It seems like every couple years we get an all new animated Spider-Man series. I grew up (and was introduced to the webslinger with Spider-Man: The Animated Series, and before I was born there was the very cheesy but loveable Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. In the years since Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man movie we’ve had a decent short lived CG animated series from MTV and The Spectacular Spider-Man. which was geared towards very young children. Now we’ll be getting an adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis’ long running Ultimate Spider-Man series for Disney XD.

Set in high school, the series was a fresh (and updated for the times) look at Spider-Man’s origin and early years. Villains were reintroduced, sometimes with a twist (Spider-Man’s father helped create Venom) and things were a lot more straight forward (Bendis did not have to worry about decades of continuity).  I’m actually surprised that the series hasn’t been brought to the small screen yet, and I think it is ripe for the screen. I skipped Spectacular, but I might just give this series a chance.

The official synopsis:

This animated series from Marvel follows Peter Parker who, as the storyline begins, has been Spider-Man for just one year. He’s fought villains, saved lives, but still has much to learn about being a super-hero. Now, Nick Fury gives Peter the chance to go to the next level — to train to be a real super-hero and become The Ultimate Spider-Man. But before he can do that, Peter will have to learn how to work with a team of fellow teenage super-heroes.

The series will be paired with The Mighty Avengers for a Marvel Comics hour of animated shows!

This past week, Ricky Gervais let it slip that he will be returning to The Office in the season’s final episode, reprising his role of David Brent from the original UK series. He appeared earlier this season in a blink and you’d miss it encounter with Steve Carell’s Michael Scott.  Also guest starring in the hour long season finale is Arrested Development‘s Will Arnett, who Gervais has spoken about wanting to get to fill Carell’s large shoes in the past. Could Arnett be joining the show full time for its 8th season? Or could they be distracting us with Arnett and are really just slipping Gervais into the role he knows so well? We will not know for sure until the end of the season. In the meantime we should just enjoy Carell’s final episodes (the last of which will be in the final week of April).

TV News Blurbs…

TNT has renewed Southland for ten more episodes. Ben McKenzie, Shawn Hatosy and Regina King are all returning for the show’s forth season. The network has also ordered ten episodes of a new crime drama, Perception, which stars Eric McCormack and Rachael Leigh Cook. In the new series, McCormack is an eccentric neuroscientist who uses his unique skills to help the FBI solve crimes.

NBC has finally announced the premiere of The Paul Reiser Show. The new show from the Mad About You star focuses on Reiser as a fictional version of himself as he struggles with life after having a successful TV series and tries to get along with a new group of “friends” – the parents of his kids and his wife’s friend’s husbands. The show shot their pilot in a park that is walking distance to my home, so I’m really interested to see how they used the location and I love supporting stuff that shoots nearby (shout out to Parks and Rec also!)

Phew, all of that writing (and news reporting) really makes me want to take a break. I think it is time that I take a vacation to a nice holiday park for the weekend. Don’t you need a break too?

So much going on in the world of TV, lets focus on some of that today!

  • Steven Spielberg’s upcoming TNT sci-fi series Falling Skies finally has a release date! It will launch with a 2 hour premiere on June 19 at 9pm, than ove into a regular Sunday 10pm timeslot. The new alien centered series stars TV vet Noah Wyle (ER). If it is half as good as Spielberg’s past sci-fi TV effort Taken, I’ll be tuning in.
  • TNT has also announced dates for the new seasons of its original programming. Men of a Certain Age with Ray Romano and the great Scott Bakula returns on June 1st at 10pm for the last 6 episodes of its second season. June 1st will also see the premiere of Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Saved by the Bell) legal series Franklin Bash. It will have a 10 episode first season. June 14th will see the launch of new seasons of both the Jason Lee starer Memphis Beat and the Jada Pinkett Smith hospital drama Hawthorne, where she is joined this season by singer/actor Marc Anthony. June 26th sees the return of crime series Leverage and July 11th is the start of new seasons of veteran shows The Closer and Rizoli & Isles.
  • I wonder who would play Charlie Sheen in a TV Movie about this rise/fall and “winning”? Sheen has endorsed Rob Lowe to take over for him on Two and a Half Men… he might make a good Charlie Sheen though. Hmmmm. Maybe Sheen could even finance the movie, he just filed a law suit against Warner Brothers for 100 million dollars. Dr. Evil style yo.
  • My Future Girlfriend, the new webseries from the creators of We Need Girlfriends finally has a release date! Ragtag Productions will release the first episode of the five episode sci-fi influenced series on April 1st! Hopefully we’ll get a teaser to post soon!
  • This past Monday House took on zombies in a dream sequence and back at Halloween we saw Community faced with a zombie like invasion, what other shows would you like to see the characters take on zombies in? How would members of The Office fare? I think the doctors at Grey’s would get eaten pretty quickly. Chuck and company would easily defend the Buy More from the undead. Sound off in the comments with what shows and characters you’d like to see face a zombie invasion!
  • Getting rid of an old computer? Don’t forget that you want to clear the information and recycle the electronics the right way, using a company like Round2.net .

