From the forces that brought the world LOST, Supernatural, and Iron Man; JJ Abrams, Eric Kripke, and Jon Faverau, comes this new high concept television series set in the near future in a world where all forms of electrical energy have been wiped out in what has been dubbed “the blackout.” The show follows the adventures of The Mathesons’, a uncle, niece, and nephew combination, along with their friends, as they struggle to come to gripes in a world where the government we know is gone and a harsh miltia, known as the Monroe Republic, has taken over the region that was once Chicago and its suburbs.

What can I say about Revolution? Out of all the pilots that I have seen for the upcoming fall season, this is the show that shows the most potential out of the lot. With a great concept and a great creator (Eric Kripke) behind it, I have faith that the show is going to get better as it goes. Though this episode was plagued with having to set up a lot, I will say that it does lay the groundwork amicably and succeeds where so many other high concept shows have failed. However, this pilot was not as good as LOST‘s pilot nor should it be compared to that show. Though planes may have come falling out the sky in this pilot, as in LOST, the mysterious and mystic levels of mystery aren’t as captivating as LOST‘s and that’s where it is faulted. Like FlashForward, ABC’s failed attempt at doing “LOST 2.0″, the pilot cops out with a few cliche mysteries that come up from having this type of concept as your show and well, a few of them are evidenced in the trailer.

In fact, the one problem of the trailer, is that it ruined a few of the big moments that this pilot had. Firstly, the reveal at the end of the trailer is the same reveal as the end of the pilot and well, that was a huge bummer. Had that moment been kept secret, the pilot would feel a little more amped up. Secondly, the promotional imagery, the one on the stairs ruins another one of the big twists, that comes very early on in the pilot, which, again, is another huge bummer. But lastly, unlike LOST, the show does not set up enough characters for me to feel like they have a lot of stories going, now I know going forward there’s going to be new characters thrown into the mix (Daniella Alonso is a regular, but starts her work in episode 2 apparently) but I’m worried that right now, they’re going to heavily rely on the weaker mysteries to pass by some of the time. The pilot does tread into too much cliche at times but my gut tells me that they’re only doing that because of the world building that it needs to do, something I understand, and appreciate, though I hope it does not last that long.

Now, what I can say is that this show does show a lot of potential. Miles Matheson, the lead played by Billy Burke, has the potential to be a very solid male hero. He’s got the quiet demeanor to be a Dirty Harry like protagonist and Tracy Spirkados, who plays the female lead Charlie Matheson, also has some room to grow, but I think the character who could prove to be the most interesting is Zak Orth’s Aaron, he seems to be taking on a Hurley like role. I gotta admit, Hurley was one of my favorite Lost characters, and especially since Aaron is someone who, before the blackout, had quite a bit of dough. I’m a little worried that Giancarlo Esposito and Elizabeth Mitchell, two of my favorite actors, are going to be underused as the series goes as there characters seem very stereotypical and limited, so here’s hoping that with the series evolution that they’ll be given more screen time. Especially since it’s heavily implied that Mitchell’s character only appears in flashbacks (but my gut tells me a twist is due sometime in the first 13 episodes).

All in all, I believe Revolution could fill the void that LOST left as I trust that Eric Kripke and company, as long as they stay true to there vision and avoid trying to be LOST‘s full on replacement. All it needs to do is give its supporting characters things to do that are of interest and depth and it could find itself not being the next series to enter the high concept ensemble graveyard alongside failed entries The Event and FlashForward. Give this show a gander as they could be onto something.

The pilot premieres on September 17th at 10pm on NBC.

Nothing is better to get a true geek than a good old TV Box Set. Sure, you can buy them shows that are still on the air like The Office, House, or 30 Rock, but personally I prefer shows that have finished their run, including these classics…

The Twilight Zone

The Complete Definitive Collection is a 28 disc set that includes all 156 episodes of Rod Serling’s mindbending sci-fi anthology series. In addition to the episodes are a ton of extras including video interviews with Richard Matheson, George Clayton Johnson, Earl Hamner Jr, videos of Rod Serling appearances on TV shows, music scores featuring Bernard Herrmann, Jerry Goldsmith, and Fred Steiner, audio commentaries from stars including Martin Landau, Don Rickles, Cliff Robertson, Jonathan Winters, Shelley Berman, Bill Mumy, Leonard Nimoy, and Mickey Rooney, along with a bunch of other stuff to bring you into the world of the Twilight Zone like never before. You can buy the set new for 146 bucks.

Lost

Earlier this year one of my favorite shows on television ended. The mystery of the Lost island was party solved and while it did not satisfy everyone, I was content. And I’m ready to watch the whole series again from the beginning with Lost: The Complete Collection. It has all six seasons on 38 discs along with 3 hours of never-before-seen bonus material along with a short film set in the post-final Lost universe that acts as a coda to the series and answers some questions that they never got to in the series. Well worth of the price tag of 149 bucks.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Easily my favorite show ever on television, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is also one of the best crafted series. If you like drama, comedy, horror, romance, vampires, werewolves, and monsters, than you’ll love this series. The show lasted for seven seasons and you can get them all with the The Complete Series DVD for 181 dollars or you can get the first season on EBay for as cheap as 8 bucks. A must have box set for any real geek.

