The Pit

The San Diego Comic Con has begun and with it we are being flooded with awesome geek news- from both the actual con and the lead up to it. Lets start with one of the biggest comic book movies that is currently in production…

Bishop - X-Men Days of Future PastBishop (Omar Sy- pictured to the left in costume) has been confirmed to appear in X-Men: Days of Future Past! The time traveling mutant has been rumored to be part of the cast, but we did not get confirmation until this past week. With Day of Future Past‘s story involving time travel, he was a good candidate for a role, especially when you consider the other notable time traveling mutant and fan favorite Cable, has had his parents killed off before he could be born (Scott Summers is his father and a clone of Jean Grey is his mother- but the real Jean Grey raised him in the future in someone else’s body… yeah, we don’t have to get into the specifics. Maybe it is a good thing that Bryan Singer choose Bishop instead of Cable). I just hope Bishop’s role is not a cameo.

Maria Hill

Lets stay on topic with some more Marvel Comics adaptation news. (SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!) Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD just keeps sounding better and better. First they got Joss Whedon on board to write and direct it. They put together an awesome writing/producing team of  Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon (Dollhouse, Dr. Horrible). Brought Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson back to life after his tragic Avengers death. Put together a damn good cast with Ming-Na Wen, J. August Richards, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet, and Elizabeth Henstridge. And now from the floor of the San Diego Comic Con and the show’s first public screening we have confirmation of the return of Agent Maria Hill (played by the wonderful Cobie Smulders). I am so excited for this show (premieres on September 24th). I just can not wait for the further adventures of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division.

The Walking Dead - Carl

The Walking Dead premiered a first look trailer for season 4 and my jaw is still on the floor. The footage might be spoiler-y or it could just be misleading. We’ll have to wait for the show to return on October 13th to really find out. You can watch it here. The trailer gives us a first look at Lawrence Gilliard Jr as a very (and I mean very) different Bob Stookey than the one we met in the comics, along with Tyreese in a scene that looks like it is ripped from the comics but in a different location, Michonne on a horse, Rick and Tyreese ready to trade blows, and a bunch of new faces (both alive and getting eaten). We can’t be sure if this was footage from the first episode back or the first few episodes, but it looks like when The Walking Dead returns, it will waste no time in jumping back into the action and racing forward. For better or worse, there was no sign of the Governor in the trailer… We’ll have to wait and see what he might be planning.

Keep checking back as we try to round of the most exciting news coming out of San Diego and we’ll be giving away another DVD this week. What movie? You’ll have to keep checking back to see!

It is that time again, get ready for another contest. This time, you have the chance to walk home with Bryan Singer’s adventure movie, Jack the Giant Slayer.

In the movie, giants are unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries and fight to reclaim the world as their own. A young man named Jack is forced to become a hero and to fight for his kingdom, friends and family, and the love of a brave princess. What chance does a teenager have against an army of giants?

Well, Jack might have a better chance at defeating them when you take control of the giant’s every move in the Jack the Giant Slayer app below! In addition to animated gifs that you control, there is a quiz that tests how brave you are (which could open a secret clip from the movie), and a Giant Soundboard which lets you play sound effects from the Giants which are featured in the movie (can you say, remix time?).

JACK THE GIANT SLAYER CONTEST

Now lets get to the contest and your chance to win the Jack the Giant Slayer Combo Pack (Blu-ray + DVD + Ultraviolet). The movie is based on the fairy tale “Jack and the Beanstalk”. Leave a comment telling us what other fairy tale you’d like to see made into an adventure movie and you will be entered into a random drawing to win the Blu-Ray! For a second entry into the contest, tweet about the contest with the hashtags #JackTheGiantSlayer and #MHD along with a link to myhollywooddream.com.

The contest is presented by Warner Brothers. The movie stars Nicholas Hoult, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, and Eleanor Tomlinson. If you don’t win the contest, you can buy Jack the Giant Slayer on Blu-Ray and DVD on June 18th!

I’m a big fan of the X-Men and I enjoyed what Bryan Singer did to craft their world on film in X-Men and X2: X-Men United. Sadly, after he left the series things quickly went downhill with Brett Ratner’s horrible follow up X-Men: The Last Stand, which not only killed off key players, but depowered others and the ones that were left were written so out of character that they might as well have been killed also. To make matters worse, Fox then brought us X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Not only the worst movie of the series, but one of the worse comic movies of all time. The only saving grace was that Hugh Jackman really is awesome in the role, and even in a awful movie he is still good. The movie didn’t even try to fit into continuity, and I don’t even want to get started about the ending and how they made Logan lose his memory. But finally there is a glimmer of hope…

Bryan Singer has returned to help guide the franchise as they pull back to the origin or Professor X and Magneto with X-Men: First Class, with Matthew Vaughn directing. The movie isn’t based on any storyline in particular from the comic’s long history, but is pulling in a bunch of characters we have yet to see including Sebastian Shaw, Havok, and my favorite character in recent years, Darwin. We’ll also finally be seeing the Hellfire Club, and will have a proper introduction to Emma Frost, perfectly cast with January Jones of Mad Men fame.

Now comes word that Singer and Vaughn are eager to keep making films in the X-Men universe and want to show mutants through time, working through the end of the 60s, the 70s and the 80s. That could be interesting, but I’m more keen on Singer returning to the present day X-Men and fixing what Ratner broke. Thankfully producer Lauren Shuler-Donner agrees with me and told Empire Magazine that she plans to produce X4 and X5, which follow Last Stand. Death is never final in the X-Men universe, so there are lots of ways to negate the wrongs of the third X-Men movie and get the series back on track. There is no lack of talent with the actors and now we have real talent behind the camera again, so I have faith that we might see the X films that we deserve. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Bryan Singer X-Men First Class

I was gladly announcing that Bryan Singer had kissed and made up with Fox and would be returning to direct the newest X-Men flick (X-Men: First Class). Over the past two weeks, I have kept tight lipped with all of the news regarding the project. First Singer had to give up directing due to a commitment to a Warner Brothers film, then the rumors were flying that Singer would still produce with Matthew Vaughn directing. I didn’t want to get excited about the idea (hey, I was just burned by Singer being pulled off the project).

Now, Hollywood Reporter is saying that Matthew Vaughn will indeed be directing X-Men: First Class with Bryan Singer producing the film, which is expected to relaunch the X-Men franchise and get the bad taste of X3 and Wolverine out of our systems. I loved Stardust and very much enjoyed Vaughn’s latest effort, Kick-Ass (see the Mini Movie Review sidebar for more of my thoughts). I can’t put into words how excited I now am for this project. Lets just hope that Fox buds out and lets Singer and Vaughn go wild and make a truly memorable X-Men film.

The film will hit theaters two weeks before Green Lantern on June 3rd, 2011.

Tom Cruise in Bryan Singer's Valkyrie

A new trailer for Bryan Singer’s “Valkyrie” has been released. The film stars Tom Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, a real life German hero who plotted an assignation attempt against Hitler. The film’s production was plagued with problems, including controversy in German over Cruise’s casting (they weren’t a fan of a Scientology portraying a German hero), background workers getting injured on set, an endless shifting of release dates, and reshoots needed to rework the film.

Well, it would appear that things are finally coming together for the film. Read on to watch the new trailer for “Valkyrie”.