The fall television season is in full swing! And with that comes more new shows that you can watch online.  Our friends at 141tv do all of the leg work in gathering the info for us, here are three new shows that you can check out online:

If you liked Bring It On, than you might dig this new CW Network series that is produced by Tom Welling. The series focuses on Marti Perkins (Aly Michalka) a pre-law student who loses her scholarship and is forced to try out for the university’s “legendary” cheerleader squad to get the scholarship that comes with a place on the team. Of course being on the team causes its own drama.

Check out the series here. After you give it a look, don’t forget to vote on it.

Also from the CW Network comes the newest version of Nikita (titled as such).  The very sexy Maggie Q takes on the lead role that finds the ex-super spy/assassin/all around badass on a run from the very people who trained her. The series costars Shane West, Tiffany Hines, Lyndsy Fonseca, Shane West, Aaron Stanford, and Melinda Clarke.

We’ll see how long this remake lasts. 90210 has done well for the network, but Melrose Place crashed and burned. Check it out here.

Last but not least we have a new cop show with a different spin. Based on the book series by Tess Gerritsen, Rizzoli & Isles stars Angie Harmon as detective Jane Rizzoli and Sasha Alexander as medical examiner Dr. Maura Isles, and together they solve crimes. The TNT series has already gotten a second season renewal. In addition to Harmon and Alexander, the series boasts a great supporting cast including Lorraine Bracco, Bruce McGill, and Chazz Palminteri.  You can check out episodes here.

With the fall season in full swing, what shows are you excited for? What new shows have you checked out?

Persons Unknown

Another summer week and what do we have to watch? Well, I really want to like Person’s Unknown, it has the potential to fill the void left by Lost ending. I love the Twilight Zone vibe the show gives off and stylistic-wise it works, plus the cast is not only likable, but is replaceable with a revolving door.  Just for me it has been a bit too slow. Most of the action has been around non-action. They drive away… They faint… They attack Asian men… Um, I need real action, real thrills. The third episode airs tonight at 10pm on NBC, I’ll still be watching, I just hope it gets better.

Also on tonight is the series final of Saving Grace. I never watched the TNT crime drama, but I thought I should note its end after three seasons. The first of the last two new episodes airs at 9pm with the final airing at 10pm.

Is there anything else to watch?

8PM

  • ABC: The Bachelorette (Reality)
  • FOX: Lie to Me (Drama)
  • ABCFAM: Secret Life of the American Teenager (Teen Drama)

9PM

  • FOX: The Good Guys (Crime Comedy)
  • NBC: Last Comic Standing (Reality)
  • FOOD: The Best Thing I Ever Ate (Cooking)
  • TLC: Cake Boss (Cooking)

10PM

  • ABC: True Beauty (Horrible Reality)
  • FOOD: Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (Cooking Docu)

The Pit v3 Logo

Lots of stuff is going on in the world of entertainment. The NBC late-night drama continues, shows are coming and going, and Avatar is finally being challenged at the box office. Welcome to The Pit.

