With television coming back from its “winter break” lets take a look at some new television and webTV news.

Over at the Television Critics Association’s press tour this morning, FOX revealed that they renewed Bones for a ninth season. They implied but did not outright say that it would be the final season of the long running crime drama, I guess it depends on the rest of FOX’s future slate of shows. The series stars Emily Deschanel as doctor  Temperance “Bones” Brennan, a “socially inept” forensic anthropologist who uses her unique skill set to solve long cold cases along with her partner FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth, portrayed by Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s David Boreanaz.

Bones joins a bunch of other shows that the network has already renewed, including American Dad, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, The Simpsons, and The X Factor. The only show I actually care about on FOX at the moment is New Girl, which stars Emily’s sister Zooey. New Girl keeps getting better and funnier with every episode. Hopefully they announce a renewal soon.

Well it took longer than expected, but it looks like Prospect Park is pulling through with its revivals of canceled ABC Soaps One Life to Live and All My Children. News was leaked last month that the company had closed deals with the DGA and SAG/AFTRA. Now comes word that PP has hired Executive Producers on the shows,  Jennifer Pepperman on OLTL and Ginger Smith on AMC, both of whom worked on the shows in the past, and the two show’s creator Agnes Nixon has signed on as a consultant. A few AMC cast members have signed on to the show, including Lindsay Hartley, Vincent Irizarry and Debbi Morgan. Even more interesting is the new plan for airing the soaps. Both OLTL and AMC will be half an hour long and air four days a week on The Online Network, with recap shows every Friday. Production begins in Stanford, CT in February. Maybe we’ll start seeing episodes as soon as March? Keep your fingers crossed!

The series is described as a “sexy soap-opera-style drama” that follows three male friends, Owen (Al Thompson, “A Walk to Remember”), Sellars (Dorian Missick, “Southland”), and Vaughn (Ryan Vigilant, “Gossip Girl”), who are navigating the complex dating scene while dealing with the pressures and messiness of their careers and friendships. The series is set in and spotlights the beauty of Harlem. In the third episode, Owen encounters a mysterious new woman while Sellars learns some stuff about his wedding. Then in the forth episode Vaughn learns that the single life is not nearly as easy as expected.   Find out more over on the show’s Facebook page.

The funniest new show from last season returned last week with two episodes and it is airing its third episode of its second season tonight. The headliner of Fox’s newly minted Tuesday Comedy Block, it is by far the strongest of the shows. Featuring an excellent cast that includes standout weekly performances from Max Greenfield, Jake Johnson, and Zooey Deschanel, New Girl is a show that Fox deserves to be proud of. Judging by the preview for this week’s episode, I’m sure it will be another excellent episode, filled to the brim with well deserved laughs. It is a show that I make an effort to watch live on Tuesdays.

Official Description, “Fluffer”: Jess and Nick examine their friendship. Elsewhere, Schmidt hopes to impress an attractive Republican by pretending to be one of Mitt Romney’s sons.

The fall television season is in full swing and we have lots of casting news and the axe has fallen on the first new shows of the season. Read on…

Lets start with the breakout hit of the season, the Zooey Deschanel sitcom New Girl, after an awkward actor swap between the pilot and second episode — Lamorne Morris took over for Damon Wayans Jr who appeared in the pilot, but then his low rated series Happy Endings was surprisingly renewed which didn’t let him continue with New Girl. Not only has the series been picked up for a full season, but they just scored an awesome guest star, Zooey look-a-like Lizzy Caplan, who will be a love interest for Nick (Jake Johnson). She’ll be around for multiple episodes.

When 30 Rock returns (at some point midseason?) look for X-Men‘s Cyclops James Marsden to be appearing in at least one episode if not more. This might be the last season of the NBC comedy, with Alec Baldwin thinking about bowing out after the new season. Other announced guests for the new season include Denise Richards and Will Arnett (who might be pulling triple duty between this, his new series Up All Night, and the rumored return of Arrested Development in mini-series format).

NBC, who canceled the Playboy Club earlier, has now pulled the plug on their new comedy Free Agents, which starred Hank Azaria, Kathryn Hanh, and featured Buffy alum Anthony Head. Surprisingly the network ordered a full season for their struggling new comedy Whitney. With things not looking that promising with their new crop of shows, maybe NBC will go back on calling this season of Chuck its last? Maybe they will throw us fans a bone with a full season order (instead of just 13 episodes)? We can hope, can’t we?

Speaking about Chuck, if the casting of Mark Hamill and Carrie Anne-Moss in guest spots wasn’t cool enough, lets add comic book legend Stan Lee to the mix along with Community funny man Danny Pudi and White Collar‘s Tim DeKay. The new season begins in three weeks with a Halloween-themed episode.

New Releases 7 17 09, Harry Potter 6, 500 Days of Summer, Homecoming

This week sees three releases; the latest entry in the Harry Potter franchise, a quirky “anti-romance” with a top notch cast, and a college-aged Fatal Attraction.

Okay, so technically the sixth Harry Potter film hit theaters at midnight on Wednesday and has already pulled in more than 100 million dollars worldwide (God I hope it takes this year’s box office crown from Transformers 2). David Yates, who helmed the last journey through J.K. Rowling magical universe (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) returns for Half-Blood Prince along with all of the familiar faces along with the addition of Jim Broadbent as Professor Horace Slughorn. It is refreshing to see a series go this long with all of the key players firmly in place. While I have not read the books, I enjoyed the last film and I think that the Prisoner of Azkaban is a marvel of filmmaking. The trailer and posters for this entry of the series have been top notch and have made this non-reader excited about the new flick.

(500) Days of Summer looks awesome. Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are two of the most likable actors around, and together they make sparks. Gordon-Leavitt is a greeting-card writer who falls for a new colleague, Summer (Deschanel) on her first day of work. The move spans over the next 500 days of their relationship. The trailer is quirky and fun.

Last up we have Morgan J. Freeman’s Homecoming, starring The OC‘s Mischa Barton, the new 90210‘s Jessica Stroup, and Matt Long. The film is getting a limited release in New York and LA. Fatal Attraction meets Obsessed with college aged actors. What guy wouldn’t be lucky to have Barton and Stroup fighting over them?

What will you be seeing this weekend?