Angel

If I have Buffy on this list, than I really need to include its spinoff about the vampire with a soul also. The show lasted for 5 seasons and was heavily inspired by film noir and crime movies. It was a much more adult themed series than Buffy, which dealt with the pains of growing up and finding one’s self. And of course it has all of the monsters and action that you’d expect from a series that focuses on a vampire. You can get the complete series collectors set for as cheap as 116 dollars or over on EBay you can get season 1 for 6.25, season 2 for 6 bucks, or season 4 for 5.50.

There are a ton of other classic television shows you can pick up complete sets for including Six Feet Under, Gilmore Girls, The A-Team, and The Sopranos to name a few.

I love the weekend. It gives me time to clear my head and get some writing done! A big thanks to all of our visitors, the site has been growing weekly and I hope that you enjoy our postings as much as we enjoy posting them. In terms of entertainment, I gotta say that I’ve been digging the new fall TV season. Some good new shows mixed in with some old favorites make for a good viewing.

  • Geocities may be long dead, but for those with fond memories of the goofy looking websites of the 90s, we now have The Geocities-izer! This genus website allows you to view what any website would look like if it was made in the 90s Geocities heyday. Sooo cool.
  • I love and miss Lost. I just saw the AWESOME new short film/coda on the sixth season DVD and Blu-ray, and thankfully we have other cool Lost related stuff to fill the missing gap, including this very cool fan art. It features all of our favorite characters drawn in an animated series style.
  • I was a bit swamped with work this week and missed New DVD Tuesday, but we really didn’t miss much. The only thing of note was Ridley Scott’s take on Robin Hood, which they should have just called “Gladiator 2″.  Did you pick up anything new? I’ve been getting used to watching older flicks I missed via Netflix Instant Queue.
  • My favorite Lois Lane, Teri Hatcher, is on her way to Smallville for a guest spot! In it she shall take of the role of Lois’ mom. I can’t wait to see her return to the world of Superman.
  • Randy Orton is the new WWE champion? When did that happen? A big thanks to our wrestling columnist Lucian who has been keeping track of all the going ons in WWE (and a bit of TNA info mixed in). Are you an old fan of wrestling that has been out of the mix for a while (like I have), than you should follow his wrestling recaps to see if WWE is worth checking out these days.

The Pit v3 Logo

Welcome to another edition of The Pit. Lots of stuff is happening in the world of entertainment, here is a sampling.

  • The good news? Damages (one of the best shows on TV) has been renewed for two more seasons! The bad news? It will only be shown on Direct TV. I’ll have to wait for DVD to see the new seasons. But on the plus side, I usually let Damages episodes build on Tivo and watch them back to back anyway.
  • EW has a first look at the Lost DVD short that focuses on Hurley and Ben’s time running the island after the finale. Check it out here. I can’t wait for the DVD box set and this short film. So excited for even just a little bit more of Lost!
  • OMFG! Lindsay Lohan begins her jail time today… Really, who the F cares? *rolls eyes*
  • In another eye rolling story, the talentless cast of Jersey Shore is threatening to strike days before they are supposed to begin shooting their third season. It looks like MTV is going to give them huge raises to stay on the show, instead of doing the smart thing and replacing them all. I can’t wait until the world gets past the “being an a-hole” makes you a celebrity phase.
  • Have you checked out A&E network’s The Glades? The new series follows Matt Passmore as Jim Longworth, a homicide detective from Chicago who relocates to the sleepy middle of nowhere town of Palm Glade, Florida. While it appears like a easy/low key job, murders begin popping which forces detective Longworth to prove his worth. If you missed it’s premiere, it has been added to 141tv’s Free Video Guide.
  • There is a new trailer for Resident Evil: Afterlife. This one gives us a better idea of the story and a ton of different versions of Milla. This movie is going to be so epic-ly bad that it will be awesome! Check out the film’s poster and first trailer here.

This is a guest post by Terry Billups

For years I’ve had to schedule my busy life around my favorite TV shows if I wanted to catch them. That is, until now. Thanks to cable tv specials and my DVR, I no longer have to plan everything around my favorite series. I can just set the device and forget about it, knowing that everything will be ready to go, just as soon as I am.

This really helped me out a lot during the 6 long seasons of ABC’s hit show “LOST”. I work third shift, so every Thursday morning I would rush home and try my best to figure out the powers of this mysterious island, before eventually nodding off to sleep.

The interactions between these characters gave off such a realistic look. It felt as if I was actually there on the island, going through these hardships along side the castaways. However, one of the most unforgettable episodes of the show was the season 5 finale.

Jack believed that if he were able to detonate a hydrogen bomb as close as possible to the island’s magnetic pocket, he could somehow erase all of the horrible things that had happened to himself and the other passengers of Oceanic flight 815. He believed that by detonating this bomb, the hatch would never be built, therefore himself and the other passengers on flight 815 would have never crashed on the island. Everybody would land safely in LA, having no recollection of ever being on this mysterious island.

ABC, Lost, Ben

The end has arrived.  I’m excited, worried, perplexed, elated, anxious, happpy, (etc/every emotion possible) about the Lost series finale. ABC starts the festivities at 7pm with 2 hours of series recap, then the finale starts at 9pm and goes on for two and a half hours. I’ll be signing off the Internet after this post, shutting off my phone, and will be watching the finale live. Come back with your thoughts, and after a few days and at least one rewatching, I will hopefully be able to post mine. Enjoy!
