The Pit

The 2017 International Comic-Con in San Diego is in full swing, so what would be a better time to bring back The Pit?

Stargate PrequelStargate began on the big screen before moving to the small screen and spinning off into a number of different shows, and now is being revived as a digital series. Stargate Origins will consist of 10 episodes that are approximately 10 minutes long each and will follow the early adventures of Catherine Langford. The character was in the original movie and made scattered appearances in Stargate SG-1. The new series will be streamed on Stargate Command, a new subscription platform from MGM, and could be the first of many new adventures in the Stargate universe (hey, maybe they can eventually resolve the cliffhanger from Stargate Universes). Check out the teaser here.
The Walking Dead Comic-Con TeaserThe Walking Dead was back in Hall H at Comic-Con with a panel and new trailer for season eight. Go right ahead and watch the trailer for “All out War” (ripped form the pages of the comic) then come back and finish this article! Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead creator and producer, commented that the season will be “very action-packed and very fast-paced,” which would be a bit different than past seasons. Dead is known to draw out events and arcs from comic, so it will be nice to contain the war to season 8 (and the final shot in the trailer hints at this big time!).

Defenders Comic-Con ImageAugust 18. We are one month away from Marvel and Netflix’s Defenders. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist teaming up to save New York. First of course there is a new trailer. We get a great look at Sigourney Weaver’s villain along with our best look of the return of Elektra. The action and interactions between the four heroes is spot on and the series looks like it will be the perfect climax for the various Marvel/Netflix shows. Also discussed at the panel was the upcoming The Punisher series, which is spinning off from Daredevil’s second season and starring Jon Bernthal as the title character.

Have you been following this year’s Comic-Con? What have been the standouts for you?

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman Revealed
Sure, Warner Brothers and DC Entertainment released some Dark Knight Returns inspired footage for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, but that was slightly overshadowed by the reveal of the movie’s Wonder Woman. Until now it was unknown if Gal Gadot would even don a costume, but here she is in a darkened version of her classic suit. The amazon warrior looks very similar to another warrior princess, but personally I don’t have any issue with that. Hopefully the outfit will get some classic red and blue before the trinity of heroes team up in Justice League.

Josh Brolin as Thanos

Josh Brolin is Thanos
The Marvel Studios panel had almost everyone from Avengers: Age of Ultron in attendance, including Robert Downey, Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Cobie Smulders, Samuel L Jackson, and James Spader, but joining the panel was someone unexpected; Josh Brolin who will be stepping into the boots of Marvel’s cosmic big bad Thanos. He jumped on the stage wearing the Infinity Gauntlet, ate a rose that Robert Downey Jr gave him, and showed that he will be a force to be reckoned with… eventually.

Ash in an Evil Dead Series

Evil Dead: The Series
Talk about unexpected. There was nt an Evil Dead screening or anniversary panel or anything like that. Instead, during the Screen Gems panel Sam Raimi, there to talk about The Last of Us, dropped a bomb on the audience; he is developing Evil Dead as a TV series with Bruce “Ash” Campbell and Ivan Raimi. Campbell followed up the announcement with the reveal that if it happens, he will star in the series. The team is no stranger to TV, having worked on shows such as Jack of All Trades and Xena: Warrior Princess together, and each having a hand in many other shows. God, I hope this happens.

The Walking Dead Trailer

The Walking Dead Season 5 Trailer
Not many TV shows get presented in Hall H, but The Walking Dead is a show that has earned its place in the large ballroom. AMC aimed to please the crowd and showed a lengthy (and spoiler filled) trailer for the new season. There is so much packed into this trailer (you can watch it here); what secrets do Terminus hold? How will our survivors get out? What new characters were revealed? Where is Beth? I’m not posting the spoilers here, but the release of this trailer alone makes the San Diego Comic Con worth it.

What piece of news from the 2014 San Diego Comic Con excites you the most? Which of these 4 awesome things is your favorite?

The Pit

The San Diego Comic Con has begun and with it we are being flooded with awesome geek news- from both the actual con and the lead up to it. Lets start with one of the biggest comic book movies that is currently in production…

Bishop - X-Men Days of Future PastBishop (Omar Sy- pictured to the left in costume) has been confirmed to appear in X-Men: Days of Future Past! The time traveling mutant has been rumored to be part of the cast, but we did not get confirmation until this past week. With Day of Future Past‘s story involving time travel, he was a good candidate for a role, especially when you consider the other notable time traveling mutant and fan favorite Cable, has had his parents killed off before he could be born (Scott Summers is his father and a clone of Jean Grey is his mother- but the real Jean Grey raised him in the future in someone else’s body… yeah, we don’t have to get into the specifics. Maybe it is a good thing that Bryan Singer choose Bishop instead of Cable). I just hope Bishop’s role is not a cameo.

