War FlowersFrom the “Stars You Know, Movies You Don’t” category comes War Flowers, starring Christina Ricci in a historical war drama/romance. This flick is very different than the usual horror and sic-fi films that I watch online for free. It is great to see such a large variety of genres available via Snag Films.

Official Description: In this inspired story of tragedy, love and loss, WAR FLOWERS stars Christina Ricci, Tom Berenger, Jason Gedrick and Bren Foster. It’s North Carolina in 1863, and the Civil War is raging. Young mother Sarabeth Ellis (Ricci) and her precocious seven-year-old daughter Melody are struggling to survive the war on their farm. With the youngest lost to scarlet fever and her Confederate soldier husband away fighting the war, Sarabeth’s spirit is severely tested.

When a battle crosses family land and a Union soldier (Gedrick) is left wounded, she can’t abandon him to die—and an unlikely bond is forged between them in the midst of despair. As the war winds down, so does her hope for her husband’s safe return. Hungry and broken, they have endured as much as humanly possible. Then the promise of a new life—and new love—appears on the horizon.

Joining Ricci in the war drama are Jason Gedrick, Tom Berenger, Gabrielle Popa, and Bren Foster. The movie was written and directed by  Serge Rodnunsky and released in 2012.  Click here to watch the movie for free!

We are very excited to launch our all new Indie Film column, The 5Ws & How, aimed at increasing awareness of completed independent films and how you can see them by getting the most basic info that journalists look for (hence our movie journalists and reporters on the column’s banner).

First up we talked to Evan Bass, who wrote, produced, and acted in the independent thriller, The Eve.

TheEve-Still-Beach

Who?
The Eve stars Al Thompson (Scott), Miranda Noelle Wilson (Lacey), Maria DiDomenico (Jenn), Rick Estabrook (Joey), and is written by and also stars Evan Bass (Harry). It is deftly directed by Ritchie Steven Filippi in his directing feature film debut and released by Indie Rights.

TheEve_Harry

What?
The Eve is the story of a group of late-20-something friends who used to be close in college but have grown apart over the years since. They decide to reconnect by spending New Year’s Eve on Martha’s Vineyard at one of the group’s family’s house. Unfortunately, it is not as blissful a reunion as they would have liked and tensions take a turn and an unwanted presence turns celebrating the New Year into surviving the night. It is a mix of classic thriller with homages to past movies and small humorous nods to the genre throughout.

TheEve-Docks2

Where?
The film takes place on Martha’s Vineyard, of course, down a secluded dirt road at a house by the water. The Eve was shot on location in Martha’s Vineyard, and one subtle horror nod within the film is a scene filmed in Menemsha on the same dock that one of the original Jaws scenes was filmed.

TheEve-ModernHorrors1

When?
Like all indie filmmaking, The Eve took a while to go from initial filming to completion and distribution. Principal photography for the film was shot in January of 2011, with additional photography in April of that same year. The film was released on VOD in April of 2015.

TheEve-ModernHorrors3

Why?
With indie filmmaking there is always a many-fold reason for a project. For The Eve, we wanted to make a film that was different than the normal gore porn and late teens/early 20s frolicking on the beach type films, and make one with a little more character development. With that, we tried to focus on grounding the film in a reality that the viewer could believe is credible and would allow an audience member to be with the characters every step of the action. We also just wanted to make a film and do it justice. A lot of the crew and behind-the-scenes members working on this project stepped up a level to work on this production. For many, this was either a larger role in a feature or a challenge they were taking on — and we did film an entire feature in the middle of winter on an island whose weather changed by the hour.

TheEve-Joey

How?
The Eve can be seen on iTunes, Vudu, xBox Live, Playstation Networks, Amazon, Google Play, and YouTube Rentals. The movie will be further shopped around for distribution at this year’s AFM and more in-depth information can always be found at TheEveMovie.com.

Jack Frost 2 PosterWe try to take a look at a lot of lesser known movies that are available online to watch for free (legally of course!).

Today I took a look at the 2013 political crime thriller Dark Power. The movie has a bunch of familiar faces and a description that yells out “noir”; from the crime-ridden city to political assassinations to mothers with secrets, it has all of the foundation to be a great crime movie.

Official Description: Murder is the price you pay for power. When the mayor of a crime-ridden city and his opponent are both assassinated while seeking election, FBI agents John Archer (Sean Patrick Flannery) and Mila Driver (Kristanna Loken) reluctantly join forces to investigate the double murder—only to discover that City Hall holds more secrets than the identity of the killer.

Running out of people they can trust-even Agent Archer’s own mother (Morgan Fairchild) is harboring secrets- the duo realizes they are now the targets of a powerful criminal conspiracy, fueled by a shadowy “secret society”. Only the truth will stop the bloody mayhem.

Joining Sean Patrick Flannery, Kristanna Loken and Morgan Fairchild in Dark Power is Chris Carmack, Kevin Dobson, Richard Gleason, and James C Burns, from a script by Miguel Pagan and direction from John Milton Branton. Click here to watch the movie for free!

Jack Frost 2 PosterWhen it comes to cult horror movie villains, you can’t get much better than a mutant snowman. Jack Frost 2- Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman builds on the original Jack Frost and takes it to the next level. The mutant snowman follows the surviving leads of the original movie on a tropical vacation, and you guess it, chaos ensues. The special effects and deaths make this movie worth a watch. Just make sure you have a big bowl of popcorn and a couple of beers.

Official Description: Jack, the chiller killer is back and he’s mad as hell! When a laboratory experiment goes horrifically awry, the crystal killer is resurrected. This time around, Jack can’t be killed by fire, bullets, or even anti-freeze. With revenge on his mind, Jack sets out to finish off his nemesis, Sheriff Sam, who is vacationing on a Caribbean island that is about to become a Winter Terrorland!

