Buffy Season 10, Issue 4

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 10 #4
Official Description: Getting help from Dracula seemed like a good idea, until he stole the Vampyr book—and Xander! Now Buffy, Spike, Dawn, Willow, and Giles must save Xander and retrieve the book before it’s too late. Dracula has already begun to study how the lack of magical rules can work in his favor… The team from Angel & Faith takes over Buffy! Executive produced by Joss Whedon! Nicholas Brendon (Xander) joins Season 10!

I love it when Buffy-verse cast members join the writing team for issues. Who better to get into Xander’s head then the actor that brought him to life for so many years. The team of Christos Gage and Rebekah Isaacs continue to impress. After a stellar “season” of Angel & Faith, it is great to see them steering the main ship. Was surprised to see the team reintroduce Dracula, but I’m intrigued by the direction they are taking with the “big bad” caliber villain who has never reached that status in either the Buffy TV series or comics. It would be great to see him as a real threat.

The issue will be published by Dark Horse Comics on June 18th, 2014 from writers Christos Gage & Nicholas Brendon, along with artist Rebekah Isaacs, and of course executive producer Joss Whedon.

Following Buffy the Vampire Season 10? Enjoying the reintroduction of the classic vampire?

I can’t wait to see where we go from last issue’s cliffhanger ending (spoilers) that saw someone or something in Gile’s body claiming to know a lot about resurrection. Whether this twist is a good or bad thing for Angel’s quest to revive the former watcher is anyone’s guess. More to talk about after the description…

Angel and Faith #17
Official Description:
Longtime nemesis Ethan Rayne has set the final piece of Giles’s soul practically in Angel’s lap. To complicate things further, the loss of a Slayer has sent Nadira and her group into the fray with their sights set on Angel now more than ever! Coincides with events in Buffy Season 9.

The last time we saw Gile’s friend turned foe was in Dark Horse Comic’ s Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 where he helped Buffy and seemingly died in the process. Could the villain have found a way to save himself through Gile’s corpse? It should be interesting to see how this plays out and even more so how it connections to the current storyline that is running through Buffy (spoilers– where Angel’s former love is face to face with Illyria).

The issue went on sale last week from Dark Horse Comics, but I’m a little backed up due to the Holiday (who isn’t?). The issue is from Christos Gage and artist Rebekah Isaacs and “executive producer” Joss Whedon.

Angel & Faith is well past the half way mark for the “season” and is still moving forward towards Angel’s ultimate goal of bringing Giles back to life. Recent appearances by Willow, Connor, and Gunn have helped to firmly keep the series in the Buffy/Angel verse while exploring past stories and ideas, such as the gang’s adventure in Quor-Toth. Over in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the title character recently faced off with Angel’s former foes Wolfram & Hart. I can’t wait until the two series’ come together and build towards the season’s ultimate climax.

Angel & Faith #16
Official Description: Angel’s plan to resurrect Giles inches ever closer toward success. As he and Faith hack their way toward one more magical item to help in their venture, Angel reveals it is time to get the final part of Giles’ soul. But their triumphant return to London holds more than one surprise: first, the revenge-seeking Nadira and the Slayers come calling…

The new issue, part 1 of “Death and Consequences”, hits stands on Wednesday, November 28th, 2012. Will you be picking it up?

This week Angel and Faith continue their journey into the hell dimension of Quor-Toth in part 3 of “Family Reunion” along with Willow and Connor. I really have to say that I love the dynamic between the group and even though I know that Willow is just passing through (and will have her own mini-series soon) and Connor is likely just going to make guest spot light appearances, I think this would make a pretty awesome “gang”. The shared history between the characters really shines through and they work off each other so well. Angel & Faith continues to be the stronger of the two Buffy universe titles and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Official Description: The expedition to Quor-Toth has taken an unplanned turn for Angel, Faith, Willow, and Connor. While they struggle to survive the horrors that surround them, they have also taken on a mission to stage a great escape — and not just for themselves! They must act fast– before the effect that this hell dimension is having on their thoughts and emotions overcomes them!

Follow the latest installment of Angel & Faith on Wednesday, August 29th, 2012. Written by Christos Gage with art by Rebekah Isaacs.

If you are anything like me, then you egarly wait for new issues of Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Season 9 has been different. Unexpected, but not completely fulfilling- yet I still run to the store when new issues are released.

