Secret Origins 2

Three years into the DC Comics reboot and “The New 52”, we are finally getting answers to some lingering questions via the rebooted Secret Origins ongoing. In issue 1 we were (re)shown the origins for Superman, Supergirl, and the first Robin, Dick Grayson. The new issue, which came out yesterday, gives us a deeper look at the genesis of the Dark Knight. What differs from what has been established in the past? How will it impact the future of Bruce Wayne and his violent alter ego?

Secret Origins #2
Official Description: Batman headlines the second big issue of SECRET ORIGINS, which also features The New 52 origins of Aquaman and Starfire!

The comic hit stands yesterday from DC Comics, writers  Scott Lobdell, Ray Fawkes, Jeff Parker, and artists Paulo Siqueira, Sean Parsons, Paul Pelletier. Also out this week; Batman #31, Aquaman #31, and Batman Eternal #8.

What comics are in your pull box this week? Did you pick up the first issue of Secret Origins?

Superman 23.3, Batman Superman 3.1

It is no secret that I hate that DC Comics relaunched with the “New 52” with little regard to fans or the characters. I get wanting to do something new and big to attract a new audience, and it has been successful in that right. But there was a way they could have done it by taking their time and bringing out ongoing series to natural conclusions, instead of just ending everything abruptly with the “Flashpoint” crossover. Sure, some titles like Batman and Green Lantern kept going like nothing had changed, but character like Superman who were altered greatly did not have a satisfying end. And that is a shame. </rant>

That being said, DC Comics has actually been doing some interesting stuff, including this month’s “Forever Evil” and “Villains Month”, where every title has been taken over by a villain, showing us their place in the New 52, or like for Doomsday above, shedding new light on his 52 Origin. H’el is one of the few new Superman villains in recent years to catch my attention. A Krypton villain who is powerful and ruthless- like ow Zod used to be. I just might be intrigued enough to pick up these two titles. Maybe. We’ll see.

Superman #23.3
Official Description: After his last battle with Superman, H’el wakes up on Krypton years before it is destroyed! Can H’el manipulate the Science Counsel, soldiers and countless others including Jor-El, to save the planet? And what does it mean for the birth of Superman if he succeeds?

Batman/Superman #3.1
Official Description: Long before Superman fought the unstoppable monster known as Doomsday, the beast’s reputation for death and destruction haunted The Man of Steel’s home world of Krypton.

Superman #23.3 hit stores last week while Batman/Superman #3.1 comes out on Wednesday September 25th, 2013. Both from DC Comics. Superman is written by Scott Lobdell with art by  Dan Jurgens and Norm Rapmund. Batman/Superman is written by Greg Pak with art by Brett Booth.

Have you been following the New 52? What has stood out? What would you change?

I can’t believe it has almost been a year since DC Comics relaunched their whole line of comics with new number one issues, rewriting the history of characters and changing some to the very core. Personally, I don’t like what they did to Superman and his “family” of books. The character just doesn’t feel like the character I grew up reading. To celebrate “one year later” in the new DC Comics Universe, in September they are releasing all new number zero issues for their whole line of titles.

Today I’m just focusing on the Superman family of titles…

Action Comics #0 hits stands on September 5th, followed by Superboy #0 on September 12th, Supergirl #0 on September 19th, and lastly, Superman #0 on September 26th. Will you be checking them out?

I don’t fully know how I feel about DC Comics upcoming renumbering/reboot of their line. The fanboy in me that followed the DCU for years and years is disappointed, but with how bad things have gotten recently (which caused me to not bother picking up a DC title in months), I can see why they’d want to move forward and forget some of the recent past. A way to re-energize the line and fans with fresh material.

I’m just seriously disappointed by the cover to Superman #1 (below and to the right). The costume redesign looks goofy and the art is subpar. George Perez has done classic work in the past, but someone should have sent this horrible cover back and asked him to do something else. To give it another go and see how it would look. It seems lazy and lackluster for one of the books that should be at the top of DC’s line.

Action Comics #1 (above left)
Writer: Grant Morrison
Artists: Rags Morales & Rick Bryant
Official Description: The one and only Grant Morrison returns to Superman, joined by sensational artist Rags Morales (IDENTITY CRISIS), to bring you tales of The Man of Steel unlike any you’ve ever read! This extra-sized debut issue is the cornerstone of the entire DC Universe!

Superman #1 (above right)
Writer: George Perez
Artist: Jesus Merino
Official Description: The new adventures of Superman begin here! What is The Man of Steel’s startling new status quo? How does it affect Lois Lane and The Daily Planet? There’s no time for answers now, because Superman must stop a monstrous threat to Metropolis – one that he somehow is the cause of!

Superboy #1 (above left)
Writer: Scott Lobdell
Artist: RB Silva & Rob Lean
Official Description: They thought he was just an experiment – and a failed one at that! Grown from a combination of Kryptonian and human DNA, the clone was no more than a set of data to the scientists of Project N.O.W.H.E.R.E. But when the scope of his stunning powers was revealed, he became a deadly weapon! Now the question is: Can a clone develop a conscience?

Supergirl #1 (above right)
Writers: Michael Green & Mike Johnson
Artist: Mahmud Asrar
Official Description: Meet Supergirl. She’s got the unpredictable behavior of a teenager, the same powers as Superman – and none of his affection for the people of Earth. So don’t piss her off!
