Grant Morrison “killed” the original Batman, Bruce Wayne, and now he is bringing him back in “The Return of Bruce Wayne”.  The first issue of the six-part series hits stores next Wednesday, May 12th. Since the events of “Final Crisis”, Bruce Wayne has been displaced through time. This is his journey. Each issue features the cape crusader in a different era of time with a different artist giving each issue a distinct style. Issue #1 features art by Chris Sprouse.  Meet… “Caveman Batman”.

Other comics on sale Wednesday include:

  • Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis #1 from Marvel Comics. Warren Ellis continues his run with the X-Men, now pulled away from the main Marvel Universe.
  • The second issue of Dark Horse Comics’ sci-fi series Hellcyon comes out. The series reminds me of Avatar and is written and drawn by Lucas Marangon.
  • Image Comics has Savage Dragon #160 and Sam & Twitch: The Writer #1. Dragon sees the brutal end of the “Dragon Wars”, while Sam & Twitch is a new bi-weekly crime mini-series.

What will you be picking up this coming week?

Image United Issue 1

This Wednesday, the Image Comics founders bring us a comic so huge that they all came together to make it. Image United #1 features art by Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri and Jim Valentino, and was written by my favorite writer in the game, Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead).

In the issue, the heroes of Image Universe, including Savage Dragon, Spawn, Youngblood, Whichblade and others must by united to fight the greatest threat the world has ever seen.  According to Image, the “original Image Founders draw all the characters they made history with.” From the looks of the covers and preview images, the series looks slick. Check out six covers for the issue here.

Savage Dragon 145

Wow, it has been a very long time since I have checked out Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon. The Image Comic never held back and kept my interest for a while. I’m not sure why, but I dropped it over time and it never really did anything to get my interest back. Now, it would appear that Larsen is going back to basics and that issue #145 is the perfect jumping on point for new readers and a nice time for old readers to give the book another chance.

Image Comics’ official preview: “Back in Blue – Savage Dragon goes back to his roots! Nearly 12 years after walking off the job as a law enforcement officer Savage Dragon rejoins the Chicago Police Department. It’s a great jumping on point for new readers and old, and it helps pave the way for Image United. The Vicious Circle is reborn and Captain Frank Darling turns to the one man he knows can get the job done: The Dragon! It’s history in the making, boys and girls! This issue of Savage Dragon comes with our highest possible recommendation!”

The issue also features an appearence by President Barack Obama, whose appearence in Savage Dragon #137 pushed the book to a forth printing!