  • The Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman post-apocalyptic thriller The Book of Eli managed to edge out James Cameron’s Avatar out of the top spot at the domestic box office on Friday  by about a million dollars. Can it beat it on Saturday and Sunday to take the weekend? Maybe.  I have a feeling that Avatar might keep the top spot thanks to the 3D and Imax showings.
  • Earlier this week it was announced that Peter Sarsgaard was in final talks to take on the villainous role of Dr. Hector Hammond, a villain that I never really cared about in the comics. He is a great actor, I just wonder where they are going to go with the character.  I’m still not sold on Blake Lively as Carol Ferris, she seems too young and just not suited for the role.  Today it was revealed that Mark Strong is up for the ultimate GL villain, Sinestro. That my friends, could be perfect casting.  Strong vs Ryan Reynold’s Hal Jordan in a space battle with two of the most powerful weapons in the universe? Badass.
  • Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock full on kissed at the Critics Choice Awards after they tied for Best Actress. Ewwwwww.

Moving on to TV, there have been lots of renewals, included in the mix is:

  • ABC: The Middle, Cougar Town, Modern Family
  • CBS: The Good Wife, NCIS: Los Angeles
  • Fox: Glee
  • Starz: Spartacus: Blood and Sand
  • TNT: Men of a Certain Age

What is really interesting about this is the second season pick-up for Spartacus: Blood and Sand, which hasn’t even started its first season. The show looks like a pretty cool cross between 300 and Gladiator and co-stars Lucy “Xena” Lawless.  If I got Starz, I’d totally watch it, but as it is I’ll have to wait for it to come on Netflix.  None of the other listed shows are really surprising, I love Glee and ABC’s new comedies have been doing good.  Modern Family is hysterical and has an awesome cast.  Men of a Certain Age hasn’t been killing in the ratings, but with the talent behind it I’m not surprised that it is continuing.

Leverage on TNT

Tonight at 9pm on TNT we have an all new episode of Leverage. The show is a high tech modern day Robin Hood. In tonight’s episode, the team has to put on a faux magic show in a ploy to take down a corrupt corporation that has been marketing tainted food.  In a summer of bad reality shows and shows I can’t even begin to describe (Shaq Vs…), I’m starving for some good dramas.

What else is on tonight?

8PM

  • ABC: Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (Gameshow)
  • FOX: Octomom: The Incredible Unseen Footage (this should be left unseen!)
  • NBC: America’s Got Talent (Reality Competition)

9PM

  • SYFY: Ghost Hunters (Reality Docu)
  • TBS: Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns (Comedy)

10PM

  • ABC: Primetime: Crime (News Showcase)
  • TNT: Dark Blue (Crime Drama)

The Pit, My Hollywood Dream Column

It has been a while since I posted The Pit and things have been pretty slow recently (with the TV season ending and are any films even shooting?). Here is a new and slightly beefy-er edition of The Pit. Enjoy!

  • It is official! Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni will both be returning for the 11th season of Law & Order: SVU. Unlike the other Law & Orders, I can’t imagine SVU without Hargitay and Meloni. Their characters and chemistry separate SVU from the Criminal Intent and the original L&O.
  • Awesome awesome awesome Lost news! We’ll be getting a full extra hour in the sixth (and final) season! The producers felt that they needed a little extra time to tell the whole story. I’m game for how ever much time they need.
  • The hip hop magazine Vibe will be closing its doors, according to the New York Times, and the recession is to blame. Or is it another sign of the print medium dying?
  • Will Dimension Films be remaking or franchising An American Werewolf in London? While I wouldn’t mind seeing another semi sequel like An American Werewold in Paris, I’d hate it if they just tried to remake the original.  Not only does it hold up well with time, but it’d be impossible to improve it, so what would be the point?
  • It has been a while since I’ve reported any 90210 news (and sadly it looks like neither Dylan nor Brandon will be coming back next season), Abercrombie and Fitch model Trevor Donovan has been cast as Teddy, a pretty boy tennis player and son of a movie star. Could he be the guy driving the car that witnessed Annie run over something in the season finale? We’ll find out on September 8th, when the second season of 90210 begins.
  • Speaking about casting, I really like the idea of Noah Wyle leading a group of soldiers and survivors against an unknown alien force in Steven Spielberg and TNT’s upcoming sci-fi series.  Between this and V, it looks like aliens are battling vampires for the entertainment monster spotlight.
