Lets take a look at some of the recent movie news in today’s Pit.

  • Another Tron sequel is a bit closer to happening as Disney has hired David DiGilio to pen the new entry into the classic sci-fi franchise. DiGilio’s past credits include the short lived Aaron Stanford TV series Traveler and the forgettable Paul Walker flick Eight Below. I hope that they move forward on another Tron as there is endless potential within the world set up in the original 80s film and further expanded on in Tron: Legacy. Next year we’ll have Tron Uprising, an animated television series that fills the gap between Tron and Legacy. I wonder how the animated series will help shape the new film entry.
  • Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is in talks to fill the army boots of tough guy Roadblock in John Chu’s upcoming sequel to the 2009 G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The film is expected to have a rather large cast turnaround and will feature a ton of new characters, while losing a few of the supporting players who were in the original. Channing Tatum is expected to return as Duke and I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a safe bet to return as Corba-Commander. The first one was bad, but in a very enjoyable way. It was a popcorn flick and did its job by being damn entertaining.
  • It looks like funny man Jim Carrey may pull back into his filmography and return to some of his most successful characters. While out promoting his new film Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Carrey dropped that he has been in talks for both a Bruce Almighty sequel and a Dumb & Dumber sequel. While I could care less about another Bruce Almighty (the memory of Evan Almighty still leaves a bad taste in my mouth), I would LOVE to see Carrey reprise Lloyd Christmas along with Jeff Daniels’ Harry Dunne. We don’t get comedies as funny as Dumb & Dumber anymore, maybe lightening could strike twice…
  • How about some more sequel news? Angelina Jolie might reprise her role as action hero Evelyn Salt in a sequel to Phillip Noyce’s 2010 flick Salt. Sony is bringing back the writer of the first film, Kurt Wimmer, to pen the sequel. It is unknown who would take over helming the picture as Noyce as publicly stated that he would not be directing the sequel.

Best Sound Editing
The difference between Sound Editing and Sound Mixing can be a difficult one, but in the most basic terms, sound editing analyzes the actual sounds of a film, such as the practical sound taken on set and the sound effects, while sound mixing looks at how well all the sounds are put together with the music and the dialogue.

Inception
Great action = great sound, and Nolan is great at technical awards.

Toy Story 3
Pixar is always a contender, but almost never a winner in this category. It was a crying shame that Wall-E didn’t take this award home with it (the entire movie was made out of sound effects!) and Toy Story 3 doesn’t boast nearly the amount of impressive sound as that one.

Tron: Legacy
Much like the original, the sound effects for this film makes the audience feel as though they’re in a video game, but unlike the original, there aren’t enough moments in the games or fleeing the master programmers to make this sound truly great.

True Grit
A shoot em up western would be a great contender here, but True Grit gets more out of its silences than it does out of its sound.

Unstoppable
The runaway train groans and grunts like a monster, completely personified by the sound effects in this film.

What Will Win:
Inception. It’s one of the biggest action movies of the year and the sound awards tend to favor these. But with a little luck, something could surprise and come through…

What Should Win:
Unstoppable. It’s definitely the underdog here since this is the film’s only nomination, but the sound effects escalate this movie from a simple, no brainer popcorn flick, to an enjoyable action film by making the runaway train it’s main character.

Hey everyone! Things have been a bit bumpy over the past few weeks. We’ve been taking on a lot of guest posts to fill the days. Thankfully we’ve had Lucian’s ongoing wrestling recaps that I hope you have all been enjoying. We’ll be posting Raw’s recap later today. He has been doing a great job following all of wrestling entertainment. Now, it is time for a new Pit!

  • A new cartoon based on Tron is coming to Disney XD! The series bridges the gap between the original film and Tron: Legacy. It has a damn impressive cast that includes Elijah Wood, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens, Nate Corddry, Lance Henriksen, and Bruce Boxleitner. It is being overseen by Tron: Legacy writer and Lost writer/producer Adam Horowitz. Word is that they are taking a very serious approach to the material and it will not be goofy or kiddie. I have yet to see Tron: Legacy, but after the holidays I’m planning a double feature of both flicks.
  • I’m not sure how I got through a whole Tron news tidbit without mentioning Jeff Bridges, but I guess I did. Anyhow, I had the pleasure of sitting down to watch Bridges step into a role originally played by John Wayne and I have to say that I was damn impressed. The Coen Brother’s True Grit is easily my favorite film of the year and I hope it gets some respect come Oscar time. If you are a fan of westerns, or hell, a fan of good movies in general, go see it when it comes out.
  • DC Comics has released a pretty cool teaser image for March’s Justice League of America #55 and the “Reign of Doomsday”. You can check it out here. I can’t wait to see DC Comic’s big guns take on the monster that killed Superman all those years ago.
  • Interested in making movies? How about casting your favorite stars in them? And releasing them into virtual theaters where they can become box office blockbusters? Well, you can do such that in Hollywood the Game. The Internet’s longest running Hollywood Simulation and Community Game.
  • PJ over at 141tv posted a very cool video he found online that spotlights all of the films released in 2010. You can check it out here, it is a pretty damn awesome video. Big props go out to the editor, G-Whiz Productions.
