The Bastard Executioner

I was scanning through the television listings and a name caught my eye. Kurt Sutter. The genius mind behind Sons of Anarchy returns to television with The Bastard Executioner for FX. The new series premieres tonight and is set in the middle ages, promising a bloody and intriguing hour every week. If it has half the brutality that Sons had, I think fans of Game of Thornes (such as myself) might enjoy the new show. Joining Sutter from Anarchy are Katey Sagal and Timothy V Murphy, and I’m sure that we’ll see many other regulars of his. Also in the new series are Lee Jones, True Blood‘s Stephen Moyer, and Flora Spencer-Longhurst.

Official Show Description: The Bastard Executioner is a blood-soaked, medieval epic that tells the story of Wilkin Brattle, a 14th century warrior, whose life is forever changed when a divine messenger beseeches him to lay down his sword and lead the life of another man: a journeyman executioner. Set in northern Wales during a time rife with rebellion and political upheaval, Wilkin must walk a tight rope between protecting his true identity while also serving a mysterious destiny.

Guided by Annora, a mystical healer whose seeming omniscience keeps Wilkin under her sway; manipulated by Milus Corbett, a devious Chamberlain with grand political aspirations; and driven by a deepening connection with the Baroness Lady Love, Wilkin struggles to navigate political, emotional and supernal pitfalls in his quest to understand his greater purpose.

The Bastard Executioner premieres tonight at 10pm on FX.

Z Nation - New Season

Z Nation, the action-horror series on the Syfy channel returns tonight with its all new season. The post-apocalyptic show focuses on humanity’s ongoing struggle against zombies infused with all of the action and camp that you’d expect from a Syfy series. The show is the polar opposite from The Walking Dead, and that is not a bad thing. There is plenty of room for all sorts of zombie shows. The new episode is on at 10pm.

Z Nation, “The Murphy”
Description: In the Season 2 premiere, moments have passed since Murphy triggered the launch of tactical nuclear weapons and it’s every man/woman for themselves as the group split up and try to outrun the impending blast. Meanwhile, Citizen Z finds himself battling thawed zombies and unable to communicate with the team, which leads him to make a desperate move that prompts the arrival of a mysterious and deadly bounty hunter.

Marvel's Agents of Shield

If you aren’t watching Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, then you really should be! Since last year’s (spoiler alert) fall of SHIELD in Captain America: Winter Soldier, the show has been firing on all cylinders both creatively- and literally (the story movement has been nonstop). The team’s recent addition of Mockingbird (Adrianne Palicki) has been fantastic as has the mystery of Director Coulson’s alien writings. Is it Kree? Could it tie into the Inhumans? Are we seeing seeds planted for Age of Ultron or Captain America: Civil War? As many great questions that you can ask, here is hoping some of them pan out!

Tonight’s all new episode airs at 9pm on ABC. Here is the official description from ABC:

Marvel’s Agents of Shield, “The Writing on the Wall”
The team discovers murder victims who have on their bodies the same alien glyphs on them that Coulson’s been etching, and all of Coulson’s secrets and lies come to a head.

2 Broke Girls

After a disappointing second season, 2 Broke Girls has rebounded a bit. The show has found a good groove with Kat Dennings’ Max going to culinary school and all of the new characters that have come with it. This is something she (and the show) should have done before her and Caroline (Beth Behrs) opened a Cupcake Shop (the second season raced too far ahead too quickly). The supporting cast including Matthew Moy as Han, Garrett Morris as Earl, and Jonathan Kite as Oleg, all click and own their characters. The diner scenes are still the funniest and most enjoyable part of the series.

Official Episode Description, “And the Icing on the Cake”: When Deke invites Max’s friends over to his dumpster house, Caroline learns a big secret about his background.

2 Broke Girls airs on CBS at 8:30 PM. Also on tonight…

Brooklyn 9 9

Sunday was a big night for the freshman sitcom when Andy Samberg walked away with the Best Comedy Actor award and the show walked away with Best Comedy Series at the Golden Globes. However, while there were some people who were shocked to see the show actually win anything, those who watch the show know that it’s well deserved. Brooklyn Nine-Nine, although not the best ratings performer, is definitely the best new comedy series on the air right now. With an ensemble that’s airtight and some of the best comedy writing anywhere right now, Brooklyn Nine-Nine deserves to be watched. Live. No DVR or pirating bullsh!t. It’s that good. So at 8:30 sit your butt in front of your TV and turn on FOX because Brooklyn Nine-Nine is the future of TV comedy and its future is bright.

How I Met Your Mother

Here we go. We are in the home stretch of How I Met Your Mother and one of the fun ongoing stories throughout the series, the “Slap Bet,” is coming to a close. This season and the shift in storytelling (the whole season takes place in one weekend) has been jarring and very hit and miss, but it is great to see years of stories come to a head and ultimately, a close. In two weeks we get the Mother’s side of the story in an episode titled “How Your Mother Met Me.” I. Can’t. Wait.

Official Description: “Slapsgiving 3: Slappointment in Slapmarra” In their ongoing slaphappy “Slap Bet,” Marshall plans to land one final smashing blow to soon-to-be-married Barney.

After How I Met Your Mother is a new episode of 2 Broke Girls. What else is on tonight?

Marvel Agents of Shield

Okay, we are five episodes into Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD and I have to say, I dig it. Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson genuinely looks like he is having a blast as he chews through the scenery. I love the nods to the movies and seeing both Maria Hill and Nick Fury earlier in the season was shocking (I figured we’d get one, both both? Awesome.). The show feels like it is firmly set in the Marvel movie universe and I love that we’re getting to see more of the said universe. What will happen when the new Thor movie is released? Will we see any of the supporting characters? How about the big guy himself?

My only complaint so far is that the rest of the team needs to be fleshed out a bit more. I want to know more about them. Fitz and Simmons are a lot of fun, Agent May has shown shades of her dark past, but why should we root for Agent Ward or Skye? Neither have drawn me in the way past Whedon leads have. They don’t have the Buffy and Angel chemistry, Captain Mal’s wit, or Echo’s mysterious past and circumstances. Than again, we have plenty of time to learn more about the team and I’ll be along for the ride.

Official Description, “Girl in the Flower Dress”: Coulson and the team travel to Asia to rescue a young man with an unusual and dangerous power. Meanwhile, Skye has a secret that jeopardizes her relationship with the team.