Jack Frost 2- Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman stars Christopher Allport, Eileen Seeley, Chip Heller, Marsha Clark, Ray Cooney, Ian Abercrombie, and Scott MacDonald. It was written and directed by Michael Cooney, who also wrote and directed the original. Click here to watch the movie for free!

The Pit

It has been a while since we took a trip into The Pit and I can honestly say that I’ve missed writing the column. What started as a way to throw out some opinions on various news stories turned into a fun way to spotlight multiple topics without the need to do a full blown articles on any of the subjects. I can’t promise that I’ll be able to write this column daily, but I’m going to try to make it a weekly thing.

BatmanBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is getting closer and closer (the movie is only a little more than 6 months away!!!). New photos from the movie has been released online, you can check them out in a Gallery on the movie’s official website (the site also features the movie’s trailer and some other goodies).

A new rumor cropped up today via Heroic Hollywood that Warner Brothers is so trilled with Ben Affleck’s performance that they want even more Batman in the film and are working to make that happen. Personally I hope they don’t over do it. Sometimes, less is more. If the movie is working and Batman is the standout, keep it that way. Don’t try to force more of a good thing, just let it happen organically. Either way, I’ll be seeing  Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on opening night.

Wolverine

Unfortunately, Hugh Jackman is sticking to his story that Wolverine III will be his last movie as the beloved gruff X-Man. On the plus side, there is rumor has it that he has a role (or cameo) in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, so while Wolverine III might be his last ride as the hero, it will not be the only movie we have to look forward to with Jackman in the role.

Another awesome rumor is that we will see the return of Victor Creed, aka Sabretooth, in the new solo Wolverine outing. Creed was played by ex-wrestler Tyler Mane in X-Men, but recast with Liev Schreiber in the prequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Schreiber was easily the best part of a otherwise disappointing first Wolverine solo outing, but I’d welcome seeing him have another go at the villain. Hopefully the material in the new movie will be up to par (it better be if its the last time we’ll see Jackman as the Wolverine.

Ash in an Evil Dead Series

We are just a month and a half away from the premiere of Ash vs Evil Dead on STARZ! I can not wait to see Bruce Campbell return to the iconic role and face-off with a new crop of Deadites!

The series has a new official description: “Ash vs Evil Dead follows Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons –personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its “Evil” grip.” The show also has a new behind the scenes video, click here to watch the “First Look” for Ash vs Evil Dead.

Peter Parker Spiderman

Spiderman is rebooting again. This would get a giant eye-roll- but (and a BIG but here) the web crawler is rebooting into the Marvel Cinematic Universe! That is so epic-ly amazing (spectacular, sensational, astonishing, superior, etc.) that we can ignore the constant reboots (we would do the same and be equally excited if the Fantastic Four were inserted into the Marvel mothership movie universe). With Spiderman entering a new universe, maybe, just maybe we can have him face off with some new villains. We have speculated about Spiderman movie villains in the past (and even had some success, hello Rhino).

Here we go, our picks for possible villains in the Spiderman Reboot!

Spiderman Kingpin

Kingpin

Who is to say that the main villain of a Spiderman movie needs to be introduced in the new Spiderman movie? Lets skip that and use a villain already established in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (even if it was on the Netflix/TV side of things). Kingpin is one of the most iconic Spiderman villains and was masterfully played by Vincent D’Onofrio. He opens the door to grounding Spiderman but at the same time introducing a lot of possible characters (including a cameo or team-up with Daredevil). This would be a great way to tie together different portions of the Marvel Universe while firmly placing Spiderman in the center of things.

spidermanvillain-kraventhehunter

Kraven the Hunter

Okay, I know, this is a repeat of a pick from a past list of villains I wanted to see in a Spiderman sequel, but he is just too good not to use. This is not a villain that wants to destroy the world or take over the city. This is a hunter that wants to take out Spiderman and the two are pretty equally matched in strength and speed. What better test for a new teenage Peter Parker/Spiderman? Just imagine them fighting across Manhattan or battling in the Bronx Zoo. I love the idea of Spiderman fighting someone that isn’t straight up evil per say, but is an animal like villain. Kraven also has ties to other villains that could be included, like his half brother the Chameleon or Vermin.

Spiderman Morlun

Morlun

I was on the fence with this one. Merlin as a villain is either loved or loathed by Spiderman fans. The Other storyline added so much complication to Spiderman’s backstory and would deb so unneeded for a new series of movies, but at the same time he is a formidable big bad and could open a ton of new doors for future movies and characters; Ezekiel, Silk, and of course the possibility of doing a live action version of “Spider-Verse” (which could put Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield back into the suit!). I might be getting too ahead of myself, but I think there is a way to introduce Morlun without the over complications. I’d love to see some of the alternate world Spidermen (and women- Mayday Parker!).

Spiderman White Rabbit

White Rabbit

Okay, so this is a joke entry (sort of- Spiderman really needs more female villains). White Rabbit is the addition to this list that is similar to Rhino in my last Spiderman Movie Villains List, she wouldn’t be the headlining villain, but someone that Spiderman faces over the course of the movie. She could be robbing a bank or museum, etc. Spiderman’s world needs to be rich with costumed villains and the montages in the movie should reflect this. Hey, maybe they could throw in some established small villains from Agents of SHIELD, Daredevil, or past Marvel movies for Spiderman to punch over the course of the new film. I want to feel his connection to the bigger world (but I don’t necessarily want him over shadowed by Ironman or Captain America).

Who would you like to see Spiderman face off against in the new movie?