Angel & Faith has been the better of the two titles, it has a clear focus and I feel like it is progressing towards something big. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 on the other hand, like Buffy herself, lacks a real focus. (mild spoilers) The pregnancy scare was intriguing and it was great to see Robin Wood again along with bits and pieces of his mother’s past. Yet the book took a detour that I wouldn’t describe as good and opened up a lot of plot holes which I doubt will ever get filled. And am I the only one who doesn’t enjoy Spike’s alien ship with giant bugs? I hated the giant psychic fish at IDW, but these guys (save for a few very funny one liners) are just as bad and useless.

Anyhow, previews for both title’s issue 10:

ANGEL & FAITH #10 (above left, cover by Rebekah Isaacs)
Angel and Faith are forced into battle, less by choice and more by circumstance, when two mysterious women from Giles’s past call on the unlikely duo for help. But that’s only the beginning of Angel and Faith’s troubles as the ladies settle in for the night! Series writer Christos Gage (Avengers Academy) and guest artist Chris Samnee (Thor), the creative team of Vertigo’s Area 10, reveal more about Giles’s past and further Angel’s quest in bringing the Watcher back from the dead! Samnee and Gage reunite!

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON 9 #10 (above right, cover by Georges Jeanty)
While Buffy is undertaking an away mission with Spike and Andrew, the SFPD is starting to really feel the effect of the rapid zompire population growth . . . With Buffy out of town, as the only Scoobies in the vicinity, Xander and Dawn have been approached for guidance. Buffy needs to get herself back together and home to SF quick, but facing Slayer Simone and her unexpected ally is going to make it a rough job! Zompires attack the SFPD! Executive produced by Joss Whedon!

Angel & Faith hits stands on May 30th, while the new issue of Buffy comes out on June 13th.

Next Wednesday, August 31st Buffy the Vampire Slayer “season 9” begins with Angel & Faith #1 from Dark Horse Comics. The once rouge slayer will be teaming up with the vampire with a soul for a new 25 issue series that will see them move to England and continue their own personal fights for redemption.  On to the official description for issues number one:

Left in a near-catatonic state following the events in Buffy Season 8, Angel will need a seriously rude awakening if he’s to make amends for his ill-conceived deeds. Enter rebel Slayer with a cause–Faith Lehane. Together they’ll have full access to the Watcher files and opportunities to make amends for all they’ve done . . . and will do.

The issue is written by Christos Gage with interior art by Rebekah Isaacs, and overseen by Buffy creator Joss Whedon. I can’t wait for the new issue and to see how it will tie in with the new season of Buffy comics.

Also from Dark Horse Comics next week is The Goon #35. The official description of the issue:

Goon and Franky stumble upon a bizarre freak show at Brigadoon’s Dreamland Carnival, where the evil barker pits the Goon against a horrendous, bacon-eating behemoth, the Ten-in-One!

The Goon creator/artist Eric Powell is joined by writer Evan Dorkin. While I’m not familar with Dorkin’s work, I absolutely love Powell’s Goon artwork. You can pick up both issues next Wednesday.

Thanks to Wonder Con we have a bit more information on the next “seasons” of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel in comic book format along with some cool images. Lets start with the two teaser images:

Now, on to the actual info. Buffy will be titled “Season 9” while Angel will be “Angel and Faith”, and both will last for 25 issues. Angel will be kicking off first in late August with Buffy following in September. I’m assuming this is to allow the last issue of the new season to be in Buffy with the books crossing over. Hopefully we’ll see a lot of connections throughout the run.  Earlier in the year Dark Horse announced that Buffy would continue after Season 9 into a 10th season.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 will be co-written by Joss Whedon and Andrew Chambliss, one of Whedon’s Dollhouse writers. The season continues off the final issue of Season 8 (SPOILERS) which sees Buffy and the gang, including Willow, Xander, Dawn, and Spike residing in San Fransisco. Thankfully, Georges Jeanty will be returning to draw the series after handling the art in Season 8. His style is clean and works well for the Scooby Gang.

Angel and Faith will be written by Christos Gage while being overseen by Whedon with art by Rebekah Isaacs. I’m not familiar with Gage’s work, but I like what he says about the upcoming season. He describes it as a “supernatural noir” title, much like how Angel the series was in its earlier seasons. The new series sees the title characters living in Gile’s home in London. No other Angel characters have been confirmed for the series, but I have to imagine that we’ll see some surviving characters like Connor at some point. I have tried very hard to ignore the horrible Angel run over at IDW, so I hope the new season at Dark Horse can shed some light on the fate of other Angel characters like Gunn and Illyria.

I’m counting the days until the new seasons of both Buffy and Angel. I’m really excited that they are both under the same roof again and that Joss will be able to bring the characters together with no conflicts. I just hope the books are interconnected. We shall see.
