The Pit

The 2017 International Comic-Con in San Diego is in full swing, so what would be a better time to bring back The Pit?

Stargate PrequelStargate began on the big screen before moving to the small screen and spinning off into a number of different shows, and now is being revived as a digital series. Stargate Origins will consist of 10 episodes that are approximately 10 minutes long each and will follow the early adventures of Catherine Langford. The character was in the original movie and made scattered appearances in Stargate SG-1. The new series will be streamed on Stargate Command, a new subscription platform from MGM, and could be the first of many new adventures in the Stargate universe (hey, maybe they can eventually resolve the cliffhanger from Stargate Universes). Check out the teaser here.
The Walking Dead Comic-Con TeaserThe Walking Dead was back in Hall H at Comic-Con with a panel and new trailer for season eight. Go right ahead and watch the trailer for “All out War” (ripped form the pages of the comic) then come back and finish this article! Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead creator and producer, commented that the season will be “very action-packed and very fast-paced,” which would be a bit different than past seasons. Dead is known to draw out events and arcs from comic, so it will be nice to contain the war to season 8 (and the final shot in the trailer hints at this big time!).

Defenders Comic-Con ImageAugust 18. We are one month away from Marvel and Netflix’s Defenders. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist teaming up to save New York. First of course there is a new trailer. We get a great look at Sigourney Weaver’s villain along with our best look of the return of Elektra. The action and interactions between the four heroes is spot on and the series looks like it will be the perfect climax for the various Marvel/Netflix shows. Also discussed at the panel was the upcoming The Punisher series, which is spinning off from Daredevil’s second season and starring Jon Bernthal as the title character.

Have you been following this year’s Comic-Con? What have been the standouts for you?

In space no one can hear you… punish? Um… seriously? A limited series with the Punisher heading into space to hunt done an intergalactic mafia? If there is one Marvel character that does not fit in cosmic stories, that would be Frank Castle, the Punisher. I don’t see how this story will work, but it is a crazy enough idea to at least give it a chance.

SPACE: PUNISHER #1

Next Wednesday, March 9th, is the conclusion to the current “Bullseye” storyline running through PunisherMax. Two of the most badass characters in the Marvel Comics Universe, The Punisher and Bullseye are going head to head and throwing everything in their arsenals at each other. I don’t know about you, but I want to be there to witness this.

“Bullseye” conclusion. The final epic confrontation between Frank Castle and Bullseye, as the maniac assassin hits Punisher with everything in his arsenal, including a dark secret that cuts Frank to his core. Even if Frank survives, he will never again be the same.

PunisherMax #11 was written by Jason Aaron with art by Steve Dillon. Also hitting stands next week from Marvel Comics is Sigil #1, Venom #1, X-Men Legacy #246, and Onslaught Unleashed #2, among other titles.

Stallone as The Punisher

AICN has been doing another round of fan Q&As with action movie legend Sylvester Stallone in anticipation for his upcoming flick The Expendables (which hits theaters of August 13th, 2010). These Q&As are awesome, with Stallone sharing stories about past films and dropping a lot of behind the scenes nuggets along the way. One of the questions Sly got was as follows…

“Have you ever been approached about playing the Punisher and do you have any thoughts about/interest in the character? None of the filmatizations have quite hit the spot and I always thought you were the obvious choice. Especially now you are the only actor I can imagine capable of pulling off an undiluted portrayal of Frank Castle with his Vietnam war origin intact. My imaginary dream project would be a run of HBO miniseries’ adapting Garth Ennis’ defining run on Punisher MAX mixing real-life horrors with bloody vigilante justice. You are probably not familiar with it, but with Rambo fresh in mind the material and sensibilities should be right up your alley.”

To which, he replied…

“I’m very interested in THE PUNISHER on several levels and think the story should be resuscitated with or without me. Its just always been mounted improperly.”

If I was Marvel Studios, I’d be on the phone with Stallone’s people right now.  Who could better step into the shoes of Marvel’s ultimate vigilante then one of the biggest action movie stars of all time? Not only does Sly look the part, but he could direct the thing better than anyone Marvel has gotten in the past.  Bring the gore of the latest Rambo, with the broken ex-boxer of Rocky Balboa and you have Frank Castle. A man with nothing, fighting for vengeance and to make sure no one loses what he has already lost. At Comic-con, Marvel Studios revealed that they have gotten the rights for The Punisher back and that they would like to make a movie that does his justice, well Marvel, now is your chance!

Franken-Castle issue 19

Okay, I’ll admit it, I’ve been a bit out of the loop with comics lately. How in the world did I miss Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, get slaughtered and revived as a frankenstein-like monster?  I missed there first fight, but this week Franken-Castle gets a rematch with the man that killed him, Wolverine’s son Daken.  Fraken-Castle #19 brings us part two of “Punishment”, which crosses over with Dark Wolverine.

Written by Rick Remender with pencils/ink by Tony Moore. Here is how Marvel Comics describes the new issue:

“The rematch you begged for: Punisher vs Daken! A few months ago, Wolverine’s son hunted down Frank Castle at the behest of a vengeance-seeking Norman Osborn and sliced him to ribbons. But Frank’s feeling better now, and he’s ready for round two – as Franken-Castle! Everything you ever wanted all in one comic – in the most brutal, down-in-the-dirt, blood-soaked, slugfest the law will allow per page — guaranteed to kick you right in your damned face, in mighty Marvel fashion, naturally.”

The issue hits stands earlier today!

Punisher Noir

Marvel Comics have been releasing a noir line of their characters for a while now, but none of them have caught my attention.  Until now. What Marvel character is better suited for a gritty noir tale than the Punisher? None.  The new limited series takes place in the 1920s where a mob boss has finally met his match in the form of a skull faced vigilante. Who is under the mask? A cop? An ex-con? Another mobster? A normal person who has had enough with the rising crime in the city? You’ll have to read to find out.

The issue came out on Wednesday, it was written by Frank Tieri with art by Paul Azaceta.
