Amazon has officially announced the start of development on Mass Effect, an Amazon Prime TV series based on BioWare video game franchise of the same name.
First teased back in 2021, the show will be in the hands of Daniel Casey who wrote the script for the ninth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise. He will write and executive produce alongside Karim Zreik and Avid Arad. Michael Gamble of the video game company EA, who owns the developer BioWare, will also executive produce.
The storyline of the game revolves around lead character Commander Shepard, a human solider trying to save the galaxy from a race of sentient machines know as the Reapers. It is unknown if the show will adapt the video game’s story or will be an original story. There was a deep lore written by the developer which could serve as the basis of a new story for the show.
This will mark the second time in recent years that Amazon adapts a hugely popular and successful video game series. They are coming off the incredible success of it’s adaptation of Bethesda’s Fallout series, which debuted to both critical acclaim and a ratings hit. They will be hoping to make it two out of two in the video game adaptations.
Personally I’m very excited for this as I’m huge fan of Mass Effect (see my Mass Effect Fan Cast). Amazon has shown to very faithful to the source material in a lot of their projects, whether it is Bosch, Reacher, Rings Of Power, and of course Fallout. So I’m very interested in seeing what route they decide to go. BioWare currently has the fifth Mass Effect game in production right now so it will be interesting to see whether we get both around the same time. Only time will tell what they have up their sleeve.
