I don’t really think that Sarah Michelle Gellar has been not getting work or anything. She’s had a kid! But at the same time, she’s been out of the spotlight for a good while now and I’m so glad that she’s finally got her own TV show again (Ringer on the CW). You’ve probably figured out by now that I was and am still a huge Buffy fan. I own all of the seasons on DVD and watch them every so often on a rainy Saturday. When I heard that she had her own show again, I knew that I was going to be watching.

I did my homework on it before the show premiered and while I was looking up more info for it online, I came across some Clear wireless Reviews. After I looked through it a little bit I decided to change over my apartment’s internet service to it.

I think that I’m really liking the show so far, even if it wasn’t starring Sarah Michelle Gellar I would really love it. It’s definitely staying on my DVR list.

Superman, Batman, Wolverine…bla bla bla. It’s about time that we heard it for the girls who keep the Earth spinning properly on its axis, in the face of campy-cruel villains and their danger. Television has provided a bountiful array of badass lady leaders and heroes. But where’s the restrospective on their heroic and female-positive ways that they deserve? We’ve noticed this dearth and seek to amend it with this article, chronicling our ten superheroines who make a rescue feel like a rock concert. Maybe they’re born with it, maybe it’s mayday-mania. But something about these power women makes us swoon.

1. Wonder Woman
Originally based on the prowess and indomitability of the Amazons, Wonder Woman has gone on to take up a position in our society as the emblem of feminism that kicks chauvinistic butt, and takes names. She’s been around since the 1940s, but vaulted to fame through the 1970s series starring Lynda Carter. Warner Bros. has announced plans to revamp the series for a modern audience.

2. Batgirl
Batman and Robin met their girlpower match with this battily beautiful figure. She first appeared in the comics in the mid-1960s, and Barbara Gordon charmingly embodied her character on the kistchy television series just a year after Batgirl’s comic debut. What’s the secret to her popularity? Perhaps its that combination of a not-a-girl-not-yet-a-woman vibe with some slick wings that bat away evildoers with ease.

3. The Bionic Woman
The Six Million Dollar Man, a hit superhero fantasy series of the ’60s, found its match in Lindsay Wagner, who brought a feel of “anything you can do, I can do better.” That affirmation held true, as Wagner eventually earned her own series as the beautiful Bionic woman. The show ran for only two seasons, but Wagner’s mechanical wrangling sensibilities successfully infiltrated the zeitgeist.

4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The nineties were all about two things. One was marveling at a certain president who could — gasp! — jam on the saxophone. The other was ogling over the brand of voluptuous grit harnessed by Sarah Michelle Gellar as she vanquished Dracula’s descendants on this hit cult fantasy series.

5. Claire the Cheerleader
Hayden Panettiere made a quantum lead into the higher echelons of celebrity with her invigorating performance as a rah-rah-sis-boom-bah girl who can conjure a new foot, nose, or hairdo as it’s needed. Her bravery was such a hit in our culture that “save the cheerleader” became the hottest catchphrase of the mid-2000s.

6. Kara Zor-El
Kara, aka Supergirl, is not Superman’s daughter, but rather his cousin. And what a crimefighting duo they have occasionally come together to make. The very fact that Supergirl exists is testament to the truth that all ladies know — there’s no way that near-omipotence should ever be restricted to the boys.

7. Stargirl
Currently portrayed by Courtney Whitmore on Smallville, Stargirl comes off like a melange of Supergirl and Sailor Moon. There’s nothing silly about her compunction against evil though — a great message for young girls, in that being pretty doesn’t mean being a pushover.

8. Electra Woman and Dynagirl
So… this wasn’t exactly the most successful superheroine series to ever air on television. In the shadow of Bionic Woman, this female duo couldn’t capitalize on the extra power-woman love and lasted only one mere season. Still, the pairing is remembered for being the sweet yet sock-it-to-em antidote to Batman and Robin.

9. Powerpuff Girls
There’s no way any superheroine listing of any real import could ignore the uber-cute sensation of this animated trio. Arguably more than any other figure on our list (besides Buffy and Bionic), these little girls showed how feminism and ferocity were ultimately irresistible.

