Between DC Comic’s “New 52” and Marvel NOW! it is easy to get lost in the ocean of titles starring the big guns; Batman (and his extended family), Wolverine (have they been cloning him again?), Ironman (at least he has different armor in each title), Captain America (now in multiple dimensions)… the list goes on. Marvel especially has put a big push on its better selling characters/titles. They have released five issues of All New X-Men in under two months which leaves fans with very little extra coin to check out smaller/new books. Two of my favorite ongoing titles in the past decade have started as small creator owned titles but are now very recognizable; Powers and The Walking Dead. I always like to keep an eye out for new books and characters that have potential, which leads me to The Black Beetle. The series is a pulp style comic from artist/storyteller Francesco Francavilla, who has worked with both Marvel and DC Comics.

Last year I missed The Black Beetle in the three part “Night Shift” that ran in Dark Horse Presents #11 through 13, but I’d love to go back and check it out. The ten page preview for The Black Beetle: No Way Out is very cool and stylistic, as a pulp comic it hits all of the right marks and stands out from the crowd. The mystery (see the description below) hooks me in and I’m looking forward to seeing how the four part story plays out.

Official Description: Black Beetle’s investigation of two local mob bosses is interrupted when a mysterious explosion murders them and a pub full of gangsters — taking out most of Colt City’s organized crime in one fell swoop. Who could pull off such a coup, and what danger might that murderous bomber do to Colt City and Black Beetle?

The Black Beetle: No Way Out #1 hits stands next Wednesday, January 16, 2013 from Dark Horse Comics. If you are burnt out from DC’s “New 52” and Marvel NOW!, then you might as well try something new.

Check out these great comics…