Maria Hill

Lets stay on topic with some more Marvel Comics adaptation news. (SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!) Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD just keeps sounding better and better. First they got Joss Whedon on board to write and direct it. They put together an awesome writing/producing team of  Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon (Dollhouse, Dr. Horrible). Brought Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson back to life after his tragic Avengers death. Put together a damn good cast with Ming-Na Wen, J. August Richards, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet, and Elizabeth Henstridge. And now from the floor of the San Diego Comic Con and the show’s first public screening we have confirmation of the return of Agent Maria Hill (played by the wonderful Cobie Smulders). I am so excited for this show (premieres on September 24th). I just can not wait for the further adventures of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division.

The Walking Dead - Carl

The Walking Dead premiered a first look trailer for season 4 and my jaw is still on the floor. The footage might be spoiler-y or it could just be misleading. We’ll have to wait for the show to return on October 13th to really find out. You can watch it here. The trailer gives us a first look at Lawrence Gilliard Jr as a very (and I mean very) different Bob Stookey than the one we met in the comics, along with Tyreese in a scene that looks like it is ripped from the comics but in a different location, Michonne on a horse, Rick and Tyreese ready to trade blows, and a bunch of new faces (both alive and getting eaten). We can’t be sure if this was footage from the first episode back or the first few episodes, but it looks like when The Walking Dead returns, it will waste no time in jumping back into the action and racing forward. For better or worse, there was no sign of the Governor in the trailer… We’ll have to wait and see what he might be planning.

Keep checking back as we try to round of the most exciting news coming out of San Diego and we’ll be giving away another DVD this week. What movie? You’ll have to keep checking back to see!

the pit 2 logo

Another week and a lot is going on in the world of Entertainment! Lets take a look at what has fallen into the Pit this week.

  • Our friends over at 141tv have posted the demo/pilot for one of my all time favorite cartoons, The Flintstones. It is really cool to see something like this uncovered. You get a short scene that showcases how they were trying to make a “modern stone-age family”. The animation is rough and the character designs are slightly different than the finalized ones. Definitely worth a viewing!
  • The upcoming Superman reboot has a director, and he is very familiar with adapting comics and graph novels, 300 and Watchmen‘s Zack Snyder. With a strong script from Nolan and Goyer, I think that Snyder could do something really amazing with Superman. He is one of the best visual directors out there and this could be one of the best looking superhero movies to date. Hopefully Nolan ties this into his new Batman film with at least a reference or nod to a shared universe.
  • There is a trailer out for an all new X-Men video game, X-Men: Destiny. Click here to check it out. The story for the game was written by comic writer Mike Carey, where gamers take on the role of new mutant recruits to the X-Men and the decisions you make in the game change the outcome and how the story unfolds. It is expected to be released in the fall of 2011. We have some time.
  • There is an all new Chuck on tonight! You are watching the best show on TV, right?
  • Lots of comic book news has been coming from the NY Comic Con, including the fact that next year Dark Horse will be launching Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 along with a new Angel ongoing and spin offs for both Spike and Willow. There is also talk about Buffy meeting the extended Angel cast, including Connor. Hopefully we can get some Connor/Dawn interactions, I think most fans have wanted that from the day both characters were introduced.  Personally, I can’t wait for all the characters of the Buffy universe to interact and crossover. And I’m crossing my fingers that Oz rejoins the gang full time. He has been missed and there is no reason for him not to be in the mix anymore. Exciting stuff is ahead for Buffy fans. 🙂

The folks at NBC were kind enough to put the Chuck panel up online. This is the whole panel minus any clips they showed (with a few annoying but understandable commercials mixed in). Enjoy it… (expect spoilers)

(Now, I’m going to talk about spoilers) I love the idea of the CIA taking over the Buy More and adding other agents into the mix. It should be funny to see how Jeffster, Big Mike, and the others react to this. Linda Hamilton as Chuck’s mom is completely basass, I just hope she is good and not evil. I hope we can see some of what happened to Chuck’s parents in the past.

Other casting news; Olivia Munn and the “Old Spice” guy Isaiah Mustafa will be guest starring as CIA agents, and villains Stone Cold Steve Austin and Nicole Richie will be returning. With Richie returning, hopefully that means we’ll learn more about Sarah’s mysterious past. I also love the addition of Mekenna Melvin as Casey’s daughter Alex. I really hope that we’ll see more of her in the upcoming season.

Are you excited about the new season of Chuck? Discuss it below! NBC’s Comic Con panels for The Event, The Cape, and Community are also online, you can check them out here.

DC Comics and the makers of Mortal Kombat are teaming up for one of the strangest video game crossovers ever, pitting characters from both universes against each other in a fighting game. At the San Diego Comic-Con, the makers of the game brought some footage and described various features and characters within the game. Well, they have been kind enough to share that footage online…
