This past week at the San Diego Comic Con, fans of Twilight got a treat with a panel that featured author Stephenie Meyer, and cast members including Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Nikki Reed, Kellan Lutz, Ashley Green, Jackson Rathbone, and new to the cast Mackenzie Foy. During the panel they introduced footage from “Breaking Dawn Part 2”. Included in the footage was Bella (Stewart) dealing with being a vampire and the bloodlust that comes with it. She also hunts down a mountain lion.

Personally, I’m not a fan of the Twilight series and while it has had a positive effect of bringing vampires back in the spotlight, these are not vampires in any classic sense of the word. They go out in sunlight (and sparkle), have reflections, and none of the classic weaknesses (ugh). Pardon the pun, but the vampires of Twilight are completely toothless.

Thankfully we do have reasons to care about vampires again! With Twilight going away, the doors will be open for some good vampire movies and fiction to return.

It’s funny how easily it is to forget that Shia LaBeouf is actually a good actor. The three unwatchable Michael Bay Transformers made him into a laughable caricature of himself, but this is the same kid who starred in A Guide to Recognizing Your SaintsDisturbia, and Holes. He has talent, he just isn’t able to show it that much. Hopefully Lawless changes that trend.

In the movie, based on the book The Wettest County in the World, LaBeouf co-stars with Tom Hardy as the Bondurant Brothers. The brothers are two bootleggers in Prohibition-era Virginia who are threatened by authorities who want in on their profits. The movie’s awesome cast includes Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, and Guy Pearce.

In addition to Lawless, Shia LaBeouf also has an illustrated book of poetry called Let’s Fucking Party. With no more Transformers in his future, let’s hope Shia is able to rebuild his credibility.

It is a new week, and there is a lot going on.

  • Warner Brothers Animation has announced a new Green Lantern series that will be fully computer-generated. It is set to follow Hal Jordan, Kilowog, and an unspecific Red Lantern.  This is the first fully computer generated series with DC Comics superheroes.  There is rumored to be a Batman CG series that will follow this one also.  I’m not sure how I feel about this. I love classic animation and DC/WB put on some great superhero shows. I guess I’ll give the new style shows a chance, but if it isn’t broken, I don’t see why they are trying to “fix” it.
  • I have to do a shout out for myself, please head over to YouTube and watch The Paw! It is a little modern noir. You can also watch it on our side bar, thanks!
  • Scott Pilgrim vs the World has a new i-trailer! This movie looks awesome, and I can’t wait to see it.
  • The Twilight Saga took home 12 award wins at the Teen Choice Awards, proving once again that teens are stupid.
  • This is shaping up to be a really awesome weekend at the movies. In addition to the above mentioned Scott Pilgrim, we also have Stallone’s action flick The ExpendablesExpendables features the biggest cast of ass kickers ever assembled. I can’t wait to sit down and finish off two large popcorn buckets while it’s on.

The Pit v3 Logo

Hey everyone, welcome to a new edition of The Pit. What is happening in the world of entertainment?

  • Our friends over at 141tv have released a promo video for an upcoming interactive webseries, Ask Joe Guido.  You can check it out here. “Hey… How you doin’?”
  • Scream 4 has started shooting!!! It is really happening, they can’t stop now! Soooo excited. Nancy O’Dell has posted the first picture of Sidney (11 years later) on her twitter. That is not where I thought we’d get our first image from the new flick.
  • Hollywood the Game has entered the final week of it’s simulated Cable TV Session. Check out all of the virtual shows across the three networks. You can read and review them for virtual money!
  • Judd Apatow is teaming up with Pee-Wee Herman for a new movie adventure? That is all sorts of awesome and surprising.
  • The newest Twilight flick Eclipse has broken records with a take of $30 million from midnight showings. I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I has a trailer! Excited? How does it look? Leave a comment and let us know!

I’m sure that Marvel Comics is going to release a ton of these types of teaser posters for the upcoming X-Men #1 and the universe wide vampire crossover, but this one is really cool. I love the noir yet romantic style of it, and Emma Frost works perfectly as a vampire.

X-Men, Poster

When I first read the preview for X-Men #1 I was annoyed. It reads: “MUTANTS VERSUS VAMPIRES PART 1 – When a suicide bomber strikes in downtown San Francisco, it gets the immediate attention of the X-Men. But this is not your garden variety terrorist – and he’s not acting alone. Vampires from around the globe are descending en masse on the City by the Bay, staking a brutal claim for the patch of land the X-Men call their home. What is their agenda? Who is their mysterious leader? The X-Men are about to find out, as they brace themselves for a war of the species that will wrack the Marvel Universe.”

If there is only thing that superheroes (and the X-Men) don’t mix well with, it is vampires. And now, we have the beginning of a large vampire crossover likely inspired by the success of Twilight and True Blood, which makes it even more disturbing.  If you want to do vampires right, you have to make them a threat. You can’t have people turned into vampires and than cured, you have to make turning them count. You’ll have to up their power level to even be able to stand toe to toe with people like Wolverine and Colossus.  In a world where mutants can go out in the day and destroy cities in the blink of an eye, how are vampires scary?

“Second Coming” has gone a long way to make the X-Men enjoyable again. I just really hope that it isn’t wasted by pitting mutants vs vampires.

I’m not a fan of the Twilight series, but boy are they putting these out fast.  Can’t we get Terminator or Die Hard movies out like this? A series I’d actually want to see every year…

The Mid-Week Pit, Wolverine, Star Wars, Lost, Harry Potter, Action Movies

There is so much stuff going on that I didn’t want to wait for the weekend. Introducing The (Mid-Week) Pit!

  • Variety reports that Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, is set to star in Avon Man for Fox.  In the comedy from Hitch writer Kevin Bisch, Jackman portrays a car salesman that is laid off and reluctantly becomes an Avon salesman to provide for his family. Using his charm he becomes a top seller… ah, I’m not sure about this one Wolverine.
  • Renee Zellweger will return as Bridget Jones in a third film in the series, which is based on the 2005 newspaper column by Helen Fielding. In the new installment, Bridget is in her 40s and is desperatly trying to have a baby before it is too late.
  • TBS has greenlighted a new series based on the Ice Cube comedy Are We There Yet? The new series sees Terry Crewstake over the role originated by Cube, who will guest star in the series as an all new character.  Are We There Yet? joins Meet the Browns on TBS, another film turned TV series.
  • Staying on the subject of TV, FX Network has given the thumbs up for a pilot for The League, a semi-scripted comedy set around a fantasy football league.  There is a cool webseries with a similar premise (fantasy baseball) that has been going for a couple months, Fantasy Life.
  • More poisoning of the vampire genre, a Twilight graphic novel. Ugh.
  • Bobby Miller from The Best Short Films in the World has an all new webseries, The Reel Good Show. Miller hosts the online talk show. Their first guest, Obama Girl. Check out the pilot here.

Here it is, the new movie poster for the Twilight sequel New Moon

Twilight Sequel New Moon Movie Poster

Okay, we’re back in the smoky woods, there is nothing wrong there. We have the main cast, check, a cool logo, double check… Ah, guys? I didn’t know that the plot of New Moon involved Edward and Bella fighting each other for Jacob’s love. But there we have it, Jacob in the middle of them, turning away from the woman of his dreams and looking like it is taking everything in him not to profess his love to the vampire with a soul who sparkles. Meanwhile, said vampire is glaring at Bella and were his arms always that disproportionate? I mean his right arm is either freakishly long or the left one is a bit too slumpy.

What do you think about the poster? Am I being too mean here?
