Captain America, Free Comic

Marvel has released a prequel comic for their upcoming movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and you can read it online for free. Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier Infinite Comic #1 is written by Peter David with art by Rock-He Kim. In the book, Captain America works with S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Black Widow and Rumlow to stop a terrorist group from getting a mysterious weapon known as The Zodiac. Captain America isn’t quite sure who he can trust as he discovers that S.H.I.E.L.D is hiding sequels of their own about the weapon.

David had previously written the adaptation for Captain America: The First Avenger, so he is well versed with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Steve Rogers. According to Marvel, the new book will showcase a key part of Roger’s journey; “the evolution of his patriotic zeal, from the scrappy young man bent on joining the war effort to a more thoughtful leader ever mindful of his minders.”

Click here to check out the issue for free digitally. Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits theaters on April 4th, 2014.

Who would have thought that Myspace would still be good for anything? Not me for one. But if you head over to Dark Horse Comic’s Myspace page you are treated to dozens of free digital comics.

The one I’m going to look at right now is a special 4 part The Goon story. Part I is “The Big Blue Note” which was written and drawn by The Fillbach Brothers with colors by Wil Glass. Part II is “Bogged Down at Bush Street” by Rebecca Sugar and Frans Boukas. Part III is “A Reasonable Amount of Trouble” written by John Arcudi with art by Herb Trimpe and colors by Dan Jackson. Part IV is “Enter the Pecker” written and drawn by Bob Fingerman.

Read the free The Goon online comic book here. For those out of the know; The Goon, created by Eric Powell, is a pulp crime comic book mixed with violent/dark comedy elements and a paranormal twist- basically everything I love in a story.

The Goon has had a movie in development for a while with creator Eric Powell writing it and David Fincher producing it. They even got as far as showing test footage at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con. But sadly, there is no new movement on the animated feature. Here is hoping that it will move forward in the future.

We are only a couple months away from the milestone 100th issue of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead. If you have been to this site in the past, then you know that it is my favorite ongoing comic and while most titles get worse with age, The Walking Dead has consistently been an entertaining edge of your seat thrill ride and a character study of normal people coping with the end of the world. It spawned one of the best shows on television (and the highest rated Cable series ever), although as good as the show is, it does not hold a candle to the comic.

Now might be a good time to go back and reread the first issue of the series and thanks to Image Comics, you can legally read The Walking Dead issue 1 (and issue 49) online for free. If you are a fan of the television version of The Walking Dead, I highly (HIGHLY) recommend checking out the first issue and considering ordering the trades online. If you have never heard of The Walking Dead before reading this post, it is a comic series in which a Sheriff deputy and family man, Rick Grimes, wakes up from a coma in a hospital to discover that the world has been overrun by zombies.  Not knowing how long he was out cold, he must regain his strength and fight through hordes of the undead to find and protect his family. Along the way he runs into a lot of different survivors and finds out that some or much worse than the zombies.

I’m feeling nostalgic today, so I decided to use our original logo for “The Pit” column. I’d like to take a moment to thank our regular visitors for their continued support of the site and welcome new visitors.  As always, I’d love to hear your comments and opinions on articles and the news we post.

  • We have one more episode left of the first season of The Walking Dead and things have started to veer away from the comic book. Rick Grimes and the camp have changed route and have arrived at the CDC (Center for Disease Control). The preview for next week leads us to believe that they might find out something about the origin of the zombie outbreak (something we have never gotten in the series). It also looks like a certain character (*cough*Shane*cough*) might be sticking around a bit longer than he did in the comic.  If you are a fan of the show, but haven’t read the comic at all, than you should head over here, where you can read the first issue of The Walking Dead for free.
  • Showtime has renewed Dexter for a sixth season. I honestly didn’t know where the show would go in its current season after the powerful and shocking forth season, but with the additions of Julia Stiles as Lumen Ann Pierce, a survivor from a brutal kidnapping, and Jonny Lee Miller as Jordan Chase, a motivational speaker with a dark secret, this season has had an energy most shows in their fifth season can’t match. The show is just as creative as it has always been and they really know how to keep viewers on the edge of their seat. I really hope that Julia Stiles joins the regular cast next season.
  • Thankfully Chuck‘s ratings have bounced back with the latest episode, “Chuck vs the Leftovers“, but they aren’t nearly as good as the show deserves. Chuck is easily one of the most enjoyable and entertaining shows on television. The series has an incredible cast, with action, romance, drama, and of course comedy. I mean seriously, if you don’t watch Chuck, please leave a comment and tell me why…
  • I picked up Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 issue #39 late yesterday, and I’m sad to say (spoiler) that one of the best characters from the series is killed in Buffy’s final battle with Twilight. I really thought that they wouldn’t kill off someone so major, but I was wrong.

Final Destination Comic

Are you a fan of the Final Destination film series? Than you might dig this comic from New Line Cinema and Zenescope Entertainment.  Final Destination: Spring Break was a 5 issue mini series written by Mike Kalvoda with art by Lan Medina (issues 1 through 3) and Rodel Noora (issues 4 and 5).

The comic book doesn’t feature any characters from the movies, but is a stand alone story focuses on a few friends who are on Spring Break when “death” finds them. Here is the official description:

A group of college friends head to Cancun, Mexico for spring break but their partying is quickly cut short when a hotel fire and subsequent explosion kills hundreds of people. Only a terrifying premonition by Carly, one of the girls in the group, saves the lives of her and her friends. Shaken but unharmed, The group decides to stay in Mexico and make the best of their trip, but Carly knows deep down that grave danger lingers on the horizon and soon realizes that when you cheat death, it always comes back to collect.

The whole first issue has been put online (via Newsarama), click here to check it out! If you want to buy the trade, click on the link below (there are a few Final Destination novels also):
