Release Date: January 20, 2012
Studio: Sony, Screen Gems
Director: Måns Mårlind & Björn Stein (Shelter, Storm)
Starring: Kate Beckinsale, India Eisley, Michael Ealy, Kris Holden-Ried, and Stephen Rea.
Plot: [Underworld Awakening] brings a stunning new dimension to the epic battle between Vampires and Lycans, as the first film in the franchise to shoot in 3D.

Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrioress Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.

Thoughts: The Underworld series ranks right up there with the Resident Evil movie series in terms of guilty pleasures. It is awful, yet at the same time strangely addictive and entertaining. Plus, it’ll be great to see Kate Beckinsale return as the vampire who loves squeezing herself into skin tight leather and shooting guns with an endless supply of bullets. It hits theaters at the end of January. It is a little surprising that Scott Speedman’s Michael Corvin isn’t returning along with Beckinsale, but maybe that is just a little surprise that the action flick has in store. We’ll have to wait and see.

Rhys Ifans is the Lizard in Spiderman 4

Okay, I’ve been waiting since Rhys Ifans was announced as being the big bad in the new Spiderman flick to comment on it until his character was confirmed or at least leaked. Well, it looks like that time is here and Rhys Ifans will be portraying Dr. Curt Connors, aka the Lizard!

When they originally announced Spiderman 4 with Raimi and Maguire, I thought that the Lizard was going to face Spidy next. Then when things got all messy and Raimi left the project followed by Sony changing into a prequel/reboot with Marc Webb taking the helm I wasn’t sure. I was afraid they’d go the Green Goblin route again, or as rumors indicated, we’d see Venom again. Ugh. But now it seems that Webb is still moving forward with fresh stories by ignoring used villains and bringing the Lizard into the fold.

So, we have Andrew Garfield who just impressed me with his performance in The Social Network as Peter Parker. He is a good choice, but I’m still not sure if the 6 foot tall and mature looking actor can portray “puny” Parker in high school. Also leaving me unsure is why Emma Stone, who would make a picture perfect Mary Jane is actually portraying Gwen Stacy. I hate that Sony just feels like the characters are interchangeable when they are actually very different. I’m waiting on pins and needles as to who will take on the MJ, Harry, and Flash roles.

The Lizard vs Spiderman

Lets take a look at Curt Connors/Lizard. One of my favorite things about him is that he is actually a good guy. Connors is a surgeon who goes off to war to save the lives of wounded GIs. While there, he gets injured in a blast and loses his arm. Upon returning to the states he becomes obsessed with reptiles and how they can regrow their limbs. Studying them he is able to develop an experimental serum from reptilian DNA that he uses to try and regrow his arm. It works, but there is a side effect, Connors becomes a reptilian humanoid monster, The Lizard, and it puts his family’s lives in danger and everyone around him. The Lizard is usually portrayed as a mindless savage, but in different mediums he has had different levels of intellect. In Spiderman: The Animated Series the Lizard was just as smart as Connors and attempted to make a race of Lizard people, while in The Spectacular Spider-Man animated series he was portrayed as being purely animalistic.

Having the Lizard being mindless animal poses a problem for the film. It would mean no master plan or witty banter between Spiderman and the main villain. Having a monster that acts on instincts could lead to some amazing fights, but that could also create a story that really goes nowhere. What the Lizard needs is a cool counter part, someone like…

Kraven the Hunter is one of spiderman's most deadly villains

Kraven the Hunter

If we care about Curt Connors, we should want Spiderman to save and cure him rather than kill him. What we need is someone like Kraven the Hunter whose sole purpose is hunting down the lizard and making him part of his trophy room. Think of the three way fight over Manhattan and in the sewer systems. Could be epic. What do you think? Do you want to see someone like Kraven the Hunter added into the mix? Or how about someone else? Could the Kingpin try to harness the Lizard as a hitman? Or would JJJ try to use the Lizard to take out the Spider-menace? There are a lot of possibilities and I can’t wait to see what Webb comes up with.

Spierman 4 Mary Jane Will Be Back

It is official, Sony executive Todd Black spoke to the New York Post and confirmed that Kristen Dunst is signed on to return as Mary Jane in Spiderman 4.  For better or worse, Dunst will be returning. While I don’t think that she was the best original choice for the role, I am happy to see that the cast is staying constant in Raimi’s Spiderman universe. Nothing is more distracting for me as a viewer than having roles recast in film sequels. By the time I accept them in the role, the film is over and they have already been recast in the next one.

We’ve speculated about possible Spiderman 4 villains in the past, but now we have something to work with (well, not much actually).  Black told the Post, “We’re just coming up with who the villain’s going to be now. We’ll be shooting in New York again. Trust me, people will appreciate who we pick, because it’ll be a big part of New York.” What would be cooler than seeing the Vulture flying around and terrorizing New York City? Sure, that quote can apply to ANY Spiderman villain (Black knows that Spidy has been located in NY for his entire history, right?), but no one else would give the filmmakers a chance to show it in such a beautiful/soring way. I get chills just thinking about it.

What about you, who do you think Spiderman will be facing off against?

War Heroes Comic Book

Since “Watched” hit theaters early this past summer and made some nice coin, studios and producers have been fighting to get other Mark Millar created comic properties. His series “Kick-Ass” is currently in production for Marv Films and Plan B. Entertainment, with Matthew Vaughn directing and Nicolas Cage and Christopher Mintz-Plasse starring.  Rumors have been swirling that Millar is developing a “Wanted” sequel and that he might be in the running to write a new Superman film trilogy.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Sony and Michael De Luca (producer of “21”) will be bringing Mark Millar’s “War Heroes” to theaters. The series “centers on a U.S. military experimental program developed in light of dwindling enlistments and the expanding war on terrorism that gives ordinary soldiers superpowers. When a rogue group of the supersoldiers breaks off to form a criminal enterprise, one hero rises from their ranks to prevent catastrophic results.” The series was orignally pitched to Marvel Comics as the “Ultimates 3”, before turning into its own thing.  There is no word on whether Millar will be writing the script to the comic adaptation, or just producing with Tony Harris, the series’ artist.

The Lizard vs Spiderman

We can all have a collective sigh of relief, Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire have signed on to Spider-Man 4 and 5! With them on board, it’ll only be a matter of time before Kristen Dunst signs on the dotted line.  Bryce Dallas Howard is ready to go back to work as Gwen Stacey, and I think we can assume J.K. Simmons, Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi will be back to steal scenes. The only big question mark is who will Spider-man face in the film? Villains like Man-Wolf and Carnage have been set up in earlier films, but I doubt we’ll see either of them. Who would I like to see Spider-Man take on? Read on for my thoughts.
