CD Projekt RED finally revealed the first look at the highly anticipated The Witcher 4 with an incredible story trailer. The trailer confirms the rumored handover of the franchise from Geralt to Ciri as the main character for the new game. The games are a direct sequel to the books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. Most recently the books were adapted into a tv show by Netflix starring Henry Cavill as the titular character Geralt of Rivia.
The trilogy of games concluded with 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, so it has been nearly ten years since we had a Witcher game outside of the next gen update for Witcher 3. It was huge success both critically and financially. It concluded Geralt’s story brilliantly as well as hinting at the future. The Witcher 4 has some big shoes to fill if they are going to match the quality of the previous trilogy. CD Projekt RED will be hoping for a smoother opening than they had with Cyberpunk 2077, which needed a few updates before becoming a very popular game.
It’s going to be interesting to see the direction of the game with Ciri taking the lead role. It has been confirmed that Geralt will appear. I’m hoping we will be seeing new countries and locations in the Witcher universe. The games took place in the northern kingdoms as well as the Skellege Isles of the universe, so whether Ciri’s story will again be set in the same area or might we see some completely new areas? Fans will no doubt be very eager for new details, but will have to settle for the trailer. One thing is for sure, The Witcher is back!