10. Birds of Prey
Only a baker’s dozen’s worth of episodes resulted from television’s attempt to chronicle the prowess of these eagle-elegant ladies. Still, the Birds of Prey linger in memory ten years later, because their steely commitment to virtue consistently took flight.

I can’t even begin to describe just how angry I am about the just announced Buffy the Vampire Slayer remake. First lets take a look at the official press release:

Atlas Entertainment announced today it is rebooting the beloved franchise, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with Warner Bros. Pictures. Atlas’ Charles Roven and Steve Alexander will produce the feature film alongside Doug Davison and Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment (The Ring, How to Train Your Dragon, The Departed). Whit Anderson is writing the script.

Warner Bros. Pictures optioned the rights from creators Fran and Kaz Kuzui, and from Sandollar Productions (Sandy Gallin and Dolly Parton), for Atlas and Vertigo to produce. Buffy the Vampire Slayer first appeared as a film in 1992, subsequently becoming a cult hit and spawning the wildly popular television series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, among many others.

“Whit approached us with an exciting idea about how to update Buffy,” said Roven. “There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character’s return to the big screen. We’re thrilled to team up with Doug and Roy on a re-imagining of Buffy and the world she inhabits. Details of the film are being kept under wraps, but I can say while this is not your high school Buffy, she’ll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be.”

There is so much wrong with this news.  First, Joss Whedon is not involved with the remake. Joss is Buffy. Without him they should remove the name and try their own thing. Why in the world would they cut Joss out of the mix? He has stated for years that he’d love to bring a Buffy movie to theaters and both Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz have also said they’d reprise their roles for a theatrical version (others have also expressed interest as well, including James Marsters, Nicholas Brendon, and Anthony Head). That “active fan base” that is “eagerly awaiting this character’s return to the big screen” is not eagerly awaiting a remake. They want to see the Buffy they grew up with. They want to see the Buffy that defeated the Master, fell in love with a vampire with a soul, had the best friends anyone could ask for, found a father figure in Giles, that died saving the world (twice!), and that shared her power to make the world a safer place. They don’t want to see a carbon copy of her, because guess what, she WILL NOT BE as “witty, tough, and sexy” as our Buffy.

The new reboot is remaking the movie, so at least this horrible idea will not be able to feature Willow, Xander, Giles, Angel, Spike, Oz, Tara, and everyone else we fell in love with over the course of the series. Nor will it be able to be set in Sunnydale, a fictional city that truly was the heart of the show. Characters the movie can (and will likely) use? Luke Perry’s Pike, Donald Sutherland’s “watcher” Merrick, Rutger Hauer’s villainous vampire Lothos, and of course Paul Reubens’ one-armed vampire Amilyn. What were some of the other differences with the big screen Buffy? Well, the movie’s vampires didn’t “vamp out”, nor did they turn to dust, and one of Buffy’s super powers was cramps.

Let’s just point out exactly what this reboot is. This is two greedy SOBs named Fran and Kaz Kuzui, who are mislabeled in the press release as Buffy “creators” when they just own the rights, that are trying to milk the fan base of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer to make a quick buck and are trying to capitalize on the Twilight vampire “craze”. By rebooting the series they do not have to pay the true Buffy creator Joss Whedon, nor do they have to pay the cast from the TV series (I’d imagine both Gellar and Boreanaz would be pricey). They can hire someone like Whit Anderson, a background actress with no writing experience, at what is likely scale pay to write a crap script. They are going to push it right into production and try to get it into theaters as early as 2011. The director will likely be a straight-to-video hack or even more likely, a music video director who will be making his first feature.

As a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer who owns every season of the show (and spinoff Angel) on DVD, all of the comics that have been published, T-Shirts, video games, and yes, even the original movie, I will not be supporting this reboot in any way. I will not see it in theaters, nor will I buy it on Blu-Ray when it comes out. I will not be wasting any of my Netflix orders on it, or even wasting my time watching it when it comes to basic Cable. Fuck you Fran and Kaz Kuzui.

