Smith is awesome, but you know what else is really awesome? Free sh*t! Add them together and you have our new contest. We are giving away a few copies of…

ks_shootinshit

The official description:

Collecting some of the finest moments of Smith’s freewheeling conversations with his friend and producer Scott Mosier (as heard on their top-rated podcast, known as SModcast), this brand new book exposes more of the inner workings of Smith’s wonderfully weird mind.

Discover the genesis of Stalin’s Monkey Soldier army, the horrifying tale of Kevin vs. Steak Tartare, how to make bukkake eggs, the lengths to which Jason Mewes would go for a free comic, and how Kevin was once willing to let Alanis Morissette get mugged…

Lewd, crude and hilariously rude, these are just a few examples of the riches to be found within! Also featuring guest conversationalists Walt Flanagan and Bryan Johnson, fellow filmmaker and failed Canadian Malcolm Ingram, and even contributions from his wife Jen and daughter Harley, these are the humorous highs and cultural lows of Kevin Smith’s verbal diarrhoea…and he can’t wait to unload on you.

Now, how do you win your copy of Shootin’ the Sh*t with Kevin Smith: The Best of Smodcast?  Simply leave a comment on this article and let us know who your favorite Kevin Smith created character is! Is it Dante or Randal? Holden McNeil? Banky Edwards? Brodie? Jay or Silent Bob?

Also, to get a double entry into the contest, let us know your favorite Kevin Smith related story! It could be from the Smodcast, An Evening with Kevin Smith or one of his many Comic Con appearances. Three winners will be chosen on September 25th, 2009!

Kevin Smith Rules

Kevin Smith is awesome. Okay, so you already know that.  I’m not a big fan of Twitter, but Smith has had me hooked into it for the last 24 hours as he has been non-stop Q&A Tweeting over @ThatKevinSmith.  While his 24 hour marathon is coming to a close, you can still back read his hysterical answers and comments. If you’ve never seen him speak in person, this might be the closest thing possible to it. Here are a few select Tweets…

Via @Nick_Sydney “Would you rather have Thor’s hammer or Darth Maul’s double sided lightsabre.” Neither: Hal’s Oan power ring.

Via @BobaFett_ “Who would win in fist fight UFC style between Gary Coleman&that Webster kid?” Winner: bike shop perv Arnold blew whistle on.

Via @figgerella07 “what gave u the idea to tweet 24hrs straight?” Just wondered if I could. With a hair over six hours to go, answer is yes.

Via @abczoomom “Any idea how many tweets so far?” Nearly seven hundred. S’not the quantity but the quality. Some quality Tweets in there.

Kevin Smith is stepping away from the indie scene to direct A Couple of Dicks for Warner Brothers with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan starring.  The script was written by Robb and Marc Cullen, and marks the first time that Smith will be directing a feature film from a script he didn’t write. Last year, he directed the pilot episode of Reaper for the CW from someone’s elses script.  I’m glad to see Smith expanding his horizon and trying some new stuff.

Dicks features Willis and Morgan as a pair of LAPD detectives who are trying to locate a mint-condition baseball card that was stolen.  The studio is aiming for a January 29th, 2010 release.

Writer/director Kevin Smith returns to comics with Batman: Cacophony, a three issue limited series that focuses on the Dark Knight.  Smith is no stranger to comics with critically acclaimed runs on Daredevil and Green Arrow, but the talented writer is also known for long delays between issues (Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil that Men Do and Daredevil/Bullseye: The Target are prime examples). With Cacophony being only three issues, I don’t think we’ll have the delay problem here.

The issue hits stands next week on November 11th, with art by Walt J. Flanagan and Sandra Hope. Here is DC Comic’s official description:  Best-selling comic book writer/director Kevin Smith steps into Gotham City to write this 3-part miniseries event! Practically from out of nowhere, the mysterious masked killer known as Onomatopoeia returns and sets his sights – and sounds – against The Caped Crusader!
