Last week DC Comics revealed the shocking news that they were rebooting the whole DC Universe of books, renumbering them all to #1 (including the two longest running titles out there Action Comics and Detective Comics), and they will be releasing the print issues and digital issues on the same date.

While I hate the idea of restarting continuity (or rewinding it? It is really unsure at this point exactly what they are doing), it could lead to some good storytelling as Marvel Comic’s Spider-Man “Brand New Day” did as it rewrote years of history.  DC has slowly started to reveal the new creative teams for some of their most popular characters. Today I want to focus on the Dark Knight…

Detective Comics #1 (above right)
Writer/Artist: Tony Daniel
Official Description: Marking the first time Batman will appear in a debut issue of Detective Comics, the series will find Bruce Wayne on the trail of a dangerous serial killer known only as the Gotham Ripper.

Batman and Robin #1 (above left)
Writer: Peter Tomasi
Artist: Pat Gleason
Official Descriotion: …will explore the family dynamic of the Caped Crusader as Bruce Wayne battles the Gotham underworld with the help of his son, Damian, in the role of Robin.

Batman: The Dark Knight #1 (above left)
Writer/Artist: David Finch
Official Description: A twisted adventure that pulls Bruce Wayne deep into the halls of the famed Arkham Asylum, a jail for Gotham City’s most dangerous and criminally deranged.

Batman #1 (above right)
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Greg Capullo
Official Description: In the series, Bruce Wayne once again becomes the only character taking on the Batman name.

What do you think about the new run of Batman titles? Is it more of the same or are you excited about the creative teams that DC has put together? Do you like the idea of the whole DC Universe starting fresh or is it finally time to give up on them?

Batman and Robin issue 13 covers

Batman and Robin
#13 is the start of a new 3-part story from writer Grant Morrison and artist Frazer Irving. In the new issue, a man claiming to be Thomas Wayne appears and makes a stake for the Wayne empire. And without Bruce Wayne to prove him wrong, he just might get it. The issue also features the long-awaited return of a classic Batman villain (could it be the one on the cover getting beat with a crowbar by the new Robin?).

The concept for this new story is very intriguing and I’m really surprised that no one (to my knowledge at least) has gone with “impostor” Wayne parents in the past (if that is what he is). It is especially interesting that we get this story at a point when Bruce is removed from the title. How would he react? What if it really is Thomas Wayne? The issue hits stands Thursday July 8th from DC Comics.

I’ve been digging this change within the Batman books. Dick Greyson taking over the mantle of the bat seemed like it was a long time coming. I just wonder if it will last when Bruce Wayne returns or if he’ll just step right back into cowl. Over at Marvel Comics, Bucky took over being Captain America when Steve Rogers died. And now, even though the original Captain is back among the living, Marvel is keeping Bucky as the ongoing Captain America. Steve Rogers will have a new identity. Is this a good idea or a bad one? Did Marvel make the right move? What do you think DC Comics is going do to with Batman?

youngjustice

DC Comics has a new animated show coming to the Cartoon Network in the 2010-2011 season, based on the comic book Young Justice. The comic featured the adventures of Superboy, Robin, and Impulse, and along the way spotlighted a ton of the other young heroes, like Aqualad and Wonder Girl. From Cartoon Network’s press release:

Young Justice: In Young Justice, being a teenager means proving yourself over and over—to peers, parents, teachers, mentors and, ultimately, to yourself. But what if you’re not just a normal teenager? What if you’re a teenage super hero? Are you ready to join the ranks of the great heroes and prove you’re worthy of the Justice League? That’s exactly what the members of Young Justice—Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis—will found out, whether they have what it takes to be a proven hero. This all-new series is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and based upon characters from DC Comics. Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, Batman: The Brave and the Bold) is the executive producer. Brandon Vietti (Batman: Under the Red Hood, Superman Doomsday, The Batman) and Greg Weisman (Gargoyles, The Spectacular Spider-Man, W.I.T.C.H.) are the producers.

I wonder if the series will be more like the clasic Batman/Superman animated series, or the Cartoon Network’s current campy series, Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

It is the weekend! Party time! Excellent! *Strums out on guitar* Anyhow, I hope you’ve had a nice week. Enjoy this sampling of articles and news bits from around the web. Come Monday, we’ll have a new Book to Film Review, Trailer Impressions, TV Tonight and more!

  • Smarter than the average cartoon turned live action/CGI flick? (THR)
  • With the possibility of “Smallville” ending after this season, it is only natural for The CW to look into other heroes to adapt, but Robin? Seriously, why Robin? (TV)
  • What are the Top 10 movies that you won’t admit that you love? (Spike)