I will, however, continue to “eagerly await” the next issue of Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 comic book that comes out the first week of December.

What should my hollywood dream give away in a contest next

Summer is officially beginning and we are preping our first July contest and we’d like to hear from you guys! Please post a comment below with which item you’d like us to give away in our next contest. Thanks!

  • “Dead Until Dark” by Charlaine Harris. This novel is the first in the Sookie Stackhouse series that the hit HBO series True Blood is based on. If you are unfamilar with the series, it is based around a small town in Louisiana and how it is effected after vampires “come out of the coffin” and into the public eye after a synthetic blood is developed.
  • Face / Off on Blu-Ray.  My favorite John Woo film stars John Travolta as an FBI agent who must do the unthinkable to stop an evil terrorist’s plan, he must become him.  The disc contains a bunch of special features that you’ll never watch including commentaries by the director/writers, deleted scenes, an alternate ending, the trailer and more.
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer season one DVD. The classic vampire series by Joss Whedon focuses on the slayer (Sarah Michelle Gellar), one girl in all the world that is chosen to fight vampires and other demons.
  • “Intensity” by Dean Koontz. In this #1 New York Times bestseller, a “young woman staying as a guest in a Napa Valley farmhouse becomes trapped in a fight for survival with a self-proclaimed homicidal adventurer, and races to warn his next intended victim. Unrelentingly terrifying, this book lives up to its name.”
  • Bee Movie on Blu-Ray. This charming animated film is from the mind of Jerry Seinfeld and co-stars the voice of Renee Zellweger. The disc contains a bunch of features including storyboards, triva, commentaries, deleted scenes, and an alternate ending.

And last but not least…

  • Chicken Run on DVD. This stop motion animation from the creators of Wallace & Gromit stars the voices of Mel Gibson and Timothy Spall. Included in the special features is a “read-along” of the script.

So, which of these items would you like to see us give away? Don’t forget to vote in the comment section of this article!

No more remakes, leave Buffy and Aliens alone

Not once, but twice this week I’ve been pissed off so much that I haven’t felt like writing about movies or the movie business.  Earlier this week came a report that Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are working with Fran and Kaz Rubel on a remake/relaunch of Buffy the Vampire Slayer without the input of creator Joss Whedon. Now there is a report that Fox is going forward with a remake of Alien. Seriously, why?

I enjoyed the original Buffy movie, but was completely blown away by the television show. Like many fans, I’ve followed the characters I love into the comics and will continue to follow them into the future. A future we all hoped might include a feature film. Now we get word that a feature is in the works. A feature without Joss Whedon? Without Sarah Michelle Gellar? Without David Boreanaz? No James Marsters? Alyson Hannigan? Anthony Head?  Buffy is nothing without the world Joss created. If they want to go ahead and make a movie about a vampire slayer, than go ahead, why in the world would they want to piss off a fan base and call it Buffy the Vampire Slayer when it isn’t. Worse yet, when that movie tanks, it will hurt… or kill… our chances of ever seeing a REAL Buffy movie.

20th Century Fox, the franchise killer, is going to remake Alien. Ridley Scott’s original sci-fi horror film is near perfect and was followed by one of the best action sci-fi films of all time, James Cameron’s Aliens. Do they think they can top those two films?  Anything they come up with to remake this franchise will be a waste of time and as craptastic as Fox’s recent Alien vs Predator films. I really wish that Fox would stop wasting our time and stop pissing on beloved movies.

There have been a ton of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” related spin off proposals (a full list can be found here), but none of them came closer to happening than “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Animated Series”.  The series was going to follow the Scooby Gang back in high school (for the first time with Dawn), with most of the cast reprising their roles (sans Sarah Michelle Gellar), and most of the writing team on board to write episodes.  The idea seemed solid, but for unknown reasons it never made it to air. Now, almost four years later, the pilot presentation has been leaked online!  Watch it, have your friends watch it, with enough views or the right hype, maybe all this time later it will make it to air. Weirder things have happened.

For now, enjoy!
